If you're into books based on rich game worlds, know that a Fable III novel is coming this October. If you're into unlocks, know that said book will ship with a unique weapon code (voucher) for the game.

"Fable: The Balverine Order" has been recently listed on Amazon.com. Set to ship this October 5, the book will tell the tale of two Albion-based friends and their journey to find an elusive Balverine. But as things tend to turn forever for the worse in the Fable universe, their quarry begins to hunt them instead.

Fable III is all about touching and killing.
Fable III is all about touching and killing.

Notable comic writer Peter David is author, and you may recognize the name. He's credited as a writer in two mainstream-ish titles; the biggest of which is last year's Summer of Arcade release, Shadow Complex.

Neat, but what about that weapon code? Details are slim, but if you look at the cover of the book Amazon has on its site right now, you'll notice a small promise for a "unique weapon" code written on a band.

That's all we know about the code, but it'll be interesting to see how Lionhead integrates the the item into the game. The weapons in Fable III respond to you; they morph based on what you kill and how fight. They're also tied to your Gamerscore. The design is such that a weapon feels like it's your weapon, not Iron Sword #457, or in this case, "The Balverine Order" Wolf Axe-Slayer-Thing #352. At first glance, weapon unlocks seems self-defeating. By nature, weapon DLC (or even unlocks) is always over-the-top, powerful stuff. How will it fit your character? Will this DLC grow with you and adapt to how you fight?

Oh, so I walk into the bookstore, copy the code and go download my weapon?

    Awesoooome.

I seriously hope they have to activate the book first, or else this is the worst idea ever.

Well, pretty soon you'll have to buy the companion books to get online access (which are, more often that not, big steaming piles of shit).  So if you want to buy into the business model, then go ahead my friend.

I read that the unlockable weapon is supposed to show your "love of reading." Sounds interesting. Hopefully, it will be an over-sized book that you can use to brain people... Perhaps on a hilt or handle of some sort.

Sounds like good, old-fashioned cross promotion to me.  I doubt it'll sell that many more copies of the book, but I suppose any little bit helps, right?

One of the reasons I love bioware games is because they develop back stories with books. I read all the books before I play the games. That's not going to happen with SC2 due to them having 15 of them, but otherwise...

Completely off topic, but for some weird reason when I glanced over the word "Hitting" I read "Hitman" then I proceeded to read "this fall" and I went HOLY SHIT, then I actually read the thing properly and words cannot express my disappointment....

lol well I'm just a dumbass I read the title right but I spent like 30 seconds trying to figure what "hitting this fall" meant.  For some reason in my mind, I pictured this:
     Hitting
     Hitting

The plot isn't the important part, its the details of the characters, the humor, and the world.

Also its not like there will be ONE WEAPON in the game, its possible this will have added visual flair, some unique effects. Maybe I'm misunderstanding some of the stuff in the article. But yeah, there are ways for them to add new weapons without it being weird and static.

I don't mind this, as I've quite enjoyed books either related indirectly or completely directly to game.
The book; "The Stolen Throne" was a great read and the Mass Effect books were awesome (Well the first one was at least.)

Let's hope the characters in this Fable III book don't communicate by farting and doing some stupid russian squat-jump-kick dancing movement to boost peoples impressions of you.
Peter, it's a lame feature in your video-games, and it'd be extremely lame to read about in one of your franchise books. PLEASE STOP DOING IT IN BOTH! PLEASEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You just sound like someone who thinks everything was the best in 'the old days'

    There's a fable book coming.
To sweeten the deal, there is a code for the game, which hardcore fable fans should enjoy considering they went out of their way to purchase it.

If people want to buy DLC and extras let them. It's not like the industry is going to stop putting out map packs or pre order codes, it's just what happens now. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
