What can I say?
What can I say? Doom, the legendary game that pretty much started it all, is....well......still the legendary game that pretty much started it all. You know as well as I do how about how Doom was the game that put the FPS genre on the map and how, to this day, FPS games still bare it's eternal influence.
It's amazing how many people still play Doom to this day. Thanks to ID Software releasing countless level editors and add-ons, Doom is very much alive and well. I still play every once in a while as well and it's just as brutal and amazing as it was when it first came out. That's not to say that it's the greatest FPS or anything like that. Thanks to Doom, the FPS genre has evolved leaps and bounds in the past two decades. It's like the video game equivalent of Nirvana's album Nevermind. It's surely not the greatest album of all time, but it's certainly one of the most influential.
I remember an interview with a previous Microsoft employee and I remember him telling the interviewer that at one point Doom was considered equal to a religious phenomenon. Of course it was. Who can deny how simple, violent, and fun Doom was and still is? If John Romero hadn't been responsible for creating the "Deathmatch", where would gaming be today? Doom was so popular that, at one point, Bill Gates considered buying ID Software himself. The game is also responsible for several amazing sequels, numerous comic books, and even a Hollywood film. Ok, Doom was a pretty shitty movie (as are most film based on a video game), but it's just more evidence of how influential Doom really is.
Doom is just simply, a classic. There's no debate. We all know how revolutionary Doom is from countless reviews, lists, statements, etc etc etc. You know as well as I do what Doom has done for the FPS genre and really video gaming in general. There's really nothing more to say. It's Doom.
