Ugh no thank you. Maybe you weren't here when it happened, but there was a huge amount of backlash when she appeared on the Bombcast the last time. There was not just one, but two massive hate threads about her. Maybe she would be better sober (less obnoxious interruptions, like how Metal Gear Solid is the greatest art piece ever, how Resident Evil should have more sex, and how Microsoft is for frat boys) but I don't know...

As for the article itself, standard Gamasutra style bullshit. Who cares about how Bayonetta is portrayed? It's a video game, not an art house indie film.

I didn't mind her,  of course I kept in mind that she'd been drinking so perhaps I was a little more tolerant about it.

Plus I think her articles are well written and she has good opinions, instead of taking the easy route and jumping on the feminism bandwagon about -everything-.

@Milkman: Maybe. If this turns into a giant Leigh Alexander hate thread you have the right to virtually bitch slap me. But I hope our community has learned better at this point.
@Hailinel: Nah. I can see why people think stuff like Ico and Braid are artsy and how the medium as a whole can be considered artistic. But please, let's not go into that debate again.

Good read.  I suppose it will make me think a bit more before I rush to call something exploitative.  Of course, I don't think it's possible for me to enjoy a Hideki Kamiya game at this point so I doubt I'll be giving Bayonetta a second chance.  I am, however, obligated to post in this thread, being a member of the Leigh Alexander defense force on Giantbomb.

As I've said elsewhere (you know where) Leigh Alexander actually has some interesting and insightful things to say about video games. The only thing that let her down last time was her delivery. This article was pretty cool to read, and a refreshing antidote to the usual knee-jerk reactions that a game like this can illicit. Even if you don't agree with what she's saying, you can at least admit she's able to back up her opinion and line of thought with well constructed prose.

I actually liked that podcast, and despised the community backlash against her, I was new to the forums then and when I saw how most (Not all) of you guys reacted to her, I was appalled,

I agree with that article completely. The whole game is over the top sex and violence that just barely goes into silly...and I love it, and Bayonetta as a character fits perfectly.

Without speaking about the E3 podcast debacle, I'd like to say that her article was a pretty good read, she's a solid writer who makes some excellent points, whether you agree with her or not. My only problem with her is that she often feels so self-serious about whatever she's talking about. But in this case, she knows her subject well; Bayonetta is ridiculous- her reactions are adjusted accordingly.

That was actually an interesting read. When I see Bayonetta, I really only think of it as porn with a good combat system.
It's good to see a female opinion on something, without them just saying "HAHA LULZ! I'M A FEMALE GAMER!".

I thoroughly enjoyed reading that article. Like Red said, it was neat to get the female perspective on a game that very easily could be criticized for hypersexualism.

I couldn't agree more.  She was even cool enough to publicly apologize for the whole situation.  People really need to let it go.  I also agree with her article here.

All my girlfriends mates love the game also.  It's good to see women who are able to see the intention, and funny and telling to see men that don't

Oh, and btw, I told you so. to whoever told me that she'd kick up a fuss in my blog, I said then if she had any intelligence, she wouldn't.

Great read! I completely agree with the article I (still have no intention of playing the game since I didn't really enjoy Devil May Cry all that much, but that's just me)

P.S. Am I the only one who finds that character completely unattractive?

She's supposed to look odd because her style follows this trend from the early 1900's, or some time before the 1950's. I think it might have been Linkyshinks who explained this to me about a month ago or so, but back in the day women were drawn with extremely disproportioned limbs and it fit some sort of style. That's why Bayonetta looks so weird. In terms of sexually she is just too weird for me but as a character she's amazing.
