Konami shed a bit of light on the next Silent Hill this afternoon at its E3 media briefing, highlighting foremost that the game will stick to its horror roots and feature the same mesh of puzzle and fight-or-flight elements. Interestingly, the publisher noted that Silent Hill 8 will feature "unique evolutions" in the combat system, and will have adjustable side-missions based on play style.
What Silent Hill 8 would look like if I were the art director. The game, which is tentatively titled, is under development at Vatra Games and will launch on the Xbox 360 and PS3 at some point in 2011.
As for what kind of Silent Hill you'll be swinging your flashlight around in, it's being said that Silent Hill 8 will appeal to fans of the early titles. But instead of rolling with a classic character like Harry Mason again, you'll be thrust in the shoes of an inmate named Murphy Pendleton who finds himself unceremoniously in Silent Hill after his transport vehicle jumps off the road.

Awesome. Silent Hill on the Wii was a game I was pretty jealous I never got to play. I really liked the idea of them trying to creep me out based on my personality. It sounds like that is the direction this one is going, at least I hope it is; if so, can't wait.
Vatra is making this? As in the upcoming xbla/psn game Rush'N Attack: Ex-Patriot Vatra? I just hope they learned something from Shattered Memories. It would be a shame if they went and made another Homecoming.

If you read between the lines, both for what was in the trailer and what they said at the actual presser, then you might conclude that they recognize that Shattered Memories was better than Homecoming, and they want to move more in that direction.
I'll save my hopes until I see it. I haven't actually enjoyed a Silent Hill game since the third, which was the last good one in my opinion. They've really lost their touch in recent years.
Also, I'd kill for some Move support. The flashlight in Shattered Memories was good, but still prone to crazy Wii interference. Move could bring something to it. You could even have situations where you need to twist it to see into tight passages and so on.
It would be really nice if Konami would stop farming the series out to random third-party devs. Vatra Games hasn't even developed a game before, Double Helix mostly handled Earthworm Jim and movie licenses, and Climax has a resume full of disposable garbage. At this point, I'd rather see the first three games updated on PS3/360 and the series put on hold indefinitely.
@uzumaki: Exactly, but with Team Silent disbanded this trend is unfortunately just going to continue until one of them gets it right or finally nails the coffin shut.

You know, i would pay for a crudely drawn stick figure Silent Hill, provided they kept everything else about the game as dark and fucked up as possible. I want to see my stick-protagonist screaming and trying to gouge his eyes out with shards of glass.
@Meowayne:@Khessed: I barely considered Silent Hill 4 a real Silent Hill game! In my mind, they're making Silent Hill 5. It would be like GTA IV being called GTAVII because of some knockoff games like San Andreas.
Sounds a bit like Shattered Memories didn't do so well on the Wii, what with them moving to PS3 and 360. You'd think at this point it'd be a safe bet to do a Wii game since you can just port it over to PS3 and 360 anyway.
@AlwaysAngry: I just realised that Silent Hill 8 is just a working title (i'm slow i know :P). But in that case Meowayne is right and this is the 8th game that has the SH brand. The list is, of course, not chronologially correct.

The question is: Who cares if the name will have a number or not? The fact that the trailer focuses on mood and characteer, not resorting to combat or fanservice I take as good sign.
