Happy new year, and I hope you have a wonderful year ahead of you! It's been a year since my last blog filled with stats, so I thought I'd continue this new tradition now that we're stepping into a new year! From the very first quick look (Legendary, August 27 2008) to the very last of 2013, we're now looking at 1,558 videos!

Adding all the videos together in length they add up to a total of 794 hours 6 minutes and 29 seconds. That's 47,646 minutes and 29 seconds! If you started watching them right now without pause you wouldn't be done until 33 days later, so start that marathon already!

Top 5 Shortest Quick Looks

The top 5 shortest quick looks are the same as last year, meaning that no quick look posted during 2013 made the list. I guess that's a good thing?

Top 5 Longest Quick Looks

In the top 5 longest quick looks we have 3 new winners from 2013, and they're all in the top spots! There are now 72 quick looks that are longer than an hour in length.

Stats By Year

  • 8 quick looks during 2008 (Average length 12,9 minutes)
  • 231 quick looks during 2009 (Average length 21,3 minutes) (4,44 per week on average)
  • 344 quick looks during 2010 (Average length 25,5 minutes) (6,61 per week on average)
  • 343 quick looks during 2011 (Average length 32,1 minutes) (6,59 per week on average)
  • 342 quick looks during 2012 (Average length 34,3 minutes) (6,58 per week on average)
  • 290 quick looks during 2013 (Average length 38,3 minutes) (5,57 per week on average)

This is probably the most interesting stat for me. The number of quick looks dropped quite a bit in 2013, but the average length went up by quite a lot. This could be a result of a console generation slowing down, and my guess is that we'll see the number of quick looks jump up again in 2014 with two new hot consoles on the market. Either way, I'm glad to see an increase in average length!

So there you have it! I hope you all enjoyed 2013 as much as me, even if we all experienced the tragic loss of a hero on the staff. It might not mean a lot coming from me, but I miss you a lot Ryan Davis.

I'll see you in 2014!

/ Chris aka Cincaid

Fantastic! I love it. Quite the stats.

I'd guess part of the drop in Quick Looks was also due to Ryan's passing(one less main player), but I would be curious about whether you include stats from Patrick's Quick Look Solos or glimpses at indie games, as those seem like they would fit. Not to mention how the growth of Unprofessional Fridays factors into it. I would love to see even more raw data! ;)

Oh noes! Those Sprint 8 and GTI club links send me to a 404. Or is it... 40(201)4?

Anyways, nice stats. Here's to another 33 straight days full of GB goodness yet to come!

Stats include everything that's filed under the "quick look"-subcategory on the website! I believe all of Patrick's solo stuff and even encyclopedia bombastica are included there.

Ah, I see. Good. I wonder if someone could figure out how many games and for how long they played them during Unprofessional Fridays, because I think many of the Quick Looks they might have done in the past(especially shorter ones) have now been rolled into Unprofessional Fridays videos. Which would account for a noticeable drop this year. Just a thought.

Considering the implications of this data is interesting.

Good job on these. I've got some raw numbers over here http://qlcrew.com/timeline.php.

Brad and Vinny did more Quick Looks this year than ever before, but the lack of Jeff & Ryan and Patrick & Ryan duos took a significant hit on the overall numbers anyway.

They started doing a bunch more 3 or 4 person QL's in the back half of the year, so that's another factor. Which I'm fine with, group QL's rule.

Pretty cool stuff!

I was always curious about the Quick Look data from the Giant Bomb side of the fence. They can't just be making longer videos more frequently for kicks, right?

I mean, that's probably some of it, of course. But I'm sure they have data on their end that shows, in pain mathematical terms, that people are watching their extended content front to back. Sort of like the Youtube Analytic where content creators can gauge average retention.

Thanks for putting this all together, @cincaid!

There's been enough supplemental stuff (like Bioforge and Dark Souls) that it's been easy to forget it's been so long since an official endurance run.

Y'know, I am not one of those guys who thinks there has been a drop year after year, though this year it did seem noticeable, but understandable with all that happened. However, technically those stats prove there have been a decline since 2010 in the number of quick looks. The fact it was always by one until this year almost makes me think it was some long con trolling going on.

Blows my mind that there have been that many games released each year though. usually by the end of the year I can only think of a handful of noteworthy ones, yet here they are doing hundreds of quick looks.

I think I remember on the podcast they were saying the Quick Looks are probably more important than any preview articles they could write, possibly even up there with reviews as what they think the most important content is for users to make their minds up about a game.

So yeah, I can't see them reducing them. I bet it's just there's a whole load of other content that kinda feels like its increasing the time between QL's.

Brads DOTA 2 sessions for instance... -_-

Eh, I still need to watch their unofficial Endurance Runs (Load Our Last Souls etc) before I can start thinking about a daily series of gamin.

Agreed but Dark Souls wasn't the full game where BioForge was. Either way I could go for another real ER with videos every day, something exciting and thrilling about it.

@mrcaptain: I'm not sure there's enough to call that a trend. The two years prior it fell once per year (which isn't really, in my opinion, worth the inevitable annual forum thread of "Why aren't there as many Quick Looks as there used to be?!" And this year, I'm gonna say there was a pretty obvious reason for substantially fewer QLs. Plus we got Breaking Brad and Load Our Last Souls to smile at.
