One of the Underdogs of the year has come on top!
I am not a huge fan of survival horror, but I know what I like.
Resident Evil 4 was by far one of the best survival horror game that was released on the Gamecube and I have to admit that I have mostly looked to that franchise for my blood and gore itch. Now of course notable references has to be given to the Silent Hill series, but nothing has blown me away quite as much as Dead Space has.
All in all it took me about thirteen hours to get through the game and I loved every minute of it. From the character animations, to the suspenseful atmosphere, there was nothing that would keep me from being completely roped in this game.
When it comes down to it the story is phenomenal, telling, of course the fall of the Ishimura and the eventual infestation of the Necromorphs, being told through audio and text logs, as well as your own path through the ruined Planetcracker. The combat is precise and amazing, making the dismemberment not only posible but necessary as well, adding to the combat is of course the selections of weapons available to you. From your trusty Plasma cutter to the oh so satisfying contact rifle, you will have no shortage of carnage wielding choices to inflict satisfying crunching noises.
Completeing the game gives you some unlocks that are amazingly sweet, and one that I haven't had the gall to try for yet and that is the Impossible Mode. I finished the game on Hard kids, on HARD.....and that name alone has made me paralyzed in fear. But I will give it a shot eventually, that being said, I would play through it again in a hearbeat. The achievements pay out fairly well and other things like the shooting gallery and zero g basketball are quite fun as little time wasters.
When all is said in done, Dead Space is easily one of the big hits of the year and I am very pleased to have had a chance to enjoy the game and take it in for what it is worth and feel I got my money out of the game. Totally awesome from start to finish.
