Sony Shutters Liverpool Studio, AKA Psygnosis

After nearly 30 years in business under various names, the studio behind the WipeOut series is no more.

Very few companies in the video game industry can proclaim to have a history that stretches all the way back to the seminal years of the industry we now hold so very dear. Sony Liverpool, once known as Psygnosis, was such a company. Until today.

Sony has announced that it will be shuttering the Liverpool studio, as part of a restructuring of its UK properties. The console maker's Liverpool offices will remain open, but the studio, which had in recent years been responsible for the WipeOut franchise, as well as Formula One racing titles, is finished.

Sony released the following statement on the closure.

As part of SCE Worldwide Studios, we do regular reviews to ensure that the resources we have can create and produce high quality, innovative and commercially viable projects in an increasingly competitive market place. As part of this process, we have reviewed and assessed all current and planned projects for the short and medium term and have decided to make some changes to our European Studios.

It has been decided that Liverpool Studio should be closed. Liverpool Studio has been an important part of SCE Worldwide Studios since the outset of PlayStation, and have contributed greatly to PlayStation over the years. Everyone connected with Liverpool Studio, past and present, can be very proud of their achievements.

However, it was felt that by focusing our investment plans on other Studios that are currently working on exciting new projects, we would be in a stronger position to offer the best possible content for our consumers.

Our Liverpool Facility will continue to operate, housing a number of other vital WWS!E and SCEE Departments.

This should not take anything away from the great work WWS are doing and the incredible games and services that we have made, and continue to make, both for this coming year and further in the future.

Originally founded in 1984 by Ian Hetherington and David Lawson, Psygnosis actually began as more of a publisher than developer, bringing out such heralded Amiga titles as Shadow of the Beast, and the original Lemmings games.

The company had been known as Sony Liverpool since 2001, but the developer had been under Sony's banner since the mid-'90s, where it developed properties for the original PlayStation, including G-Police, Colony Wars, and of course, WipeOut, which became the studio's most recognizable franchise.

Psygnosis also had an amusing run of peculiar licensed games under its belt, including SNES/Genesis/Sega CD titles based on '90s horror films Bram Stoker's Dracula, and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, as well as a PlayStation game loosely based on the Spice Girls cinematic tour de force Spice World.

The studio's final project was WipeOut 2048 for the PlayStation Vita.

I never could master the Wipeout games. (I tried the latest one on PS3 and Vita in demo form and just couldn't master them.) Perhaps I didn't give them enough time but I don't think this studio has a hit game during the entire PS3's life.

Shutters always sounds wrong. It sounds like the language has been broken, no matter where I read it. Whatcha say linguists?

It's American English for sure, and it's using the infinitive as the present-tense form of the verb, which seems weird.

UK people would just say 'shuts'.

It isn't a form of shut. Shutters comes from "closing the shutters" signifying something is closed for business.

I will remember them fondly. I loved the Wipeout series on PS1 as well as Colony Wars. The slick presentation and sharp controls of Wipeout 2 made it stand out and there was nothing quite like Colony Wars on the consoles. They brought us faux ads in Wipeout that other developers/publishers quickly turned into real ones in their games. And for someone who at the time did not have a PC capable to run games, Colony wars far outshined Wing Commander on the PS1. I think they made Crazy Ivan as well. That game was batshit insane. They were a real powerhouse on the PS1.

At this rate, only Activision and indies will be left by 2013. This is the 2012 the Mayans predicted.

Psygnosis where one of the studios deeply connected to my youth. Destruction Derby was always
able to heighten the mood through it's sheer hilariousity, I still have the voice of the announcer in
my head:"  Your car is about finished. TAKE it easyyy."

It's astonishing how much art, and with this videogames too, can do for you.  When talking with friends
of that time, it isn't:" Do you remember the years he battled cancer?", it is :" Do you remember his mad
skills at Destruction Derby? Those Need for Speed 2 Arcade races? Total Annihilition?"

We did so much more then sitting inside, playing games. But the memories are sparkling. I think that's
it with having  a great time. The moments are larger than the time you occupy. Ah well, now look at
grumpy old me, still something besides cynicism left in that old shell. :-)

Psygnosis made some amazing games back in the day and this is a brutal loss so near to the recent closure of Bizarre Creations. It's sad to see such creative and talented minds thrown aside.

Remember seeing that owl logo on Destruction Derby for the Playstation. Had some great memories with that game. Sad that their doors are closing.

I still remember how my jaw hit the fucking floor when I first saw Shadow of the Beast running on an Amiga. Wipeout was the game that sold the PS to me... and the PS2, PSP, PS3 and Vita. All those great Cold Storage tunes. SuperUltraMegaGigaBummer.

Same here. Adidas Power Soccer and Destruction Derby 2 were my first games for PSX, my first console, back in 1996. Good times.

I knew a guy who worked there and is now out of a job because of this, however I can hardly blame sony for it. The traditional track racing genre is just not very popular atm and until someone comes along and changes it up developers like this and Bizarre Creations are going to continue to close

Did Wipeout not sell well on the PS3 and Vita? This is a bummer...Wipeout, along with F-Zero, are my two favorite racing series.

Good luck, I hope you guys find jobs soon.

Ahhhhh.

Dude I have been imagining what a new G-Police would be like for years. Seriously can't stress how much this blows. I never got to play Colony Wars, but I'm thinking I'll track a copy down now.

I wonder if I can get my hands on those rights... kickstart something.

Even if you never played their games their influence is huge. Remember how cool WipeOut on PSX was? They helped define the PlayStation brand and in turn gaming in the 90s. Sad to see them go.

Is it hyperbolic to basically credit these guys with introducing the western world to electronic music as we know it today?

I used to have an Amiga and loved Psygnosis (even if they had some really difficult games).

I did not see Armour-Geddon mentioned and that is one I would love to see a remake of (it was a great concept)

Also the intro to Shadow of the Beast II will always have a special place in my heart.
