My personal pick for GOTY 2007 (and just about everyone elses) was Super Mario Galaxy. I was kind of surprised when Jeff and Ryan gave it to CoD4. First and foremost it was a shooter with no co op and the single player didn't have much room to run around in. Oh and the multiplayer sucked for people who werent super good at it. This year, however, I would definitely give the GOTY to MW 2. Spec Ops is the most amazing co op experience ever and the single player gives you plenty of room to take many positions and maneuvers. The multiplayer was pretty sweet to with the riot shield. You can get points and help out your team mates by getting shot at, and it allows you to survive long enough to get a hang of the game. I also think the level designs were much better. I had many levels memorized without having to traverse through the whole thing. All that being said, if Giantbomb gives it to MW 2 they are just going to seem like all they care about is big name shooter titles. Which is not that bad I guess because thats what is mostly the games that I care about. But I am wondering if their 2007 GOTY decision is effecting their 2009 decision.
Is Giantbomb kicking themselves for giving the GOTY 2007 to CoD4
Super Mario Galaxy is an acceptable GotY if you live in your mom's basement or are under the age of twelve.
Wow. Presumptuous much?" My personal pick for GOTY 2007 (and just about everyone elses) was Super Mario Galaxy."
I dunno why we're talking about two years ago, but my GotY 2007 was Bioshock. Call of Duty 4 was exquisite, though.
Also, I feel these two are worth quotes as well:

I don't think they take into account past GOTY winners when picking new ones. If they think MW2 deserves it this year the fact that COD4 won in 2007 shouldn't stop them from giving it the nod.
" I dunno but MW2 doesn't deserve GOTY 2009. "This, Imo Batman deserves it, or uncharted 2

Two things:
- It's opinion. In my opinion, Shadow of the Colossus is the best game ever, and most first party Nintendo games are in dire need of better saving systems. Oh yeah, and that Call of Duty 4 is better than Super Mario Galaxy
- The award was for 2008's 2007 game of the year. It wasn't for 2007's game of the year, but for what 2007 game they enjoyed and played most in 2008. That was most definitely CoD4.
I don't think previous GOTY awards for previous installments in a series effect their thinking on who should get this years GOTY award. Just because a previous installment in a series was good enough to get it doesn't mean the current installment that is up for the award is. I also don't think this years GOTY award should go to MW2, but I know most sites are going to hand it over on a silver platter.
No 2007 was a great year for video game and Super Mario Galaxy wasn't THE favourite." My personal pick for GOTY 2007 (and just about everyone elses) was Super Mario Galaxy
Bioshock, Uncharted, COD 4, Mass Effect, Orange Box, Assassin's Creed, Halo 3 and much more came out this year.
There was a lot of contender but my personal favourite was also COD 4 but this year it is Arkhum Asylum, even if MW2 is a refined version of my 2007 GOTY, it doesnt mean i HAVE to pick it for my GOTY 2009. And its not because you suck at a game that you can tell people that they shouldnt pick that game as their favourite.
" My personal pick for GOTY 2007 (and just about everyone elses) was Super Mario Galaxy. You are getting this information from....where?
Mario didnt really do anything for the platforming genre other then add gravity as a factor. It was a great mario game, but by no means was it better than most other titles released that year., COD4, did a ton to make shooters how they are today. Unlocks, deeper stories, great visuals.
I loved Super Mario Galaxy and CoD4, but I don't think either of them deserved GOTY in '07 (my choice was definitely Mass Effect). I haven't played MW2 so I can't really make a judgement on that, but simply based on what I've seen, I wouldn't choose it for GOTY '09. My choice would probably be Batman: Arkham Asylum (or Borderlands or Dragon Age: Origins).

I think that that award was 2008's 2007 GOTY which is basically what game kept them coming back in 2008, not the best game of 2007.
So ok, what I can't figure out, is why the hell does it matter?
Personally, my 2009 game of the year would have to be Uncharted 2. But I'm not gonna flip out about Giantbomb being sellouts if they go and give the award to Modern Warfare 2. During last years Game of the Year podcast, they deliberated back and forth between Grand Theft Auto 4 and Metal Gear Solid 4. They ended up giving the award to GTA because they jsut simply had more fun playing it as a game.
Obviously, if you're not having fun at a Big-Name game (MW2!) then you won't like it. Jeff, Ryan, Vinny, and Brad are by far the four most honest gaming journalists that I've ever come across. They aren't going to not give out an award because they think it might harm their reputation. They are going to give out the best awards to the games that they think are most deserving.
Also, and this is just a sidenote.... Super Mario Galaxy was not 2007's GOTY, that award goes to Bioshock in my book.
I think the deal with 200x's game of 200y is that they give it to a previous year release that had a lot of impact on them this year. Jeff was unemployed in early 08, and he played a ton of CoD4.
Also, also, also....Sunshine is better than Galaxy and Bioshock was 07's best.
I think CoD4 did deserve it more than MW2 does this year. There were a ton of great...lemme repeat that...GREAT games this year that did something really cool. Modern Warfare 2's spec ops is great, but doesn't last long, the singleplayer is short and chaotic, and the multiplayer has that "done before but better than last year" madden feel. I think there are just too many great games this year to have MW2 win overall. I think the game is great, but my credit is going out to what really deserves it this year:
Dragon Age
Batman
Borderlands
Erm, not a lot of people picked SMG as '07.
From my memory most places gave it to Bioshock... which was in my opinion a better game, not as good as The Orange Box, but nonetheless the second best game of '07
It is cool to hate on Call of Duty (including Modern Warfare 2) so it won't win since all the fanboys would go insane. Gamers are a weird bunch, they are always finding new ways to stand out from the crowd like their opinion even matters. Why do you think so many people like Demon's Souls. It is just their way of supporting the underdog, even if the game is Demon's trash.
" @ajr123 said:How so? I am neither." Super Mario Galaxy is an acceptable GotY if you live in your mom's basement or are under the age of twelve. "Irony. "
Yeah kindof a stupid thing to assume everyone felt Mario Galaxy was the game of the year. I played it, and it's not necessarily goty material. It's about as fun as super mario sunshine, which I liked, but I wouldn't call it the best game in a year with <insert '07's beasts here>.
" @Icemael said:Because the opinion you expressed is the sort that would be spouted by a basement-dwelling twelve-year-old that lives to annoy people by screeching his prepubescent voice through a headset while playing Modern Warfare over XBL." @ajr123 said:How so?
