Better Than It Has Any Right To Be
After an exceptionally long dose of hype, Bayonetta is finally unleashed on the gaming world and one of the more intense character action games is let loose. A game that is proudly an opus to style and flash, Bayonetta takes the gameplay model of Devil May Cry and makes it significantly more fun and enjoyable and provides a much more enjoyable main character to manipulate.
To describe the story is to give it more meaning than the writers did. It is an absurd story with almost no semblance to actual logic. You are Bayonetta and you are seeking to kill angels. You have a sidekick who is an annoying Mafia-type that seems to have no business being involved as he seems to do nothing. The game does not appear to take it itself all that seriously and, thus, is willing to simply have fun with all of the silliness. As insane as you think much of the game is, you get the distinct feeling that the characters on-screen are even more aware that this whole affair is absurd.
What Bayonetta lacks in storyline depth (which is not an inconsiderable amount, mind you) it more than makes up with an incredibly deep combat system that somehow takes about three buttons and produces dozens of attack combos. It is a game that is quite easy to do really cool looking attacks with, but that will take you a lot of time to become actually good at the combat system to be able to really dominate your foes. It constantly rewards you for trying new things and that is an absolute necessity in this type of game.
This is a game well worth looking into and spending some hours with. I don't think it's worth $60 personally, but the eventual sequel likely will be. This out Devil May Cry's Devil May Cry. Simply the best character-driven action game on the market today --- well, unless you count that God of War remake on the PS3.
