Chrono Trigger Review
Chrono Trigger for the DS is the latest port for the game that many would say is the greatest game ever created. You will take on the role of a regular guy who ends up going all over time trying to right the wrongs, and gaining valuable allies along they way.
The sounds were what you would expect from a SNES game that was ported on the DS. I'm not saying that is a bad thing, but what I will say is that this is one of the few games where I actually kept the volume on the entire time.
The controls are easy to understand and get the job done. There are a couple of times where you need to do button presses in a specific order to solve a puzzle and in those times the buttons might not react as fast as you can go, but other than that its solid.
The graphics are once again the results of a port. I did like the fact that there were animated cut scenes that looked good on the DS screen. The over world map looks good too, but the character does look very lack-luster. In actuality there were several times that I was convinced that my character had morphed into a chick without my knowledge.
The game play is probably what makes people think so highly of this game. It not only has a unique and captivating story, but it also has a good sense of balanced battling, and leveling in a manner that causes the player to feel like they are really getting somewhere. One of my personal favorites is the fact that battles happen where you are. There is no different screen, it all happens right where you're attacked. The timing, the attacks, the techniques, all of it allowed me to ignore the fact that I might be facing off against the same set of monsters for the 300th time.
I have to admit that at first I believed that this game wasn't going to have a hold over me because of the fact that it is a port, and to be honest I'd never played the original. I figured that the hype would be so great that I would be completely disappointed once I actually played the game, I was very wrong about that, what I found was a game that I could not put down. The only thing that seemed strange was the Arena, and from my understanding it was something that was added on. If you take the Arena out of the equation this game is a must, even though its a port. This game has to get a 9.7 out of 10.
