Okay after watching the alpha gameplay video here's what seems to be apparent.
- they took FFXI and remade charecter models with updated graphics (and it looks damn good). If you check out the charecter it moves and has the same postuer as the elvaan did. The same face is present on the human charecter as the hume in FFXI and he too moves the same. -An interface very similar to WoW. see the action bar style clicking that can go on at the bottom of the screen? They stated they were taking ideas from other MMos and it looks like this is a big one, the Old republic does it also. (if this is from some other game before wow i havn't played it so forgive me) -bad guys are still stupid looking. giant caterpillars (which were actaully pretty tight) rabbits and fat chickens? -An exp system is probably disguised somewhere in there. Maybe similar to FFXI's weopon skill system. the very slow process of leveling up your skill for a weopon unlocked different moves. -It also looks like classic jobs such as white mage, warrior, paladin, thief, might not be how things work this time around with new jobs like warlock and enchanter being added.
I've got family big into FFXI, and every time I hang out with them, it breaks my heart a little knowing they're wasting so much time with such a terrible game. :-(

I don't think it's terrible... It's just unconventional.
Anyway, FFXIV looks really interesting, and I have a bunch of friends that are going to make the jump from XI, but I think I'll have to see how much of my time is going to be spent playing The Old Republic first.
