I Know, Another Kickstarter Project, But...Tex Murphy

Who can complain about a brand-new FMV game?

Please don't tell my parents how many times I dialed a hot line for Tex Murphy hints.
Please don't tell my parents how many times I dialed a hot line for Tex Murphy hints.

Kickstarter is giving designers some ideas. Specifically, that idea appears to involve reviving game projects and concepts that fell to the wayside of gaming's past. The latest? Tex Murphy.

Sometime soon, it will stop being news that an ancient franchise is aiming for a comeback through Kickstarter, but some games just tug at your heart strings, and Tex Murphy does that for me.

Dubbed Project Fedora, the latest attempt to bring the FMV-laden Tex Murphy back comes via Big Finish Games, co-founded by Tex Murphy’s creative masters, Chris Jones and Aaron Conners.

The Kickstarter won’t begin until May 15, but following some Internet scuttlebutt, Big Finish Games has announced that it’s actually happening. The studio is looking for backer reward ideas, which you can submit through its website.

Big Finish Games claims plans were already in motion to bring Tex Murphy back, but Kickstarter prompted it to contemplate making something much bigger than had originally been scoped out.

“With the recent Kickstarter success stories for other Adventure Games--Double Fine Adventure & Wasteland 2--we saw an opportunity to create a game of a larger scale,” reads the announcement. “So, with that in mind, we hope to bring the next Tex Murphy game to an a much bigger, dare I say, epic level--more actors, locations, broader stories and yes, even meaningful, varied story paths.”

Look, as long as there’s a ton of FMV, I don't care what you do. Oh, but seriously, make it more like Under a Killing Moon than Overseer. See? They’ve already got me.

I think the FMV side is overstated a bit here ... Tex Murphy was great because the GAME was awesome. People saying "have fun with your FMV game" obviously don't know this series.

I'm going to ear-mark at least $500 for this.

Apparently someone started a Kickstarter campaign to buy Kickstarter for nineteen million dollars. For a contribution of $100, the guy promises to personally autograph your Kickstarter.

If this isn't fake I need a link, I need link right now.

This is super exciting to me. I was just a little kid when I first played Mean Streets and I couldn't really figure out how it worked, but that game shaped so much about my future tastes (both in video games and general fiction) that though I haven't finished it, I consider it one of the most important games I've ever played.

Super excited about this!

Part of me doesn't want to stay this out loud, but dude. Funcom? Longest Journey? That kickstarter needs to happen, because I don't think we're ever going to get a sequel to Dreamfall without it. C'mon Ragnar -- let's make an adventure game!

It saddens me to realize that I'd completely forgotten about the unfulfilled Longest Journey trilogy. It's been so LONG. The Longest Journey remains one of my all-time favorite adventure games. If Funcom could tie that up and Jane Jensen could make a 4th Gabriel Knight game I would never ask for anything more.

Is kickstarter the new indie bundles?

I prefer to think of them as pre-orders done right.

That's a good way of thinking of it. You could pre-order a game from a large retailer, which just lets them earn interest on your eager investment in something they didn't make, or you could pre-order a game directly from the people making it.

yeah! that, and it may be some game that would never get made otherwise because of the perceived risk. I don't see why it can't happily co-exist alongside all the other ways of getting a game funded and published.

I looooved Under a Killing Moon back in the day. Probably one of my favorite games of all time. I played the latter games when I was older and while less magical they hold up.

Looking forward to this.

Once all these developers start doing Kickstarters and going "Well, I'm gonna make as much as Double Fine!" and then none of them even make goal, there's gonna be a lot of tears when none of them start making goal.

The neat thing about all these kickstarters is even though I've never heard of this Tex Murphy and won't preorder, it really doesn't matter. Because chances are the franchise has enough of a fan following to produce a kickstarter game. You don't need to sell a million units to win, you just need 50,000 backers.

Although its going to be really funny if all these Kickstarter games wind up being terrible.

I get what you mean, but in this case it's different. The last Tex Murphy game ended with a cliffhanger because everybody thought a new game would be a sure thing, but then the whole FMV bubble popped, and they've been trying to find funding for years to conclude the story.

To be completely honest, when Kickstarter became a success I only thought about TWO games I would like to see made: a new Tex Murphy game and a sequel to Anachronox (another amazing game with a cliffhanger ending).

@Branthog: That has to be a troll kickstarter. It's like posts on tigsource where someone with no idea how games are made has "designed" the best ever mmo and wants people to make it for them for free. There's even terrible spelling mistakes on the $10,000 rewards!

Other than the risk of being bad, I wonder how big the risk is that their entire customer base is actually funding the project, and therefore gets a copy as a reward, and thus there is nobody interested in the franchise left to actually purchase the game post-release.

Why not? If there are enough people willing to buy it to fund its making, I see no reason not to oblige them if the developer is interested in doing it. That's the whole point here - that there is money to be made in catering to niches -- instead of focusing on the largest and widest possible demographic out there, like most publishers have to do.

I don't see any more rational behind it being "unsustainable" than I do behind "EA and Valve and Square and all these companies are making too many games; it's unsustainable". In fact, it's arguably more sustainable, because the expense involved when getting a publisher (simply making the money back and paying the employees and the electric bill isn't enough) makes it cheaper and for most of them (so far) the price of the game to the player (or backer) is about a quarter of what games are selling for these days. I would argue that lower production overhead plus lower price of game plus gauranteed minimum audience/purchases before you even start working on the game equals a much more sustainable flow than the traditional method.

The only thing that could damage it is if too many of the big projects don't pull through and deliver in the end (which is certainly always a risk).

Oh, what I meant was that I don't think enough consumers will stay interested in the idea. Everyone is really excited about it right now and a lot of games are being funded, but I think it might turn out to be more of a fad. Unsustainable was a bit of a poor choice of words. But who knows, maybe fan funding really is "the wave of the future."

I think it depends. Not everyone is going to back everything, but when someone comes along and offers to make a game you are excited about (from an old franchise left to die or something new from a smaller studio that you can't wait to see made), it won't matter.

As it is, plenty of games don't get funded. It'll be the same way, then. There will always be the ideas that strike people and the ones that sort of fall over and fade away.

Of course, this is all speculation until we start to see results in the next year or two, I guess. :)

Man do I have fond memories of Tex Murphy. I remember my sister bought The Pandora Directive and even though I was in elementary school and so much of it probably should have been over my head I some how got it. I got that this guy was a wise ass detective ( kind of reminded me of my hero Indiana Jones), I even got that a lot of it was tongue in cheek. The story and puzzles were complex, but I got those two. I remember then blowing through Under a Killing Moon (I guess we play games retroactively in my house) when that got brought home. This is the first Kickstarter that actually has me interested. I like Tim Schaefer and I played all those games too, but none of them really connected with me like Tex Murphy.

I dunno if they'll pull it off.
