Sierra's Coming Back With King's Quest, Geometry Wars

Activision's new label will focus on reviving old franchises, incubating new ideas.

The return of Sierra was teased last week, and Gamescom reports are filling in the details. We now know Sierra will be initially focusing on reviving both Geometry Wars and King's Quest.

No Caption Provided

The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom developer The Odd Gentlemen have been tasked with King's Quest, while Lucid Games, formed from the ashes of Bizarre Creations, is building Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions.

Geometry Wars creator Stephen Cakebread confirmed he's not involved with the new game, which is scheduled for "this holiday season."

The new Geometry Wars will have "full 3D action," cooperative and competitive multiplayer, and a 50-mission single-player campaign.

Here's what little we know about the new King's Quest, which is coming sometime next year.

"In the new story, King Graham--revered as the greatest adventurer to ever live--shares his life’s adventures with his curious granddaughter, Gwendolyn. It is through these tales that Gwendolyn discovers the true greatness of her grandfather."

"We're very proud of what we created all those years ago with Sierra Online, and today’s news about carrying Sierra forward as an indie-specific brand is very encouraging,” said Sierra founder Ken Williams in a press release. “We look forward to seeing Sierra’s independent spirit live on, and are especially excited to see what The Odd Gentlemen will do with King’s Quest.”

New Sierra's focus will be on digital distribution, and is already in talks with a number of other developers.

Now if only they were to announce a new quest for glory. With or without the Cole's behind it I'd find that pretty damn exciting.

I will never say no to a new Geometry Wars.

I mean, I wish the original creator was involved, obviously, but... I...

I just really want a new Geometry Wars.

I'd say that I would prefer to get a new Space Quest but that's coming...some day from that Kickstarter by the Guys From Andromeda. A new Police Quest would also be cool but I'm not sure how you'd do that today.

The King's Quest games don't really hold up outside of pure nostalgia (of which I have plenty), and I have no idea what would make a good, modern King's Quest, but hell, I'm excited.

Also, Geometry Wars: Galaxies was awesome, okay??

Not really sure how there can be a King's Quest game without Roberta Williams involved. I hope it ends up good, but that franchise really felt like it was her thing.

Sort of the same feeling with Geometry Wars too. No Stephen Cakebread makes it feel like a cash grab.

P.B. Winterbottom was fantastic. Don't know how their skills with a puzzle platformer will transfer to an old school adventure game format, but I have faith they'll pull it off.

But I wonder how many pies there will be in the game...

As far as I know, Ken hasn't been with Sierra in some time... from what I recall he was edging himself out even before they were originally acquired by Vivendi, or by somebody who was then acquired by Vivendi, or however thing went.

But like many of us (and more than most of us!) I'm sure he's happy to see his baby re-animated. Ok, that sentence really didn't come out right, but you get the point.

Because that's a fake twitter account. The real account doesn't have the underscore in the name.

@madnesshero88: I'm hoping that's why Rogue to Redemption has been slow to show progress. Maybe they're in talks! Wishful thinking probably.

I want to be skeptical about KQ but I love that developer choice. So I'm going to upgrade my mood to cautious optimism!

I like the idea of an indie-esque publishing label operating within Activision.

Ken was actually forced out, by bad businessmen who made some bad deals and got Sierra involved with a company that was involved in some financial fraud or something. That's why they ended up getting purchased by Viviendi, and subsequently gutted.

Anyway, this is good news. Sierra dominated my youth and childhood, and the prospect of a new Space Quest...

Yep, by far their most interesting Quest franchise. Totally unique blend of adventure game and RPG. I couldn't care less about King's/Space Quest and other than SWAT 2 and 4 the Police Quest games weren't great either. But hey, if you haven't heard of it yet, check out Quest for Infamy, it's exactly what it sounds like, a total Quest for Glory rip-off/tribute, horrible voice acting and all.

Activision started a new label using the old name. The old Sierra was closed down in 2008.

Kinda like when EA bought and shut down Origin, and then rebranded their digital store EA Downloader to Origin. But at least in this case, the new Sierra seems to do kinda what the old Sierra did. I just hope they'll get back to releasing Japanese indie games in the west under that name, like Sierra did in the late 80's.

Me too, that whole sierra adventure series taught me to type and spell.
