Portal Comes To 360 Next Week... Again

Still Alive to weigh in at $15 on October 22.

Certainly this computer is completely harmless.
Certainly this computer is completely harmless.
Microsoft has announced that Portal: Still Alive will be released on Xbox Live Arcade next week for a price of 1200 Microsoft Points, which rolls out to 15 bucks in real money.

For those of you who haven't been keeping up, this isn't a sequel to Portal. In fact, it's really just the original game with a handful of new challenge maps included. Many of those new maps appeared for free on the PC, though, so if you've been keeping up over there, all you really have to look forward to here is a set of new achievements.

The company's marketing blog also posted this audio file in order to get you stupid pumped for Portal.

Maybe it's too early (you know, noonish) for me to wrap my mind around this, but wouldn't a clip of GLaDOS beckoning you to return to the world of Portal only make sense if this was an actual sequel and not a barely upgraded re-release of the original game?

Oh well. It's probably been close to a year since I last played Portal. I'd play it again. But then, I already own it on both the 360 and the PC. Hmm... is there really anyone out there who hasn't played Portal who would be better off getting this instead of just going whole-hog and buying a copy of The Orange Box instead?

Why would 360 owners get this? Orange Box is much better value and one of the best game(s) this gen.

I bought Orange Box and played it so little outside of Portal. The rest of the package just didn't really withstand the test... of time? Something like that. Portal was great, though.

I've got the pc version, plus the free map pack from the flash game, so I don't see a reason to buy this one.

Well, considering that I was able to beat it in one sitting on my friend's Xbox once, and again when he let me borrow Orange Box, I don't know how much I need to play it again.

What about those users that bought The Orange Box for 360 and want the challenge levels?  We have to buy portal all over again?  That's kind of dumb.

I don't know.  I love, love, love Portal but I don't think a bunch of few maps and achievements are enough to bring me back for 15 dollars.  Maybe, i will think about it.

I'd love to play the new challenges, but really don't want to buy the whole game again to do so. It'd be nice if they would release the extra challenge rooms as DLC for The Orange Box, but I wont hold my breath.

People that own this already should be given the extra content!!!!  Even if I had to pay maybe say $5 for  the extra content It wouldn't be that bad, but to release the same game with a title change and expect me to shell out $15 is just wrong!!!!  Nope im not buying in with this cr@ppy deal.

So.. Will you have two sets of Portal achievements if you finish this AND finished Portal in the Orange Box way back? interesting.
I have played through the game three times since the release of the Orange Box and one time on the PC. Do I really want to go back to the same game again? This might sound ridiculous, but I want a continuation of the Portal STORY. What really happens after the end of Portal? I want to know!

Wait a minute, so this is just the challenge rooms that were included in the PC version of Orange Box??

Guess Ill go back to playing Portal: Prelude.  What a crock.  =(

EDIT: Just saw the description which says 14 maps.  Now I'm really confused.  Guess I'll wait for a review.

What a total rip-off. $15 for to buy Portal AGAIN and maps that PC users got for FREE?

Nothing to see here, kids. Just Microsoft continuing to do their part in ripping off their customers.

If anyone pays for this load of crap, you're nothing but a contribution to the problem.

I'll probably end up buying it, even though I own the Orange Box.  Who can pass up new Portal challenges?  Not I.  Not I, indeed.

Orange Box is $30 new and $27 on Gamestop.com.  All in all that seems like a better value, but only if you are going to play the games besides Portal.  I might get this since I haven't actually played Portal and don't really think I'd play the Half-Life 2 games...but I've heard a lot of good things about TF2, and that seems up my alley, so it'll take some pondering.

As good as Portal was, I would never have bought it if it didn't come in The Orange Box.  Being a solution based puzzler means there's little replay value, and it was extremely short to boot.  Perfect as an extra, but as a standalone game I would have been disappointed.

I already own it on PC, and played through the whole Orange Box on 360 but I'd buy it... for 800 points. 1200 is just too much even for such an awesome game like Portal.

$15 isn't asking much, but considering I haven't seen the game sell new for more that $30 here in Canada, you might as well get the full package.

So possibly the target audience for this is people who have NOT played Portal on any platform, and is NOT interested in the other games in Orange Box.  I think Portal by itself on Steam is $20, so I guess this is an ok deal...maybe?  It seems like a very small niche that would actually benefit and it seems like this announcement has disappointed way more people than it excited.

Actually, this is perfect for a guy like me (and Superchris129 it seems). I am not really that interested in Half Life, and I wouldn't have enough time to play those games anyway. (The little video game time I do have I'd rather spend playing other games.) However, I am really interested in Portal. So, I'd rather save $15 and get a few extra Portal maps than spend $30 for a few other games I won't play. I agree with Superchris129: this for me is "perfect".

As I have never played Portal, this might be another way to get me into it. But I need to find a way to hook up a keyboard and mouse to my XBox before getting an FPS-type game.

It seems that my guess on the target audience was right on the money.  (+1 for me)  But it also seems I underestimated the size of that niche, based on the number of comments here. (-1 for me)  Well cool, more gaming goodness all around, enjoy guys!

I'm glad it's released stand-alone on XBLA.

But, that's because my parents won't let me buy M rated games most of the time and I don't have enough money to buy the Full-fledged Orange Box.

So, it's great for me, but I don't think it's great for many other people....

you guys are kidding right.  Portal was the best part of the Orange Box, and this is more of the same, and this new is release gives you more great levels, and challenges.  How could you possibely go wrong this release is a blessing for any portal fan, not a silly rehashing of stuff released last year.

I might actually get it.  I played Half-Life 2 and didn't like it, Team Fortress 2 looks good, but I'm a single-player kind of guy so the Counter-Strike-esque gameplay doesn't really excite me.  Portal has always been the only thing in the Orange Box to seriously interest me, so maybe I'll try a demo and if I like it, I'll buy it.  Sounds good to me.
