Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
Beetoms are a species of parasitic creatures in Super Metroid. They are fast moving and leap at Samus in an attempt to latch onto her.
Boyons are a species of spherical, jelly-like creatures that appear in Super Metroid.
Cacatacs are a species of cactus-like creatures from Super Metroid. They reside in the Brinstar, Norfair, and Maridia areas of planet Zebes.
Placing the player in an environment and making them feel alone. Games often use this for atmospheric effect.
A style of action-adventure gameplay revolving around exploring a labyrinth with the necessity of locating new items and equipment to progress beyond otherwise impassable obstacles. The concept is named for its common usage in the Metroid and Castlevania franchises. While the term most commonly refers to 2D games, it can also refer to 3D games.
Sidehoppers are recurring enemies from the Metroid series that jump from side to side to crush their foes.
Zoomers are basic enemies from the Metroid series. They move in a set pattern, and are capable of climbing walls and ceilings.
