Major Round of Layoffs Reportedly Hits Zynga [UPDATED]

Austin, Boston, and Chicago studios reportedly hit, with some closing outright.

UPDATE: An internal memo from Zynga CEO Mark Pincus has hit, wherein he describes the closure of the Boston studio and the layoffs in Austin. The memo also points to potential staff reductions via closure of the company's Japan and UK studios. A total of 5% of the company's workforce is expected to be laid off.

The memo in full can be found at the bottom of this story.

---

Zynga CEO Mark Pincus, presumably praying for his company's bad fortunes to end.
Zynga CEO Mark Pincus, presumably praying for his company's bad fortunes to end.

The only thing worse than layoffs, in my opinion, are layoffs scheduled in time with a major event--like, say, an Apple press conference--so as to deflect bad press. If the reports we're hearing are true, Zynga just pulled that particular sleazy move in a major way.

Though the casual games publisher has yet to comment publicly, independent reports are coming out of Zynga's Chicago, Austin, and Boston studios. Austin has reportedly suffered a 100+ staff reduction, while Chicago and Boston are allegedly being shuttered outright. We're still trying to get official word on the validity of those closures, though multiple knowledgeable sources have all but confirmed them.

Zynga Boston was responsible for the Facebook game Adventure World, while Austin had been working on The Ville and Zynga Bingo.

These layoffs would mark yet another bleak spot in what's been a pretty bleak year all around for Zynga. After going public early in the year, the company saw its stock drop from $12 in early April, all the way to $2.21 as of this writing. Additionally, lawsuits have been filed, accusing the company's upper management of insider trading.

We'll update this story when and if we get an official response from Zynga.

INTERNAL NOTE FROM ZYNGA CEO AND FOUNDER, MARK PINCUS

Team,

Earlier today we initiated a number of changes to streamline our operations, focus our resources on our most strategic opportunities, and invest in our future. We waited to share this news with all of you until we had first spoken with the groups impacted.

As part of these changes, we've had to make some tough decisions around products, teams and people. I want to fill you in on what's happened and address any concerns you may have.

Here are the most important details.

We are sunsetting 13 older games and we're also significantly reducing our investment in The Ville.

We are closing the Zynga Boston studio and proposing closures of the Zynga Japan and UK studios. Additionally, we are reducing staffing levels in our Austin studio. All of these represent terrific entrepreneurial teams, which make this decision so difficult.

In addition to these studios, we are also making a small number of partner team reductions.

In all, we will unfortunately be parting ways with approximately 5% of our full time workforce. We don't take these decisions lightly as we recognize the impact to our colleagues and friends who have been on this journey with us. We appreciate their amazing contributions and will miss them.

This is the most painful part of an overall cost reduction plan that also includes significant cuts in spending on data hosting, advertising and outside services, primarily contractors.

These reductions, along with our ongoing efforts to implement more stringent budget and resource allocation around new games and partner projects, will improve our profitability and allow us to reinvest in great games and our Zynga network on web and mobile.

Zynga made social gaming and play a worldwide phenomenon, and we remain the industry leader. Our success has come from our dedication to a simple and powerful proposition – that play is not just something people do to pass time, it's a core need for every person and culture.

We will all be discussing these difficult changes more with our teams and as a company. Tomorrow, Dave and I will be hosting a post-earnings webcast (details to follow) and next week we will be discussing our broader vision and strategy during our quarterly all-hands meeting. I'm confident this puts us on the right path to deliver on the promise of social gaming and make Zynga into an internet treasure.

If you have any immediate questions, I hope you will talk directly with your manager, Colleen, or me.

I look forward to talking with you tomorrow.

The best part is that the word "Zynga" on their resumes will forever be a black stain and hold back their entire careers.

They'd be better off saying they spent X number of years smoking crystal meth in a truck stop.

My God!

Just because you don't agree with some of their business practices does not give you the right to hope misfortune on the employees.

I know someone who is now jobless because of this news, and I can tell you that his team didn't sit around all day dreaming of ways to ruin the game industry. They (had) found a market and are focusing on keeping that segment of the population entertained and engaged.

To those who blindly hate Zynga and their user, please grow up....games are no longer just for basement dwelling adolescents.

My thoughts go out to those trying to find a job in Boston. Hopefully the recent flood of 38 Studio employees doesn't make it impossible to find a opening.

