Sony Reveals PlayStation 4 Pricing, Design

Want to pick up a PlayStation 4 this fall? You're gonna have to lay down some money to get one. But how much?

No Caption Provided

After today's relatively surprising reveal of the Xbox One's $499/€499 price point, the ball was in Sony's court to either match, exceed, or undercut Microsoft's pricing. The price of the PS4 was likely decided weeks ago, of course, but there was still plenty of anticipation before Sony's press conference as to precisely how much their new console would cost. Well, now we know: the Playstation 4 is going to run you $399/€399, or 349 pounds in the UK.

Maybe you didn't hear me: the PS4 is going to cost $399, a full $100 less than the Xbox One. And Sony's also promising to fully respect the rights of gamers to sell, trade, and lend games between themselves.

Alex will be back in a bit with a more thorough writeup of Sony's conference, but for right now, all we can say is that Sony has opened up on Microsoft with some serious firepower with their E3 showing. This is gonna be an interesting year!

I paid $420 Canadian Dollars in February 2001 for a PS2, so paying $400 Canadian Dollars in 2013 money for a PS4 seems good to me.

The amount of people that bought Sony's shit hook line and sinker tonight really amuses me. If you guys honestly believe that SONY doesn't have some sort of stupid nonsense to ruin all this positive buzz you guys are out of your fucking minds. I guess maybe I've been through this loop enough times to see it coming but something tells me by this fall a lot of people won't be so high on Microsoft or Sony once more info starts coming out.

Sony being the company that patented RFID based Blu Ray content locks, or did we just forget that was a thing that happened already?

Oh but it is ok right, because Sony told us they loved used games, so they couldn't possibly do anything bad!

@flacracker: People complaining about the price in pound sterling are obviously forgetting about VAT. Pretty sure that a lot of European states have pre-applied sales tax....

@amikron: This may be true, rumor has it there is no paywall for online play and it's £80 in my country. Sorry but I think this console is going to become very popular in the EU for this very reason.

EDIT: OK online is not free but that's still a considerable price cut.

That's incredible! Like a lot of people mentioned previously, Sony have made it an easy decision for PS4. I think more than the price, it's the sentiment that they are giving us way more respect than Microsoft.

Sony PS4 + PS Plus = $460 for first year

Xbox One including 1 year of Gold = $500

$40 difference if you want to play multiplayer

A couple of things. First, PS Plus is $50 a year. Xbox Live Gold is $60 a year. Second, I'm pretty sure I didn't hear ANYONE say that your first year of Gold was included in the Xbox One purchase price, which makes the difference for the first year $110, not $40. Finally, you're also discounting the fact that there are multiple no cost games included with the Plus subscription price, and have been for a year now. Live Gold, on the other hand has had 3 free games mentioned with it and they are 3, 4 and 6 years old. There is no chance the Xbox is even remotely close to being a better deal...

@dandead: I wish them luck and I sure hope they don't "pull a Sony" but I honestly don't expect any good behavior out of these companies at this point.

I honestly would love to take Sony at their word but I guess I just know better at this point than to trust any of these guys.

As someone who bought 360 day 1 and mostly played 360 versions of games all gen?

Someone who has been XBL member since Halo 2?

Someone who has 5-10 casual gamer friends that will buy what I buy?

Fuck off Microsoft, HELLO SONY.

absolutely, all of this, exactly. It's like you read my future post.

Holy shit, not only did Sony not fuck up, they completely crushed this. Console wars are kinda bullshit, naturally, but I don't see any way that the PS4 doesn't easily win the next-gen, short of serious publisher backlash against their refusal to attack used game sales.

Hell, I still don't even trust Sony as a company, largely because of how Sony-BMG/Sony Music Entertainment treats the music industry, but at least their console arm seems to be committed to doing the right thing here.

I will still get both consoles. I like Sony's policies (and obviously pricing) better, but I'm pretty sure I'll once again prefer the Xbox controller and XO did have a lot of interesting exclusives I want to play.

Man....never been so frustrated having so much invested in this freaking generation. Xbox is what my wife and I consume media on, have enjoyed the PS3 through a good friend after I gave mine up a couple of years ago, but crap on everything I have said leading up to this conference....Sony knocked it out of the park.

I don't want to build my foresight up too much, but it started to become apparent that this was their plan after the following things both happened (or didn't, as it were) in short order:

  • Microsoft held a business-heavy console unveiling that was extremely distasteful to the gaming audience and Sony responded by pointing to E3. People assumed that there might be a change in fortunes when the Playstation press conference was bogged down by the same crap with a much wider audience, but they're not idiots. If their plan had been to mimic the Xbox DRM, they would have gotten it out way ahead of "get people excited about your games" time. Instead, a perpetual motion hype machine was created for them as people awaited bad news.
  • After the XONE was revealed, when publishers began to toss out info on all of their next-gen IP, time after time the major players announced they had signed some sort of exclusivity deal with Microsoft. This reads very clearly as prodding Sony for not building similar restrictions into their console, which is only being discussed as a result of publisher complaints concerning revenue from sales.

