What is this place?

In this thread i want to make it a good place to track your backlog and perhaps keep motivated to keep your backlog from growing. Alot of us probably buy way more games then we'll ever get around to playing (thanks Steam) so i figured i would start a similar thread here that i saw on Neogaf.

How the Game is Played.

  1. Start out at 0 points, either starting in January or Now....Your choice (would prefer January if you remember)
  2. If you add a game to your Backlog it counts as a -1 be it a gift, PS+ Freebie, found a cartridge in a parking lot, etc
  3. If you beat a game its a +1
  4. If it is multiplayer focused you have to play it for a good chunk of it, just whenever you feel you got your worth out of it.
  5. Double dips of games (HD remakes and GOTY you have already beaten before act as a 0)
  6. Aim for the highest possible positive score
  7. At the end of the year ill try to give out a psn/steam/360 card as a reward for the one with the highest score or most shrinkage

Updates

Can Contain

  • Bought: Obviously the Games you bought, don't need to be in spoilers i just did it since i did updates for the past months (which you could do if you remember)
  • Beaten: The games you finished in the month or since last update
  • Monthly Score: (Games Beaten in Month) - (Games Bought in Month)
  • Total Score: Monthly scores added together
  • Could contain some impressions or something
  • Could contain now playing, or your backlog priorities
  • You could ask the community what games you should play next if you're feeling indecisive.

@c0l0nelp0c0rn1: I thought in golf you wanted the lowest score, here you want a high score. But i guess in both 0 will be par and adding a game is like adding a stroke. My time with Yoshi on the course really taught me nothing about golf.

does HD remakes or game of the year edition that you beaten before count as -1 or not count at all?

So when you say "highest" score do you mean closest to 0? Also, say you completed a game you bought 3 month ago, does that still count or will that game just be a -1 forever and ever?

Great idea BTW, now I know what I'm doing tomorrow! :D

@mikeydct: If you buy a HD remake or a GOTY edition of a game that you have played before, count it as a 0

@civid: If you finished a game you bought before this started it counts as a +1, you are getting rid of the game from your backlog. Since you can finish previously bought games you should aim for the highest positive score you can

@mikeydct: You can count games you bought last year as long as you finish them this year. Since you bought 9 and finished 21 this year your score would be +12

This seems cool - I'd like to join in! I'll put some progress through April (I don't anticipate buying anything more or beating any games within the next week).

January:

Bought:

  • The Secret World
  • Droid Assault
  • Dead Space 3

Beat:

  • Alan Wake
  • Dead Space 3
  • Mark of the Ninja
  • DmC Devil May Cry

Month Score: +1

Year Score: +1

Not sure what constitutes "beating" TSW, but I haven't gotten to Transylvania or anything yet, so I'll leave that on the list. I'd say Alan Wake was my favorite game of the month, as much as I like the Dead Space franchise.

February:

Bought:

  • System Shock 2
  • Proteus

Month Score: -2

Year Score: -1

Nothing that I can remember beating. I wanted to see what System Shock 2 was about, and I'm not sure that I'm really ever going to get far in it - just wanted to see the history. And I got Proteus as a gift... not sure when I'll get around to that!

March:

Bought:

  • Bioshock Infinite
  • Ridiculous Fishing
  • Fire Emblem: Awakening

Beat:

  • Bioshock Infinite
  • Ridiculous Fishing (insofar as I saw the credits)

Month Score: -1

Year Score: -2

Finally bought a 3DS! I love Awakening - just started a hard mode run, seeing how that will go. I also bought Ridiculous Fishing for someone else's phone just so I could play it - I then "beat" it within the day. Also been trying to get through Dragon Age: Origins to moderate effect.

April:

Bought:

  • Pokemon White

Month Score: -1

Year Score: -3

With school getting busy, I haven't had much time to play games, but I'm looking forward to a less busy summer schedule to get through some backlog!