I harbor no ill-will against the employees in the trenches, but the people at the top making business decisions and (apparently) engaging in insider trading have a pretty big pile of bad karma stacked against them.

Casual gamers move from one thing to the next very quickly. They treat every game as a fad. There's definitely money to be made in the casual market - Angry Birds is testament to that. But Zynga was trying to treat the Casual Market as a Market of regular game players. Most people that played Farmville? They've stopped and moved on to something else.

Wow, I feel horrible for all the people who just lost their jobs, and the heads of Zynga are massive pricks for doing this at a time when the media will be distracted, hoping people wouldn't notice. I can't say I'm surprised, though; Zynga has been all about making shady business moves in every way they could to better serve themselves. It's only a matter of time before the entire company implodes and there's nothing left but a bunch of out-of-work people who deserved better.

Edit: a bunch of out-of-work people, most of whom, deserved better. The heads of Zynga can go suck on shit.

This. The people that are losing their jobs are not the ones that deserve to suffer here. It's unfortunate any time people lose their income. But yeah.. Zynga can go right to hell.

Zynga's failure is not because of the business they are in. If they had spent their time and money developing new and interesting properties that intrigue mobile phone owners, rather than chasing today's craze, they could have been the next Nintendo.

As for the people who are being laid off, I guarantee wherever they wind up will be much more creatively fulfilling.

I'm not a fan of Zynga at all, and you can be mad all you want that these people are losing their jobs, but Zynga actually created the jobs for these people in the first place. These people aren't losing their jobs just because of inept management, Zynga was a fad and like every fad it had to end and this is just the way things go.

You know, I think those companies looking into 'midcore' stuff are about to fuckin reap. Zynga introduced all these people to the concept of playing games as a true leisure activity, but they don't need to play the same style of game (as we in the hardcore often do). Now you have this huge group of people that already _have_ casual games, but might be interested in the next step.

Heh, yeah, I can see how that interview would go:

interviewer: "so tell me a little about your past professional experience"
applicant: "well I worked for 3 years in studio x doing level design and a little bit of gameplay programing as well and then I... ummm... spent 2 years smoking crystal meth..."
interviewer: "hah, no seriously, what have you done before?"
applicant: " *heavy sigh*.. I worked at zynga for 2 years"
interviewer: "*stares blankly at applicant*..AHEM...ok let's go back to the crystal meth thing"

The market is a weird thing. It seemed so obvious to so many of us that these social game companies were getting overvalued like fucking crazy.

It's been like the IT boom all over again, just on a smaller scale.

I hope everyone canned lands on their feet, layoffs suck. Still the faster people realize companies like this, and the "games" they make are fucking awful time and money vacuums, the better.

Also well... the whole damn company is a Facebook bottom-feeder anyway, I hope the whole social networking thing goes belly up. Um... something about more fish in the sea? Fish analogies.

Yeah that certainly seems to be the case. I don't hear games journalists (the GB guys included) raising a fuss over the trend besides saying that layoffs are a 'shame' and then changing the subject. Maybe they don't see value in commenting on the industry politics.

Either way, I don't like it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't GiantBomb created with the plan to have a gaming website completely detached from politics and business aspects and focus solely on games? (Directed at Darkstorn, but I'm actually trying to recall where I read that or if I just made it up in my mind)

That's what I'm confused about. I remember Jeff at one point mentioning that covering the industry was not interesting to him or the rest of the team (perhaps in one of the 'How to Build a Bomb' videos?). Jeff and Ryan wanted to build a community focused on games since the outset.

However, GiantBomb has been trending towards more industry coverage in the last 12 months, culminating with the hiring of Patrick. I like what Patrick has added to the site, and I feel like the GB guys are recognizing that and potentially moving in a direction that plays to Patrick's strengths. In other words, more industry coverage, more game development writing, and more editorials.

I wish there would stop being layoff news stories, its hardly news about gaming. They also happen so often that it seems at times that 25-50% of all news is this sort of stuff.

Does anyone really find this sort of news feed worthwhile or interesting? Does it match the tone or goal of news about games? If I was buying company stock it fits the tone, if I am buying games I don't think it does.

Moreover it is always in the style, which I find slightly aggravating, of a sad lament for the people laid off. Like sure that sucks if it was a friend of a friend or something but being sad for strangers is held to a higher bar isn't it? News that is sad about strangers is plentiful and normally is a hell of a lot more impactful then someone needs to find a new job.
