Kaz Hirai Explains PSN's Phased Restoration, Even Hands Out Restoration Maps (Seriously!) [UPDATED]

Sony to update American map as PSN restoration rolls out to each state.

UPDATE 2: I've successfully logged back into PSN, upon resetting my password. Have you?

UPDATE: Sony's informative restoration map will also reflect Canada going back online, Sony tells me.

--

By the end of the night, important pieces of PlayStation Network should be back online in the United States. This coincides with a region-by-region rollout of select PSN services, with the entire network expected to be back online worldwide by the end of the month. PlayStation executive Kaz Hirai appeared in a video published on the PlayStation Blog just moments ago, where he detailed Sony's process.

"I'd like to send my sincere apologies for the inconvenience the service outage has caused you," said Hirai, with classy music playing in the background, "and want to thank you for all the patience that you've shown as we've worked through this restoration process. Since the attacks on our networks, we've been working around the clock to bring game and media services back online."

It's been three weeks since PSN went down, and it would be several days before Sony began detailing what happened and how 77 million PSN accounts were compromised in the process. Even developers have begun voicing their frustration, as a downed PSN impacted the ability to test multiplayer games.

As PSN begins coming back online in America specifically, Sony will be updating a map. It's a clever and informative idea. You'll want to keep an eye on this page on the PlayStation Blog as it updates. Several readers have asked if Canada will be represented on that map, and Sony is checking for me.

C'mon, California! You can do it!
C'mon, California! You can do it!

"We know you've invested in Sony and the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services and we will do everything we can to regain your trust and confidence," said Hirai. "We also know that actions speak louder than words."

Hirai outlined additions to PSN's internal security to protect against future attacks: advanced security technology, increased levels of encryption, additional firewalls and an early warning detection system.

"I wish I could tell you that technology's available to completely protect any company against cyber attack," he said, "but unfortunately, the threat of cyber crime and data theft will continue to plague networks, companies, government agencies and consumers around the world for some time to come."

Sony is offering identify theft services to customers in regions where it's available. Sony has admitted up to 10 million credit cards stored in PSN's database were potentially exposed to the hackers before PSN went down, but there has been no proof of widespread credit card fraud in the weeks since. The lack of information has inspired criticism, as has the nearly month of downtime. Hirai appears to be well aware.

"We know even the most loyal customers have been frustrated by this process and are anxious to use their Sony products and services again," he concluded. "I wish we could have restored the network services faster, but these attacks were serious and sophisticated and it simply took time to install and test the new security measures across our entire system. We felt that we owed it to you to fully verify the security of the networks before restoring our services."

All of these people claiming they are going to boycott Sony forever seem rather silly.

All that's left now is the dispensing of free stuff.  Oh, and as a person who hasn't really been following this , has there been a lot of brand loyalty BS going on? Crazy kids and their toys.

Can't get my PSP to sign in to PSN.  I'd never used any PSP online features before, so my only option is to create a new account and I keep getting errors whenever I try to do that.

Frustrating -- all I want to do is access my existing PSN account on my PSP and it just won't work because I've never set it up before.

I love how vague the new security measures are. I understand that they can't openly say what and how they have tweaked to make their services reliable again, but saying they have "more firewalls" and "advanced security techonology" is the same as saying nothing.

Nice, Steam unlocked all of the Portal 2 achievements I earned as trophies as soon as I linked accounts.

That's what I wanted to hear!  I've unlocked a few co-op trophies with my wife and was hoping they'd show up in my Steam Profile.  :)

D'aaaawww... He sounds like it's a fucking reward for their customers. Sony, you've been owned. Also, you have some very, very, VERY dissatisfied employees working at your company..  Tho I'm sure we'll hear all about it in the coming weeks.

No kidding, Mr. Goldblum. If I was to so paranoid as want to avoid anything that could be hacked, has been hacked, or the company didn't tell anyone the second they were hacked, I'd have to live in a cave somewhere. I say be angry at Sony's response and expect [much] better, but not at the fact that something like this happened.

Why do I feel the need to input 4 8 15 16 23 and 42 and push a button every 108 minute?

Ah, I see you've downloaded LOST@HOME... ;)

I want a cloth restoration map. Can ya swing that Kaz? I missed the stages, it's just all green now.
A couple of errors reaching the server, now the change password server is timing out (no surprise it's getting overloaded), so we'll see how things go later.

Pleased it's partly back up, It just happened that i had a few games to play that were SP( FF13, Yakazu 4) and the fact i also own a 360 and gaming PC that the effect on my gaming hobby was zero.

My CC info was expired as i had not recenetly updated it luckily as i was meaning to days before it went offline, mt email address is an old one i never use i also just before the attack i planned on trying to change it if possible so a few lucky breaks, my name address etc could easily be obtained, the postie could steal it thats not a problem.

I was impressed with how Kaz came across and with the message he delivered and the fact we are getting free stuff is great.

Pleased it's nearly over and done with, Hope it wont over shadow what Sony do at E3.
Would like to see the hackers arrested and mufty off to jail where the late teen geeks can become a big guy called tiny's bitch, his botnet wont help him there, They have to be crapping it as they know if they get caught they will go to jail they have to for the amount it has cost sony and 3rd partys, Major fraud stealing all those CC's, The smart thing for them to do now would be to stay offline and the computer for quite some time, move as quick as possible as far as possible and lay low for a while.

that's the "box of shame" ... he must stay in there for 8 days and there is a chum bucket under his desk that contains his only sustenance.
