Long Suspected Dragon Age 3 Now Has Subtitle

Sequel is built on DICE's Frostbite 2 engine, ensuring better-looking blood.

Dragon Age II was not received very well by fans, putting even more pressure on Dragon Age 3.
Dragon Age II was not received very well by fans, putting even more pressure on Dragon Age 3.

BioWare has been talking up a third Dragon Age game for a while now, but made everything official official today with the announcement of Dragon Age 3: Inquisition.

Scheduled for a late 2013 release and (!) built upon DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine, one detail we're currently missing is what platforms Dragon Age 3: Inquisition is in development for. PC is a given, but don’t be surprised if BioWare and Electronic Arts are being coy because some platforms aren’t announced yet.

Like last generation, it’s very likely we will have a whole slew of games that come out on the current, established platforms (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3), while also getting super sized on the newer ones. Still, that’s just speculation for right now, but given the release timing, it would make a lot of sense.

“We’ve been poring over player feedback from past games and connecting directly with our fans,” said BioWare Edmonton and Montreal general manager Aaryn Flynn in the release. “They haven’t held back, so we’re not either.”

Dragon Age 3: Inquisition has reportedly been in development for more than two years.

I'm actually pretty pumped for this. Despite it's many flaws, DA2 charmed me enough to go back and replay DA:O and I think they have incredibly strong fiction and a good world. I'm hoping DA3:I has a larger more diverse world than DA2, but keeps the art style.

Because of Isabela, i pushed on and completed the game. lol. Without her, I'm not sure if i could have completed the game. lol.

I do propose this game be abbreviated as "DAIIII".

DA2 had Acceptable story but crappy environmental graphics. My decisions seemed to have little impact on the overall ending; I was hoping for more revelations about the God Child (aka Morrigan's child) and its role in the future events. As mentioned by Bioware the third game will be about "Saving the World from itself" I am assuming that there will be a new character; who will either facilitate the growing hostilities or mitigate them.

I still get the feeling that DA3 Inquisition will set the stage for a new trilogy focused on a new Character (hoping God Baby); who will unite the people of different origins under a new rule (preferably his/her's). For instance, if MC is a mage he/she could become the Archaeon(ruling regent) of the Teventer Imperium. Or the MC could rule the Grey Wardens by becoming the First Warden; simillarly the MC could be leader of multiple factions and then give priority of one faction over others.

This... this explains so much...

Every time something reminds me of Monkey Island, I do a little mental dance where I try to remind myself how many games are in that series and which came out when, and I never feel like I quite got it right. I finally understand that I kept forgetting about the second game! Man... that's.. a weird sort of relief...

I don't... Why do the first and third games have subtitles but the second has just a number? Could they simply not think of anything to say about DA2, or is DA3 so shallow that they felt they needed to reintroduce a subtitle to make it seem flashier? I'm okay with the first product in a series having a subtitle and the rest having numbers. Previous experience with the Halo franchise has taught me that it makes it much easier to search the Internet for things solely relating to the first game. But past that, it's perfectly okay to just use numbers. Or subtitles. Or possibly both, for extreme clarity. It just seems odd to have a trilogy going where the middle part has no name of its own...

You know, Fellowship of the Ring, LotR 2 and Return of the King. That's catchy.

Considering the original game was simply called Dragon Age for a very long time makes that even worse. The Origin subtitle was slapped on pretty late and I assumed it was so inevitable sequels could also have subtitles, making it feel like one long running series, like Lord of the Rings. Just calling the sequel "Dragon Age 2" made no sense and it's pretty clear the team who made the original game had very little to do with the design process.

Spot on. It was originally called Dragon Age: Exodus and it seems like it was planned as more of a spin-off/expansion originally, which makes a lot of sense in hindsight. It should have never claimed to be a sequel.

DA2 would been better if it was just a spin-off, not a sequel to DA:O which it pales in comparison too. DA2 was alright, but at the end of the day kind of a mess compared to the first game which was a masterpiece. Hopefully they have their heads on straight with this one.

DA 1 is more of a complete copy of The Night's Watch and the Others from 'A Song of Ice and Fire.' (Or 'Game of Thrones' if you only know the HBO show.) You weren't 'the one,' so much as 'one of the few remaining' who could take out the Others. Sorry... the Darkspawn.

Good point.

As someone who enjoyed both DA:O and DAII, I am very much looking forward to this. I have faith it'll be a more complete game than DAII was, what with the longer development time, and the new engine they're building using Frostbite 2 as a basis should mean it's up to par in the graphics department. Granted, I think the art design helped DAII look better than it might have otherwise; DA:O on the other hand was many things, but a great looker wasn't one of them.

