I'm looking at buying this kit. Any opinions on it? Seems like a bitchin' deal to me, but I've been out of the computer hardware game for a long time so if anyone who's knowledgable wants to weigh in i'd really appreciate it!

Seems like a pretty slick deal, I can't get close to the same price on cyberpowerpc.com, which is normally cheaper than parts.  Most games put more emphasis on the GPU than the CPU, so your base parts should be okay for a couple years.  Don't forget that you'll still need to buy an OS license for an extra $200 though.  Also, doesn't look like it ships with an optical drive, so you'll need to pick one of those up as well.

My other concern is I'm not sure how well the QX9650 stacks up against more modern processors like the i5/i7 as they have DDR3.  This PC might wind up being faster for slightly less for example:

@FrequentBeast: Ah crap, realizing that it was tigerdirect.ca you were looking at.  Not sure what the price difference would be or even if CyberPowerPC will ship to CA.  Disregard my post as I can't really do the cost comparison.

That's a terrible deal. The case, processor and graphics card are extremely overpriced. You could get something that is easily twice as good for less.

Which will give you about double performance or more of the build you originally posted, for less. If $1k is your budget you can switch out the 5850 for a 5870 (significantly stronger), as well as the Athlon II X3 for a Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition for about triple the performance of the original TigerDirect build.

Which is an extremely solid build that will play 90% of today's games at max settings 60fps.

Hey man thanks for doing this. The reason I was looking at the kits is because Ive never mounted a motherboard on a case or installed a processor,  which I've heard can be tricky which makes me a little nervous.

That looks really bitchin' for a thousand bucks though... I guess i need to learn :P

No problem. I can understand where the nervousness comes from, you don't want to mess up expensive parts etc. but it's really not that hard and the results are worth it. There's a huge amount of resources online that show you how to build a PC step by step, and each individual component comes with a manual showing you how as well. Just don't force anything, make sure there's no static sources in the environment (usually not a problem), read the instructions, and it's very hard to mess up.

I remember the first computer I bought and assembled myself. Seven years ago, I was 16 and thought I was a right hardware wiz. So when the parts arrived I ignored my father's advice that I wait for him to come home from work, ran down to the basement (where my room was) and quickly and hastily put everything together. When I proceeded to plug the computer in and turn it on, all I was met with was a continuous shriek from the PC speaker. Horrified, I looked through the motherboard manual and learned that the shriek actually was a code for "CPU error".

At this point I was panicking, sweating and shaking, but I managed to open the computer up again, removed the fan and realized... the CPU was stuck. I could not for the life of me get it out of its slot. Now, my father was coming home from work in about an hour so I really needed to fix this soon if I didn't want to catch shit from him. I got a kitchen knife and pried the CPU out... the force required to pry it out made me realize something was terribly wrong and this build was not likely to ever run again. Confirming my fears, the CPU looked horrible. Every single pin (and there was a lot of them) was completely bent in an almost 90 degree angle.

It seems I had forgotten to raise a little plastic arm for locking the CPU in place next to the slot before I inserted it, so when I mounted the fan, it had pushed the CPU down and basically crushed it.
My father (bless him) spent that following night bending up and straightening the pins and amazingly it actually worked and I used that computer for many years to come.

Just a little reminder for you to be extra careful while assembling your computer. :)

The problem isn't usually whether it will first on a motherboard, but whether it will fit in the case. 5850 should not be a problem but I've heard of some mid tower cases being too small for 5870. Since I don't have the build myself, I can't say for sure. But if you refer to this build  http://www.hardware-revolution.com/hardware-revolutions-850-gaming-build-version-2-0/ (the one he made and the one I provided you are very similar, but the one I recommended was wholly self-researched), you'll see that he recommends a 5870 on the same motherboard, and with a smaller case. If you are really concerned whether it will fit or not you can opt for the 5850 which will basically fit for sure, while switching out the Athlon II for the Phenom II I recommended for great game performance. Alternatively, you could option for the HAF 922 which is a large mid tower case at $100 and will almost for sure fit the 5870, or the Antec 1200 or HAF 932 which are full tower cases guaranteed to hold cards like the 5870. All of these come at extra cost though. What is your expected level of game performance? Knowing that would help additionally.

I'm thinking about building this thing piecemeal. Is the PCIE 2.0 x16 slot backwards compatable? I have an old geforce 6800 I want to drop in until I find a sale on a high end card/

So I went ahead and bought the mobo, processor, power sipply, and ram. Works awesome, but Goddamn I need a new vid card, I dont really have the cash now to buy an awesome card though.

I found a couple that look decent, opinions on these cards? the first one seems to be discounted pretty highly, the price seems right. What do you guys think of these two cards?
