Hey guys:

Recently, my girlfriend decided to take a shot at playing video games with me, and so far, we've been having a great time playing co-op games. Now that Halloween's coming, we've been thinking about playing some horror/scary videogames.

What are some good horror games that can be engaging for both of us, even if they're only single player? What are the best in your opinion? Many games of this genre are on sale right now, so it'd be a good time to pick one up.

Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated!

Cheers,

I'm too much of a scaredy cat to have played many horror games, but I gotta recommend Until Dawn.

Also, any specific systems?

I can second Until Dawn and although I haven't played it I suspect Man of Medan is similarly suited.

I didn't intend it as a shared playthrough but my partner really enjoyed watching me go through the Last of Us because of how story heavy it is.

Edit: Oh and Soma! Again singleplayer but that game has a really compelling story and central mystery that even a passive viewer might enjoy it. Nice and spooky too.

Yeah, Until Dawn is the best possible pick, since it's so film like and can easily be played like a co-op game by swapping agency over choices.

Another good one is Dead By Daylight. Results may vary, it's not everybody's cuppa, but it's fun to watch and/or swap controllers between matches, and despite being an online multiplayer game, can absolutely provide some fun scares at times. Just set your profile to private before playing unless you like salt, because the community is crazy toxic.

Friday the 13th is a goodie in a similar vein (and has SP content), but expect heavy jank and even more toxicity.

  • The Walking Dead: Season One
  • Resident Evil 2 Remake (just because more people should play it)
  • Resident Evil 5 (co-op)
  • Left 4 Dead
  • Dead Space

Man of Medan has a 2-player mode built into it, right? Seems like that would be your best bet.

This might be a bit old but the Penumbra series is built to be played with two players and there are a few of them to Play through.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

We finally decided to go with Telltale's The Walking Dead and Outlast 1. We'll see how it all goes.

Many thanks!

I know you settled on your titles already jrodrz, but I have additional suggestions if you find yourself in need:

Alan Wake - interesting writing at least
Alien: Isolation - familiar terror, sci fi
Amnesia: Dark Descent - heart pumping fright, running for your damn life
Bioshock 1 - the ambiance is too good early on (action heavy later)
Dead Island - loads of fun with someone (action as well but who doesn't like killin zombies)
Heavy Rain - psychological thriller - uncover a mystery seek out out a Jigsaw style murderer
Observer - cyber-punk, slower paced but psychological in nature

Heartily recommend Amnesia and Dead Island for a cleanse afterward. But all are at least very good games.

Let's keep the train a'runnin'!

Man of Medan/Until Dawn have both been highlights for me and my partner.

Return of the Obra Dinn, if one of you is super into notetaking while the other controls the game. Still a great time together without that.

Undertale as well, isn't exactly a horror game, but it's very spooky and weird.

Do you have a Switch? The new Luigi's Mansion should be pretty good for that?
