Can I install windows from a USB HDD?
Which version of windows are we talking about?
If it's Windows 7 then here is a tool from Microsoft. http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool
A similar tool is built into the Windows 8 download.
@michaeldim 7. 777777. But even that says it is for a USB flash drive... I guess the dream is dead.
Edit: Well, apparently the drive needs to be completely blank anywho, which just won't fly for the 500 gigs of snuff films and porn I have on the HDD. Thanks anyways. Thread, delete!
@killacam: I don't see why you would need a flash drive. The tool just makes you format the drive you use. As long as it is a bootable drive you should be able to use it from what I understand.

hmm.. you know, I think you're right. Upon the deepest of investigations you can even use ipods and such. Guess I'll use my ps3 backup drive.. Thanks!

You need a clean partition but you could partition an existing drive that has stuff on it. So long as your motherboard bios lets you boot from usb (anything under 5 years old should) then you can install to it. Going to be a slow bottleneck in any system though.
not trying to run it off the external hdd, just trying to install the ISO frommm there, to an SSD. the contrast in speeds will blow minds.
