Single player - Half-Life 2

Multiplayer - Battlefield 2

now which matters more when you say "FPS" - single or multi player?

just because developers have been milking their franchises, feeding off our social needs, doesn't mean multiplayer is it.
FPS is mainly an amazing single player experience

so HL2

Edit: personally i think Crysis 1 is the greatest FPS ever made. but HL2 is more of a giant.
Also, i wish i could say i believe in BF3, but we've reached an irreversible point of mandatory shitty quality directed at all those fucking 15 year olds on their Xbox

Unreal Tournament 2004, oh how I miss your Onslaught mode. The greatest multiplayer mode in the history of FPSs.

I went with L4D2 mainly because the versus mode is by far the most fun i have had with a first person shooter this generation.

Would have chosen Battlefield 2 but because it doesn't have a SP per say I had to give it to COD4. Otherwise BF2 all the way.

I'd have to say Modern Warfare. I can't really bring to mind anything that has come after it that hit with the same widespread fervor while simultaneously giving us something that felt that fresh (the leveling and upgraded equipment mechanic).

Singleplayer it has to be Half Life 2 for me. Just such a huge step forward in FPS storytelling and what it brought to the table. Just wish they didn't shove the physics engine in my face every 10 seconds.
For multiplayer Battlefield games.
This is of course my opinion.

Dude opinions are like assholes, everyones got them.
In my opinion Modern Warfare 2 was terrible in comparison to COD4, backwards step in terms of online (killstreaks) and the direction they took the story. MW2 was only giant because of COD4's success.

People choose what they want, your opinion isn't 'true'.

Black Ops, even though most people here hate the game it sold shitloads and is wildly popular online. I would define that as "Giant".

Call of Duty Modern Warfare (1).  That's the one that pretty much killed my affinity for the genre.  I still play a whole lot of FPS shooters, but none excite me as much as that one did at the time.

Well Black Ops is definitely a juggernaut, but the last game I enjoyed hours upon hours was Halo 3. Ever since Halo 3 me and my friends can never play the same game for a whole weekend.

Halo and COD 4.

CoD 4 set the bar for Modern FPS games. The changes and improvements that game made are unreal and you see a little bit of COD 4 in every modern FPS out there.

Modern Warfare 2 was the last giant due to its ridiculously large and satisfied playerbase (myself less included.) More people feel how I did about Modern Warfare 2 with Black Ops, which is weird because I rather like Black Ops.

Last game to redefine the genre? Modern Warfare.

CoD 4 for me. The game changed so much in the FPS genre that it will be pretty hard to beat in the future.

Call of Duty 4 has a special place in my heart. I'm a bigger fanboy to other series but I can see how this game has changed gaming as a whole. That's pretty giant to me.

Cod 4 was the last game changer. Look how many knockoffs have sprung up since then, every game wants to have a perk / unlock system and persistant XP.

I think Halo Reach was the most recent A+ entry. Such a good game.

I think there are to many generations of games there for me to pick one. I would say it's Goldeneye then either Halo 2 or Battlefield 2.

Why do you have FPS/RPGs in there? Your vote suggests competitive. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding the question. I'm really sick so that is possible.

Anyway, the last FPS I played a fair amount of was counter strike. I fell out of gaming for several years after that (somewhere around 2005) and have not found any FPS online community to play with since. So I haven't really played much online as far as FPS goes. I played Black Ops for a little while, which was ok- but im really not big on FPS on consoles still and my computer cant handle the most modern games.

So, I haven't been into multiplayer FPS' in a very long time.

BF2 it come out in 2005, it started the ranks and weapon unlock system, It has 64 player support with huge maps great teamwork, variety in gameplay from vehicles land air and water. Also commanders in the game played a pretty big role in helping your team from sending out uav's, to supplydrops ect..As for MP IMO its still the king.

CoD 4 was the last one that really changed anything.

The next big step will probably be when somebody figures out MMOFPS.

Modern Warfare 2 was probably the genre's swan song. Because after that, all the other FPSs became really repetitive and boring

CoD 4 is definitely the most recent game to pretty much take over the genre, so it has to be the correct answer, no?  People seem to be commenting on what they think is the best, but I don't think that's what the question is asking.

Modern Warfare defined modern shooters.
Halo: CE before it.

Before that.. I dunno. Quake?

edit: actually, just because it's awesome: Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Best free FPS ever. (Quake wasn't always free.. that doesn't count)

But there are other games there that are Giants as well.

Modern Warfare for establishing multiplayer++ and also for making "semi-gameplay implemented cinematic situations" popular, which spread like the flue.