January

Bought

  • Borderlands 2
  • Metro 2033

Beaten

  • Borderlands 2

Monthly score -1

Final score -1

February

Bought

  • System Shock 2
  • God of War HD
  • Sleeping Dogs
  • Halo ODST

Beaten

  • God of War HD
  • Halo ODST

Monthly score -2

Final score -3

March

Bought

  • Mass Effect 3
  • Halo Reach
  • Condemned: Criminal Origins

Beaten

  • Condemned: Criminal Origins

Monthly score -2

Final score -5

I played about 5 hours of Mass Effect 3 and just.. I don't know what it is, ME1 and 2 is still some of my favorite games of this generation (ME1 one of my favorite games of all time), but I just can't get excited about playing ME3.

April

Bought

  • Okami HD
  • GRAW 2
  • Hitman: Blood Money HD
  • Spliter Cell: Double Agent

Beaten

  • GRAW 2
  • Sleeping Dogs
  • Halo Reach
  • Assassins Creed Revelations

Monthly score 0

Final score -5

I agree with Vinny that Sleepy Dawgs is A LOT of open world fun, its third act just really drags, which is a real shame. Still, hell of a game. GRAW 2 really surprised me, that game holds up really, really well.

Both Reach and Revelations fucking draaaaags, and really can't hold up when compared to their predecessors. Still excited to play AC3, when it falls in price, I still adore the games

Right now I'm hoping to complete Blood Money, Double Agent and, if I have it in me, finally complete Amnesia. Double Agent is a fucking mess on the PS3 and, again, Amnesia freaks me the fuck out (I'm haven't even met any monsters yet), so both of those are probably going to be slow burns. I also really want to finish Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Halo Reach and Okami HD

Oh my god, this is going to be depressing.

I don't exactly remember when I finished what, I'll just marked games that I have beaten until now.

January

Added to backlog:

  • Star Wars: KOTOR
  • Star Wars: KOTOR II
  • Deponia
  • Home
  • Hotline Miami (finished!)
  • Red Faction: Armageddon
  • Deadlight (finished!)
  • Iron Brigade
  • Toy Soldiers
  • Mark of the Ninja (finished!)
  • Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet (finished!)

February

  • Unmechanical (finished!)
  • The Path
  • Krater
  • Sugar Cube: Bittersweet Factory
  • Fortix 2 (finished!)
  • Don't Starve
  • Midnight Club 2 (finished! - well, haven't, but I'm done with it, which should count - no longer in my backlog)
  • Spectraball (same as above)
  • Counter Strike: Global Offensive (played quite a bit, I would consider it finished)

March

  • XCOM: Enemy Unknown (finished!)

April

  • Killing Floor
  • Red Orchestra 2
  • pid
  • Zombie Driver HD
  • Botanicula (finished!)
  • Mass Effect 2 (finished earlier on xbox, but bought Origin version)
  • Manhunt
  • Bully: Scholarship Edition

Un-honorable mentions that have been in my backlog for-fucking-ever and I feel I have to count as -1:

  • Fallout: New Vegas
  • Knights of Honor
  • Orcs Must Die!
  • STALKER: Call of Pripyat
  • Vessel
  • Saints Row The Third
  • Metro 2033
  • Prototype
  • Assassins Creed: Brotherhood
  • Dead Space - played quite a bit, but never finished :-(

Well, that seems my score for this year is... -28!...fuck.

@thebunnyhunter: But if we don't use golf scoring how could I possibly compete?

Sarcasm aside, I think it's a great idea but I won't be motivated enough to do it.

This is cool, but a personal recipe for disaster and madness.

I will be quite happy to finish three particular PS2 games this summer. Two of which I bought new at retail.

This is pretty awesome. So what about games that are just meant to be played forever without an endgame? I'm curious because I put like 20 hours into both Sim City and Terraria but I'm not sure how to count them, so I'm just making them 0's for now. Also do games you bought and beat in the same month count as +1s or 0s?

