Praise Be to Bethesda: Skyrim Will Use Steamworks

The next Elder Scrolls epic will deeply integrate with Steam.

If you close your eyes, you can pretend you're playing Skyrim right now. Don't open them.
If you close your eyes, you can pretend you're playing Skyrim right now. Don't open them.

There's much more to Steam than a digital distribution platform. Some developers chose to engage with Steam on a deeper level by incorporating Valve's Steamworks development platform, which allows for Steam to fully integrate with the game.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be the latest game to take advantage of Steamworks, Bethesda Game Studios revealed today over Twitter. And lo, there was much rejoicing amongst PC gamers.

There are several advantages to leveraging Steamworks, whether it's integrated voice communication and Steam Cloud support to accessing anti-cheating mechanisms and player authentication tools. That might sound like a bunch of gobbledygook if you've never played a game with Steamworks, but in short, it makes the user experience a hell of a lot better.

Now, if only I had a PC capable of running Skyrim. I should add that to my wedding registry...

In other news, I just clasped my hands together and made a girlish "Squee!" noise.

If there was one thing I hated about reinstalling Oblivion it was restarting and doing the opening level AGAIN.

I'll assume you've never played a PC game burdened with GFWL then? A PC game really does not need a crappy xbox style dashboard thing, especially one as buggy as this.

I hate having the game REQUIRE Steam the way New Vegas did, as it basically turns into an extended rental that can be pulled on an exec's whim.  On the other hand, Bethesda games are always garbage on console, especially when they first come out.

This will make it even easier for them to deliver that Horse Armour DLC! Just kidding though. I really love it when games use Steamworks, it's made my PC gaming experience way more enjoyable and you'd be surprised how awesome Steam cloud is when you find yourself using two computers.

I doubt we'll get a free PC copy, but it'd be hella sweet if we could get Steam Achievements and PSN Trophies at the same time.

Don't thinks this qualifies as news worthy? The people who use steam will figure it out for themselves.

Can't say I'm amazed. I'm a huge Steam-user, but I've grown to prefer Gog and Gamersgate's client-free model, especially if games sold on GG are DRM-free as well. I don't see why I should be excited over cloud saves when it means I'm forced to use Steam.

I originally didn't like digital downloads because it didn't feel like I owned my games (sites could potentially shut down at any time), but if I'm gonna jump on that train I'll prefer if my games don't need Steam/Origin/Nextbigthing to run.

I guess it just didn't bother me much in SF4 and the few other games I've played. Steam has plenty of jank too. I prefer to buy my downloaded games on Steam, but it doesn't bother me much if they use Steamworks or not. I doubt I'll care when I play through Skyrim on my own.

Great one more game that forces me to run a application in the background in order to play it. There is a reason why I don't buy games on steam but devs think it's fine to force us into using a 3rd party application.

Nah. It was 1.6 that absolutely needed it. 1.5 was the last of the good old WON days.

Edit: Hah looked it up apparently 1.5 is still available to download. I wonder how many people are still playing it. It's probably guaranteed that they're crazy too.

Hopefully that means Steam activation as well. I can usually get games a lil bit cheaper from retail. Also, hopin' this won't mean the end of mod support.

I think i'll wait for the GOTY edition to come out before I consider getting this on Steam. Bethesda have said their gonna do expansions this time round(instead of meaningless dlc packs ala F3 or Oblivion) & that means they'll be included..

..Plus I kinda want a physical copy of this, what with the map & all ;)

Well, that's fine, I guess. I don't have any problem with Steam, GFWL or DRM-less at all. If having Steam means Achievements and Cloud (because, you know, I like having my 200-hour character safe somewhere, in case my PC fails or anything), that's great.

You'll still be able to play it if you're offline and Steam really doesn't take up that much processing power in the background. I don't get what you mean about the game being "ours"?

It makes me happy to see other bigger name companies use Steamworks, its been mostly smaller names to this point with the exception of Square-Enix. Skyrim with Steamworks integration is something I can't live without now that I know it will be present. Being able to roll out patches quickly will be good, if you know how buggy Elder Scrolls can get, you know what I mean. Having those bugs patched out ASAP will be gdlk. Cloud saving will be amazing. Just in case my PC dies, I know I won't lose it all. Steam Achievements are welcome too. This game is gonna be sick.

I use steam exclusively when it comes to buying PC games. Not only because I'm a Valve fanboy, but because I feel like they deserve my money more than Microsoft/D2D/EA/etc... Valve actually utilizes the money they make to create a better PC gaming experience, and also work on games that have complete polish. They don't have any suits telling them when to finish a game and I'm happy for that. So there is no Half-Life 3 yet. I'm not worried, I know it will be good when it does come out.

I also don't understand people's fear of Steam running on their PC. It is hardly noticeable. It only gives you an in game web-browser, friend chat, tells you who else you know that is playing the game, news on the game you're playing, and an easy way to find out the time without forcing your computer out of the game and into the desktop (honestly, I shift+tab just to find out the time maybe 8 times a sessions). Steam, depending on the game, will also protect you from cheaters if VAC detects them. Seems like a no brainer why I would use it. I can't think of any reason not to use it. It's not like other things running in the background of your computer. Steam is there to manage your gaming environment and nothing more.
