Oh yeah, dead as fuck. Just like turn-based games, strategy games, isometric RPGs, roguelikes, and adventure games.

Brawlers became hack and slashes or whatever the hell genre Diablo pioneered.

I don't think they're dead, but developers don't seem to have a great grasp anymore on what made them so fun.