January

Bought: DMC

Beat: Sleeping Dogs, Pokemon White 2

Monthly Score: +1

Total Score: 1

February

Bought: Fire Emblem: Awakening

Beat: Fire Emblem: Awakening

Monthly Score: 0

Total Score:1

March

Bought: Sim City

Beat: Starcraft, Little Inferno, Sim City?

Monthly Score: +2

Total Score: 3

April

Bought: Bioshock Infinite, Super Metroid, New Super Mario Bros U, Terraria

Beat: Bioshock Infinite, Super Metroid, DMC, Terraria?

Monthly Score: 0

Total Score: 3

Looks like I'm the only one in positive credit, I may have done it wrong though. Once the first humble bundle I'm interested in comes around, this will certainly change anyways. The trick is to not buy games until you want to play them.

I would be down for this except for the fact that my back catalog mostly consists of PS1 and PS2 games.. and much older PC games. Then again, I buy so few games nowadays that I'd probably be able to keep pace pretty easily.

Anyway, good luck to everyone trying to keep up with their gaming purchases!

For games that can not really be completed (like terraria, minecraft, simcity, or a multiplayer only game you payed for) you can count them as +1 when you feel like you played enough of them or when you think you experienced everything they have to offer. Also games you played and bought in the same month count as a 0

April Update: For Realsies this time

yeah its been only a week but that was mid aApril and i had some stuff to add: 9 more games added and 5 more beaten

Bought / Beaten List

Bought: 19

  • Grand Theft Auto IV Complete Edition
  • Antichamber
  • Hell Yeah
  • Scribblenauts Unlimited
  • Guacameele!
  • Red Orchestra 2

  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution
  • Guacameele!
  • Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition
  • 3D Dot Game Heroes
  • Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten
  • Vanquish
  • Syndicate

There ya go, had to put this line in so the spoilers wouldnt be all weird

Score: -9

Games Bought this year: 57

Games Beaten this year: 24

Score Total : -33

Thoughts in Spoilers to not take up the room

Some thoughts

  • Vanquish could of been so much crazier. They should of just dove of the cliff of sanity. The only time i'd say i wish this game had more Quick Time events, cause the ones they had we pretty fucking cool. Over all i liked the game despite some very frustrating moments.
  • Ah Disgaea 4, I held fantasies of maxing out at level 9999 but that was too hardcore for me. Just had to settle for lv 250 Valvatorez finishing the game for me single handed. Sure enemies surround me, cause this Bloody Hole isnt gonna get bloody by itself.
  • Finished Darksiders 2, althought it was technically May when i did. Overall that game took a while before I warmed up to it.
  • Fuck Secrets of Monkey Island, i just had to Light the Cannon to get to Act 3 but no.....I didnt have anything at all to burn. Threw everyhting into the pot and had nothing left, no map...no buisness cards....no shirts....Nothing. I had to start over again and save the buisness cards.
  • I really really want to get to at least 0 at some point

Other than that i should aim at finishing AC: Brotherhood , Mark of the Ninja and perhaps Mass Effect 2. Have a ton of Indie games i could burn though to raise that score. And Hopefully i like ME2 alot more than what i played of ME1.

How about everyone else, you get anything done?

Struggling with Hitman Absolution, which is an absolute bitch. I respect how IO has used the Hitman mechanics of old to make a damn good stealth game, but MOTHERFUCKER THAT FUCKING CHECKPOINTSYSTEM IS BULLSHIT! Even if you manage to find a fucking checkpoint, and believe me, they're hidden extremely well, guess what, everything resets to a fixed point in the stage, if you use them. So all enemies respawn. This system is made by an infant. It makes the game unnecessarily frustrating and annoying. Also, enemy placement is cheap as fuck way to often. But yeah still alright game, sorry about the rant

May (so far)

Bought

  • Hitman Absolution
  • Cathrine
  • Demons Souls
  • Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
  • Thomas Was Alone
  • DUST 514