So long as BioWare finds the proper balance of the best aspects of both games, DAIII could easily be the best in the series.

Dragon Age 2 was of such low quality it was impossible for me to play. I'm still angry about Dragon Age 2! The graphics were some of the worst I've seen this gen. Cameo, a fucking 360 lauch title, looked better then DA 2!

Hopefully they keep the gameplay improvements from part 2, but bring back a more compelling world to explore with few recycled maps. They certainly had more time to work on this then they did part 2.

I can't wait. DA2 and ME3 were great games, despite what the sheeple might try to tell you.

As a stand alone game DA2 is fine but as a sequel to DAO then it doesn't have a leg to stand on. I've said t before and I'll say it again. Bioware kinda shot themselves in the foot when they decided to name it DA2 because then gamer's expectation were set pretty high considering how loved DAO is (to this day it remains Bioware's most successful game) so you can't really blame people for lashing out when they discovered they did not get the game they hoped for.

I also bet you that DA2 was not the initial name for the game but some egghead in PR thought to capitalize on the DAO name. Loved the story of Dragon Age Origins, did not like one little bit the gameplay. Prefered the gameplay of dragon age 2 over the story. So a happy blending of the two would be nice.

I enjoyed DA 2 more then DA 1 there I said it. Though that's not to say DA 2 didn't have flaws like to many of the same zone reuse but I preferred how it was streamlined in some regards. The scope of the first was much better and had far more variety but I enjoyed the combat much more in DA2. The art design of DA2 was also much better and more distinct. Hopefully they take what was great about both versions and find a medium between the two. Allowing those that want more customization and control and the option for others to stream line things they don't care about.

The premise sounds pretty promising actually. Orlais should be a good setting

A little odd to be on the Inquisitor side, especially given the connotations that has had in European history.

I'm cautiously optimistic.

Hopefully they can actually craft the "adult fantasy world" they pushed so had with the first two games, compared to heavier stuff like the Witcher the DA games always felt a bit childish and black and white. (not that the witcher is immune to "MAN THAT'S ONE FUCKED UP SCENARIO, HUH?" syndrome.)

After playing the Walking Dead games, I would love an RPG with a similar system of choices/morality, games seem to get stuck in this rut where either the choices are straight good/evil, or every choice is completely terrible. sometimes things ARE gonna work out ok, and sometimes they wont; more developers need to see that.

I skipped Origins and took a shot on 2. I enjoyed it, probably because I didn't have expectations going in. Lucky for me, I don't have super high expectations for 3, so I'm ready to jump in whenever they release it... Then I'll hate it because it's not like 2.

Dragon age 3, more like Dragon age Pee ammirite?! ...

In my opinion, Dragon Age 2 played better then Dragon Age Origins.  The writing was noticeably worse, especially when it came to the choices.  Also, the battles weren't meaningful, you just wiped out wave after wave after wave of people rather then running into memorable battles at any point.

Mass Effect 3 was fun, the ending was a mess, and their solution was sort of blind to the complaints.  I enjoyed the game, just the conclusion sucked the desire to play again out of me, which is sad.

In the end, it'll be a wait and see for Dragon age 3.

Dragon Age: Origins was faaaaantastic! Dragon Age II......well, I'm not finished with that quite yet, if that's any indication, but it's pretty good too. I'm hoping that Dragon Age III take on more of the elements of the original than its immediate fore bearer.

EDIT: I do really like the subtitle.

I loved DA2. Yeah, the lack of different environments wasn't great but I didn't feel like the mechanics were significantly watered-down from the original. I had a lot of fun with the gameplay and I thought Bioware crafted some great characters and did some really interesting things with narrative that you don't see in many other games. Kirkwall may be the only place you go in that game, but by the end of it, it's not the same city.

Kirkwall didn't change in a single noticeable way.

At all.

sometimes it was night, sometimes it was day.

alternate answer, by the end of the game 10 robbers came out to attack instead of 5 at the beginning.

I really dont get all the Bioware hate. I liked the ME series thought it was the best this generation of consoles and DA:O was perfect aside from them graphics it was perfect. Their only flaw is DA2(never played that star wars mmo) and even that game is not a total shit game; i mean compare that to duke nukam and it looks like a fucking masterpiece lmao.

ill give them the benefit of the doubt. obviously i'll want to see more of this, but it could be good. DA2 had alot of cool stuff in it, it was just rushed. ME3 was pretty amazing until the ending.

i mean, i dont think they'lll make the same mistakes, DA2 is infamous for its flaws, almost a joke in the gaming community, so i think they'll try alot harder this time around.
