While I don't have interviews from the developer as proof, it wouldn't surprise me if the overall art style of the characters in the game are directly influenced by Buddhist statues. This, of course, is pretty obvious, but it's fun to see how little of a leap the game takes from the actual statues.

Well, I think the game makes up for being so close by having robots and spaceships as well.