Beaten

  • Hitman Absolution
  • Demons Souls
  • Thomas Was Alone
  • Far Cry 3

Monthly score: -2

Overall score: -7

Demons Souls was surprisingly short (took me about 25 hours to beat) and considering it doesn't really have a final boss, I was kinda let down by the very abrubt ending. Still an amazing game, I can't wait to get my hands on Dark Souls. Absolution turned into a real shit-turd at about the last third act. At that point I just fought my way through it as fast as possible to get it over with, it really falls apart. Didn't even finish the epilogue, because fuck that shit. Fucking shitty stage forcing you to lockpick a gate, surrounded by heavily armed guards IN THE MIDDLE OF AN OPEN YARD. Fuck that shit. Looking forward to Cathrine and the rest of Hitman Blood Money

Oh man I missed this thread! Not interested in the prize, just fun stuff to track.

Jan. 2013

Acquired

  • nothing

Beat

  • Sleeping Dogs
  • Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

Monthly Score +2

Total Score +2

Sleeping Dogs is one of those great guilty pleasure games. I can see why Vinny likes it so much. The melee just makes the world so dynamic and fun in a way that Open World games really haven't been.

Enslaved was just ok. If it weren't for the Quirky Story and excellent acting it would have been a profoundly mediocre game.

Feb. 2013

Acquired

  • nothing

Beat

  • Final Fantasy Xiii-2
  • Dead or Alive 2 : Hardcore
  • Mortal Kombat

Monthly Score +3

Total Score +5

FF 13-2 was like the polar opposite of 13. The combat and exploration was fun. Also had the greatest postgame in recent memory in the FF series. The Story was crap. Fortunately Serah and Noel were well so well acted it covered up most of the atrocious plot. Still I enjoyed it and got a platinum.

DOA 2: hardcore I beat at a Friends' I was visiting. That was unexpected. Hard to say how "good" it is since it's so old. But it didn't feel like a top tier fighting game.

Mortal Kombat is as amazing as advertised. It's the perfect fusion what worked in the old games (2d fighting) and the new (Story + huge number of kollectibles).

March 2013

Acquired

  • Far Cry 2
  • Left 4 Dead 2
  • CounterStrike: Source

Far Cry, L2D2 and Counterstrike I bought for an old school LAN party. I ended up liking FC2 more than I would have guessed. But after ten hours the single player bogged down and I haven't gone back to finish it. The other 2 I'm not big fans of. I don't like horror game much, even good ones. Counterstrike just isn't my thing.

Borderlands 2 I've been chewing at co-op with a buddy since October, we finally finished. Very fun game, I love the second wind mechanic makes death actually fun.

The Transformers games were a real treat for me as a hardcore Transformers fan. They still aren't close to what I'd consider the perfect Transformers game. But they are a lot closer than I'd ever thought I see. I'm grateful for that.

Getting a DOTA 2 key was a poor decision for my backlog. The old Dota mod has sucked me in before in years past and this was like playing a better version of that. Naturally I also got keys for my old team. Instant Readdiction for all of us, this will likely be a problem for the forseeable future for the backlog.

GTA IV was bought for another LAN party. I'll get around to playing it, but I'd rather play it on console, or maybe I'll see if I use Steam Big Picture to do so on my TV.

Heavy Rain was a simply engrossing experience. It felt like one of those game changing type games and I loved teh story adn characters. It and DOTA 2 ate up my month. I ended up getting a platinum in Heavy Rain.

DOTA 2 continues to eat up my gaming time. I did manage to beat RDR off my backlog. What a fantastic game and well deserving of the accolades. If Sleeping Dogs has the best melee of this generation and Dragon's Dogma the best boss fights, Red Dead Redemption has the best story and world.

Wow so I made it into positive territory at +5, I'm kinda amazed and proud of myself as I'm teraing through games I've had for some time. And figure that won't last much longer since I feel the new game itch coming on. If it weren't for Steam Sale games I largely bought to play with friends I might be in the double digits.

I my finally on the upswing, maybe I'll make it to being at a net positive.

