New (Sort of) Moderator: Welcome Back BoG

Just a quick note - BoG is back on as a moderator. He was gone for a couple of years on personal business without access to his account, so we temporarily revoked his moderator status mostly as a security precaution. For those of you who don't remember or weren't around, BoG was one of the original day one moderators way back at launch.

We're all happy to have him back!

(side note, we are in the process of selecting some additional moderator(s) and will have something to announce soon)

So mods can unmod other mods? Why hasn't one mod just taken to unmodding everybody and taking all the mod power for themselves? The staff? Can the staff be unmodded? Or is that the ace in the hole?

The Staff are the ones who "mod" and "unmod" users. We can't do it to each other, just like how we can't ban each other (no matter how hard Sweep tries).

Dude, BoG! I remember BoG being on the Minor Issues podcast (I Think) and announcing his mission! I think that's right, at least.

Luckily there is a giant ocean and continent between the Sweep and the Whiskey Media offices.

We don't discuss new mods until we make official announcements.

Wow. Day one moderator? That's some serious shit. He's practically one of the staff at that point! Don't know the guy personally, but if all mods everywhere were as cool as him, the internet probably wouldn't be World War E.

But we can ban each other. It's just pretty pointless. Me and ZP learned that the hard way. He banned me, then I banned him because he banned me(or maybe it was the other way round, I don't remember), and we were both rendered pretty unable to post until a few minutes later we formed a truce and agreed to unban each other. It was a totally pointless exercise.

Either way, it's great to have BoG on-board, and soon we should have one or two truly new guys on too (Sweep will be ecstatic, he won't be the newest mod any more).

I'm assuming it was just a discussion amongst yourselves as to who would be best suitable?

Oh, cool! Someone from the beginning that I missed out on because I had no idea how to use the Internet in those days... :(

@NekuSakuraba: Every single mod we've appointed has been as a result of internal discussions between the mods. We just discuss who we think would make a good moderator, their pros and cons and come to a conclusion. There is no rigid structure to our discussions, we just throw names into the hat and discuss them. The staff often throw their opinions into the hat and we just generally have a big discussion about who would make the best moderators. We did ask for suggestions from the community one time but ultimately it was up us to decide who to bring onboard.

There was a time long, long ago when MB and myself banned each other on a daily basis for the lulz but back then we could unban ourselves at the same time.

Good to see a familiar face return to our ranks :)

That isn't the entire picture. Users punted names and the previous mods thought about them but wielded the final say. Most of the users the community nominated were not infact made mods. Also mracoon and I were not in fact the front runners for that drive.

Some of the moderators have other responsibilities behind the scenes that may not be totally obvious, but they are important nonetheless.

While staff are of course free to do whatever they want, they have always left it up to us as a group what we want to do, how we want to handle things overall, how many moderators are needed at any given time and which users are ultimately selected to join us. I mean hell, Hamz, CK, BoG, and myself literally wrote the forum & wiki rules, largely from scratch. That's how far back BoG goes. So yeah, we've all been doing this a long time and are left to use our collective judgment on how best to handle things.

Anyway, each appointment is always a group decision, and we have never brought anyone on board when there was any kind of real objection. We're always open to suggestions, though.

@MB: When do you reckon the new mod will be announced?
