Two More Kindle Games Sneak Onto Amazon

Books? Pfft. Let's interact!

Earlier this year, Amazon announced the Kindle Development Kit, a platform in which content publishers could push out "active content" (read: games) for the e-ink reading device. If you're hip to the Kindle, then you've experienced the fruits of the KDK with Minesweeper and Gomoku, but two more games are now available, for free, via Amazon. Both are word-based, and neither as dazzling as a Bionic Commando Rearmed or as complex, as say, a Peggle.

Every Word and Shuffled Row are the new joints, as spotted by I Love My Kindle. Every Word is a simple word soup game where you attempt to spell as many words as possible from a six-letter jumble before a timer runs out. Shuffled Row is the same, except you'll have sixty letters to pick from. Exciting stuff, right?

Shuffled Row, the coolest game this side of Minesweeper.
Shuffled Row, the coolest game this side of Minesweeper.

The file sizes are 900KB each, so we're not talking top-of-the-line visuals. Also, if you have an original Kindle, it appears as though these games are just too hardcore for your reader. Consider an upgrade (or an iPad).

The Kindle isn't a powerhouse platform for games. Heck, it can't even push out color, so Unreal Engine 3 is definitely out of the picture. But I'm guessing that multimedia is the direction Amazon wants to head towards at some point down the line. Games will certainly be a part of this, so says my crystal ball, which has this weird image of the App Store floating in the middle of its inky abyss.

I like how we don't report on iPhone games, but this book reader is front page news.

I do want to buy one for books, and playing a little sudoku could be cool, though.

I'm actually interested in the Shuffled Row Game. May have to get for my Kindle.  I don't think the Kindle is a gaming platform nor should it try to be, but a word game seems like a perfect fit.

Wow Brad, why you such a hater? The Kindle was designed to be a reading device not a game-playing device. Putting Text Twist-style games on it is just trying to get some extra usefulness out of the device in a way that effectively utilizes the hardware available. Comparing Kindle games to stuff like Bionic Commando Rearmed and Unreal Engine 3 is just silly.

I remember Jeff saying once that Giant Bomb was going to be the website that wasn't going to cop an attitude about games. But that's just what is happening here. When Brad Nicholson and Matt Kessler started posting, I was happy for them getting the job and hopeful they would blend in well with the others. But lately, they are just turning Giant Bomb into Kotaku; and I don't like Kotaku.

In "news" posts about iPad games, do you make snide comments about how the iPad can't run Crysis? No? Then STFU.

BTW, yes, I do own a Kindle. I knew exactly what it could and couldn't do, and I paid money for it, and I am happy with what it can do. I have a few niggles with the interface, I hope that the technology improves so that contrast is higher and resolution sharper. But overall I'm happy with it the way it is, because I want to read on it. I may decide to buy one of these games as well; or not. That's my decision. But if all you can do is write a post to piss all over something you decided wasn't for you...that is not what I came to GB for.

I want sub-$100, and I want it to become such a standard that no publisher would even consider NOT making an ebook version available. Adding crappy word game support isn't going to achieve either of those goals.

I've said it on the Tested Kindle articles, but even though I'm the target audience for this thing (college kid who likes reading and has lots of travel time), I simply can't afford to drop over $100 for the ability to buy books, even though yes, they are cheaper than paper books, and yes, I hate physical media and encourage an all digital future.

Aren't books (excluding text books) dirt cheap used online anyway?

The allure of digital book reading becomes slightly more enticing. The attraction of the Kindle would be helped along with some mindless way to break up book reading.

Nothing really wrong with trying to make the most out of a device like the Kindle. Makes it more worthwhile to keep, although I've still got no use for it.

I kinda wonder what percentage of Kindle users are interested in games for the device. It would make sense that if you own a Kindle you probably own a cell phone, and there are considerably more compelling game options available for phones.

I'm quite sure that, that is not their intent.... to compete with Apple. It's a different platform....

I guess it's alright for those who already have a kindle, but it certainly isn't something that would draw me to it. If I wanted anything other than a e-reader dedicated strictly to the reading thing... I'd be going with the iPad right now.