My Top games of the Month

  1. No More Heroes : All im gonna say is Wow...that ending, so many reveals
  2. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon: All games should have a Kill Star, that last half hour was so damn cool.
  3. Alan Wake: Everything except Episode 6's combat heavy sequences were awesome, well maybe not the driving.
  4. LA Noir: Setting and most of the cases were interesting, weakest parts were Homicide and Coles disgrace
  5. Lolipop Chainsaw: This game was just wacky fun, the combo system wasn't that deep but good enough.

Steam got its hooks into me with trading cards...that got me back into TF2 (which is staill fantastic) and Counter Strike GO. I should also get on to those RPGesqe games that are piling up: Ni No Kuni, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Skyrim, Reckoning, Dark Souls, Torchlight 2. I also seem to have alot of "Horror" and "click and point" games piling up.

Anyone else do some gaming this month? Make some progress to a net positive?

Strangely enough, I was thinking about something like that 2-3 minutes ago to be able to finish my backlog. So I guess I'll jump in for fun. Here's my list since january (thanks to email receipt and not my memory):

January 2013

Bought (-6)

  • DmC Devil May Cry
  • ACE COMBAT ASSAULT HORIZON DLC PACK
  • Hydrophobia: Prophecy
  • Sound Shapes™ PS Vita
  • Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch™
  • Little Inferno

Beaten (+2)

  • DmC Devil May Cry
  • Little Inferno

Buying spree but not much playing. Except DMC that I was able to finish, yay me.

February 2013

Bought (-1)

  • The Room

Beaten (+1)

  • The Room

Almost no gaming was done. Main reason is that I changed city / job so beside watching a lot of Dexter and 24, I did not do much beside getting nervous and stuff.

March 2013

Bought (-4)

  • SimCity 4 Deluxe
  • The Darkness
  • El Shaddai
  • Rayman Jungle Run

Beaten (+2)

  • Bayonnetta
  • Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm

I was able to beat two old game I had. Bayonetta was fun to finish. Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm was a pain in the ass because I just wanted to finish it to play Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 afterward. I also bought game that were interesting and pretty cheap at the time.

Beaten (+1)

  • Guild War 2

Mostly played Dragon Dogma and GW2. Since GW2 is not a game you can't finish really... well, now that I think about it I did finish the main story of my character for the first time (beaten final boss)... so I guess I could put it in beaten? (let me know if you think I should remove it). Oh and the end was great with my guild. In fact, dancing and listening to the GW 2 soundtrack in the last mission with guild mate was more fun than beating the dragon itself.

  • The last of us
  • Tomb Raider

Beaten (+8)

  • Limbo
  • Vanquish
  • Okami HD
  • Far Cry 3
  • Alice Madness Return
  • Ghost Recon Futur Soldier
  • The last of us
  • Tomb Raider

Had to buy Last of us and there was a sale on Tomb Raider that came with Quantum Conundrum

Much of those game were almost done at the time. Like Okami for example, I was 5-6 hour away from the end. Alice it turns out I was at the last boss fight.

Limbo was ok but nothing stood out for me.

Vanquish was good, dunno why I did not like it at first, maybe the start is a little slow but where I started it was nice.

Okami was a good game, really liked the story even though it's a little too long.

Far Cry 3 good character but the story could have been better. Took some time to get used to the sneaking and chaining combo stuff.

Alice Madness Return... well, I was at the end of the game so I did not remember much of the game at all. The end boss was kinda lame. Hopefully there's memory so I could track back what happened,

Ghost Recon: Played with a friend. Overall it was good but I would have liked more diversity in the gameplay, all the mission looked pretty much the same.

The last of us: Great game. Since it's pretty recent I won't say anything else.

