I been playing DR4 and was thinking what are some of the best malls in games? I always found them to be interesting for a design stand point alot of detail and items have to be placed in them so what ones stand out the most for you?
Best malls in video gaming
I'm fond of Zakera Ward from Mass Effect 2 (hope that qualifies). I always like to walk around in games and listen to the idle chatter of merchants hawking.
Oh and this is more of a bazaar, but Bledavik in Xenogears has some neat stalls and a carnival at the end of the row!
That Mario Kart Wii map stands out in my memory for some reason.
I second this. Coconut Mall is great, and the theme is super catchy.
Huh. I thought about vidya game malls just a couple of days ago while playing NieR.
I will always remember Vice City's. I think it has especially nightmarish muzak.
This was also the first example that popped to my mind, even though it must be at least 10 years since I last played Vice City for more than a quick nostalgia trip and visited the mall. Left Behind's mall is another one.
Checkout from Gears of War 3!
The mall from Silent Hill 3 does stand out to me, even though I didn't really like or finish that game.
No love for the opening level in 2002 classic State of Emergency? It was even criticised by the state of Washington due to perceived similarities with 1999 Seattle riots!
I also enjoyed Fallon's department store in Fallout 4 and the unfortunate radio broadcast of the lady trapped in the jewellery safe.
I think just about all the Persona games have had great malls. I really liked the one in Vice City (and Vice City Stories) too.
Duke Nukem 3D had some great user maps with malls too, but none of the official levels as far as I can remember.
Ubisoft's Zombi from 1990 had a pretty well designed mall too.
The Last of Us: Left Behind stands out to me, even though the mall in that game is years past being operational.
Ah that's my real answer.
The Fort Lucenne Mall from Night in the Woods is pretty good because you can shoplift from the Hot Topic.

I came here to back State of Emergency!
I would go with the one in Silent Hill 3. It establishes the tone of the game by starting with a nightmare. I like how sound design was used to create the illusion that the mall is full of people when Heather wakes up in the burger place and encounters Douglas.
