By this time of the year, with finals closing up and actually having time to turn on my Xbox for more than 30 minutes, I decided to catch up on my gaming.

The problem of course, is I'm short on cash even with working two jobs, and can only afford one game at the moment, so I ask you to recommend some of your favourites and spectacular games of the year. I've already played Gears 3, Arkham City, Battlefield and managed to squeeze in LOTR: War in the North. I'm currently deciding between Goldeneye, Saints Row, and Deus Ex.

Anything else I should pick up or what should I choose out of the three?

If you never played borderlands it's on download for 20 bucks. I only suggest this cause you said you were poor I know it's an old game this point.

If the games pique your interest, go get the Humble Indie Bundle #4. It has Super Meat Boy, Bit Trip Runner, Jamestown, Cave Story +, Shank, Gratuitous Space Battles and Night Sky. All great games, you set the price and all of the money goes to whoever you want! If not than, ya, Skyrim or Saints Row.

Goldeneye, because I played that on the Wii and it was pretty cool. It's eerie how dissimilar yet exactly the same it is in regards to the N64 original.

Of the three you've mentioned I'd say Deus Ex as I seriously enjoyed it. Skyrim definitely represents the best game to coin ratio possible and is stupidly good.

Why didn't you get in on some of those black friday deals? You know you don't have to spend $60 on a game if you look hard enough?

Deus Ex pretty good and also dirt cheap now. I picked it up for 10 euros.

@DeF: I'm Canadian eh :P

@Lenny: I'm holding off on Skyrim because I'm pretty sure my GF got it for me. Deus Ex sounds like a good deal

@nick_verissimo: Thanks for the heads up!

@CptBedlam: @Ramone: What offers more play time? Saints Row or Deus Ex? Are the developers still supporting the games via DLC?

Agree completely. Picked it up for £10 + free delivery. Best £10 I've spent all year.

Saint's Row 3 is probably great but I found the SR2 lacked depth. Spraying shit on houses is hilarious but once it stops being funny, it stops being enjoyable. I have a feeling it would be great with another person so if you have someone to play it with then get that instead/as well.

SpaceChem isn't on your list but it's my game of the year. £7 on Steam. No idea what it costs in dollars.

that's no excuse. I'm from Germany and we were pretty much drowned in sales and cyber mondays and whatnot over here as well :)

if you don't mind waiting a bit, you can get Deus Ex for the equivalent of 20 canada moneys from the UK here (the game appears to be region free, according to my research)

@DeF: Lucky for you in Germany! In the part of Canada where I live, we literally had no good sales on video games, but on every other piece of technology.

From the look of the games you played before I would probably go with Golden Eye or Saints Row 3, Deus Ex may be a bit slow moving for your taste. While Deus Ex is a good game it's just not action packed.

Some other games to mention...the holiday humble bundle is a good mix of indie games for cheap (plus it funds charities), Dark Souls (I'll be playing this one this X-mas), and Skyrim.

Saints row probably. From a purely "I'm low on cash" standpoint Deus Ex and Goldeneye will both likely get super cheap during holiday sales and you can probably pick them up then, Saint's row is slightly newer and perhaps a tad more popular so I don't see it dropping in price as quickly as the others

Oh man. Talk about a question that there's no answer to...

Skyrim and Saints Row 3 will probably the most frequent recommendations...but you've probably been there and done that. Yeah, these are better versions, but not so much different that it would kill you to miss them - if you've played Oblivion or SR2 you pretty much know what you're gonna get.

Deus Ex is the "don't miss" on your "considering" list, but I would say the absolute must not miss games of this year are Dark Souls and Portal 2. Unless you played their earlier iterations and didn't like them, but they definitely don't fall under the "if you played their previous entries you know what you are gonna get" category. They're too good to miss.

Saints Row is amazing and if you are the type of person who likes absurd sandboxes then you can spend a great deal of time doing that.

Deus Ex, easily. Unless you don't like RPGs. In that case probably SR3

My best advice, if you are playing Goldeneye on classic mode, stop. Complete POS.

@plaintomato: @KillyDarko: Well to be honest, I just only recently started getting into RPG's with Mass Effect 1 and 2, and then continuing onto LOTR: War in the North. I've lately grown sick of multiplayer and lately, I've desired just to take games at my own pace. I've heard excellent things from Deus Ex.

@TheDudeOfGaming: Haha! Sorry to disappoint mate! :P

Skyrim is the everlasting gobstopper of videogames. Acquire it.