Tomb Raider: Really like it. The thing I liked the most stupidly enough was the way Lara hold her handgun when it was drawn. Like when she sneak or in battle, two hands on the grip and a little to her right, anyway I dunno why but it's the first time that I notice how a character hold a gun in game and find it pretty cool. :D

@believer258: Yup. Playing through some oldies for my bucket list. The Metroids were amazing, they exceeded all of my expectations. I played those back to back with Super Metroid for the first time and I only wanted more when I was done, unfortunately I'm out of 2d ones now unless I find a way to play Metroid 2. As for Crash Bandicoot I was a little disappointed, I replayed Crash 2 pretty recently and I thought it held up better. The airplane, underwater, and racing levels took a little too much of the focus away from the platforming, and it led to fewer "real" levels in my mind, which sort of rubbed me the wrong way.

Well i lost all my momentum, thanks E3.

In reality I've been playing alot of games...just not finishing them. I got to act 3 in Diablo 3, I'm almost to the bottom in SHoDN, Almost done with Mark of the Ninja and Dust: An Elysian Tail and I re-bought Borderlands 2 because it was cheaper to get the dlc that way.

My problem is i buy games i have no interest in playing right now (ex. Assassins Creed 3), most of my backlog is now games i dont exactly want to play like Point and Click Adventure games and Indie Platformers but will probably be fun when the time is right. I should really keep it in mind when the apocalypse Steam Summer Sale is upon us.

Pretty close to zero! Doubt I'll buy much game in July but who know. Trying to finish Human revolution at the moment. I'm at the moment where I find the doctor after traveling in a boat from shenghai so dunno how long I am from the end. It's getting pretty tedious because I have less and less interest in the game. Dunno if it's because of the story or the character. Nonetheless, I'll finish the game this month for sure.

Anyway, that's it!

Man fuck Steam sales.....I'm just so defenseless against them. Luckily they didnt have publisher packs this year or the damage would of been too catastrophic. But i finally managed to finish Ni No Kuni which grew on me late game...just wish it had a gambit system cause that party AI is atrocious. Also if you liked Yu-Gi-Oh than that Decade Duels game is alright, and by alright i mean fucking terrible but its the only game out there for this gen and i wanted to play some Yu-Gi-OH. Opponent AI Decks are way too good compared to what they give you in the beginning, but i still find it amusing when you built your own op deck. Kuriboh is shit and will always be shit.

As for next month im gonna try to finish Assassins Creed 3, just got my boat and it makes me really excited for 4......boats single handedly made me want to continue; also that twist at the beginning was unexpected and cool. The rest of the time im just gonna try and finish the ton of small indie games i have, they should go fast and eat away at most of my backlog.

What is the policy on borrowing games? Im counting it as a buy, because otherwise it seems like kind of an unfair loophole. I didn't actually buy anything since Tomb Raider cause I lost my job (but now I have it back, so hopefully I will stop doing so well because I feel bad that I'm thrashing all of you.)

Wasnt able to do this last month, my father was in the hospital off and on in September and the worst came to be on October 1st. It was a hard month but im finally moving on, thanks to my friends and thanks to the humorous videos the giantbomb crew puts out, which even if for a few hours allowed me to laugh and escape my depressing thoughts.

I finally bought a Vita this month.....I wanted the OLED and the ps4 remote play was very enticing. Overall i love it...I mostly take it to work to play during my lunch break and use it a bit before i go to bed.

I also Played through most of the Mass Effect series for the first time. I could not get into ME1 so i skipped to ME2, I fell in love with ME2 during the first loyalty mission. Mass Effect 2 is truely something amazing, then i went and played ME3. There are some amazing moment during that game, like the missions with Sheppard's previous crew, but the last assualt and ending are terrible. Choosing the Geth and damning the Quarians was one of the best story moments in a game i ever had, even though if i would of done the side mission before that i would of saved both.

Also played through Dead Nation Co-OP with a friend and it has become one of my favorite co-op games, just destroying zombies with a blade cannon is satisfying. Finally beat Dark Souls, mostly in part of Vinny's Load our last Souls....It was really good and look forward to playing something other than a Dex Build. Tried Meto 2033 but the "stealth" mechanics and the mission Frontline made me toss that out the fucking window, but i moved on to Metro Last Light and enjoyed it quite a bit.

Now I know what most of the staff feels like when Drew brings up sports on the podcast.