Oh dear. Microsoft I'm afraid you have hamstrung and alienated your product before it is even made available to purchase. A higher price point, caused by insisting on a Kinect 2.0 be packed in with every XBONE? Restrictive, publisher driven drm policies? Oh dear, I can only imagine the row Microsoft and EA will be having this morning, "LOOK WHAT YOU MADE US DO!! ARE YOU FUCKING HAPPY NOW?"

A message to Microsoft:it's still not too late. In two weeks, quietly announce that you'll be doing a cheaper, non Kinect version, and tell us that you've had a "re think" on your Drm policies. I understand that this will be a humiliating climbdown, but better that than launching a product, that has so much vitriol against it, before its even at retail.

It's your choice, hubris or sales?

So the PS4 is more powerful and cheaper? Or has that changed? Last I heard albeit rumors (they are at least dev comments), Xbox was supposed to be a bit under powered compared to the PS4, correct me if Im wrong.

I was VERY pro MS last 2 gens (still owned a PS2-3), but with Sony getting their head out of their ass and FINALLY using PC based hardware I really dont have anything to complain about with Sony. I really hated their weird hardware and not giving two shit about being dev friendly.

MS is just fucking the dog on this stuff. Havent checked out either of the E3 shit yet, but Im actually not even interested in Xbox1 right now and that is pretty fucking big for me.....Ive always owned the 2 major consoles going back to SNES/Genesis.

Sony must be taking a big hit on the hardware since it has to cost as much as the Xbox One since they have the exact same hardware inside, Microsoft can easily do a price drop to match though.

People buy into hype real easily.

I'm not surprised they are "allowing used games" because Sony doesn't give two shits about screwing over developers or publishers to try and make in-roads with "gamers" (rather, the pure consumer version who aren't industry-savvy). Developers lose a lot of money to the used game racket and now Sony, the higher-end spec-wise of the two next-gen consoles, expects developers (and publishers) to just deal with it? Seriously? I'm not agreeing with how Microsoft is handling it but just ignoring it isn't right either.

Say what you want about Microsoft and a lot of their details, but someone on the console side was going to have to fight Gamestop sooner or later.

And Sony saying $400 doesn't mean shit without a spec list for that sku. Besides, Microsoft still has plenty of time to announce a subsidy plan for ~$100 - 200 or partnerships with cable companies (here in the US at least) and get a nice jab in before the round starts.

I actually didn't think that Microsoft did at all badly with their own E3 conference announcements, and the price of £429 didn't hit me too hard (at least, until I worked out that this makes it over $165 more expensive in the UK than it is in the US!) but Sony have absolutely killed here. The PS4 is nearly $125 cheaper than the XBox One in the UK.

The gap between XBox One and PS4 is so large now in all respects that surely Microsoft is going to have to climb down. Of its three USPs (the "infinite power of the cloud", the Kinect and TV services) the first two are actually disincentives to buy and the third is something that pretty much no one needs or is excited for. I honestly think that Microsoft is going to have to throw something other than old free games at consumers ... and soon.

Crazy this is my exact same scenario. Jumped on the OG Xbox for Halo2 and was a big fan of the 360. Though, in full disclosure I snagged a PS2 slim for $99 while my first red-ringed 360 was being replaced which I enjoyed other than the goddamn dual shock. If I could plug my 360 controller into the PS4 it would be a day one purchase ;-) Instead I'll wait til Spring 2014 once its gone through its paces a bit.

But the RAM Sony is putting in is really expensive while the RAM the Xbox is using costs next to nothing. I think that the hardware of both systems cost the about the same to make. But Sony will be loosing money while I think MS might make or at least go even on every system sold. In the end, if it's 400 or 500 bucks doesn't matter, the difference between the PS3 and 360 price came to nothing in the end. But I wouldn't find it impossible to see that MS lowers the price before launch or has a subscription version.

I am just awe struck at the turn this coming generation, you would think after the PS3 launch price making its sales lack the rest of the cycle that Microsoft would be aggressive with the price. If the trend from last generation keeps up we are going to see a reverse again and have sony on top.

It all remains to be seen but I am just lost for words, I was still thinking the Xbone might stand out infront but this just completely reversed my decision. PS4 could not have done what gamers wanted more, and Xbone could not have done any worse catering too said gamers. Its going to be another interesting cycle, here I was thinking it was just going to be a 'we are both going for the 400 mark and just do it again.

I want to see who's marketing strategy pays off more. PS4 going at the core gaming market and giving gamers what they want, or Xbone going for a more mass market in the hopes to give them a fixed installer base for the (possible) next generation. Wii went mass market and look where that left it, if either of the other 2 companies copied what nintendo did it probably wouldn't end well, seeing as the actual games sold ratio on Wii is incredibly low.

I do most of my gaming on a PC and have since the 90s. I only bought a XBox for the exclusives, now I borrowed a PS3 to catch up on the exclusives I missed (anyone wanna lend me the uncharted trilogy :D) - if it's true all the Xbox exclusives are coming to PC, then a PS4 is all I need to cover my bases. Oh right.... I have a wii u too... For some reason

I am conflicted, personally. I am a huge 360/Xbox gamer but... AAAAGH they did a damned good job.

Doesn't really change that the One has the games I'm more excited about, though.
