A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of hacking attacks on Sony and the CIA website, British police said Tuesday.

The Metropolitan Police said the arrest took place following a joint operation by its Internet crimes unit and the FBI.

Police would not say if the suspect was tied to the Lulz Security hacking collective, which has claimed responsibility for recent high-profile attacks, but did confirm that a computer seized in the operation will be examined for Sony data.

Lulz had boasted of successfully hacking Sony in addition to subsequent attacks on the CIA web page and the U.S. Senate computer system. The hackers recently called for "war" on governments that control the Internet.

The teenager was arrested late Monday in the commuter town of Wickford, about 35 miles (55 kilometers) northeast of London, and taken to a central London police station for questioning, police said.

Officers are conducting forensic examinations on "a significant amount of material" found in the search of a home following the arrest.

Lulz has taken credit for hacking into Sony Corp. — where more than 100 million user accounts were compromised — and defacing the PBS website after the U.S. public television station aired a documentary seen as critical of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. The hackers also say they are responsible for attacks on the CIA website and the U.S. Senate computer system.

Most recently, Lulz said it had hacked into Britain's census data, obtaining the records of "every single citizen." Census officials said Tuesday they were investigating the claim.

I found this on Yahoo this morning while checking my email. Finally some justice is being served.

Lulzsec posted this on twitter "Seems the glorious leader of LulzSec got arrested, it's all over now... wait... we're all still here! Which poor bastard did they take down?" so it looks like it's probably someone low down in the organization. Either that or they're trying to cover up his involvement.

Also, that's pretty terrible reporting, Lulzsec never claimed they hacked the census, Channel 4 news are reporting that they have, but I doubt it's true. Lulzsec are denying it on twitter. The BBC's coverage of this whole thing is far better.

It's very fishy that they pick up ONE member of this organization and they know it's the leader.  It sounds good on paper though.

I dunno mate, sounds more like they're making a point that he's not even part of their organisation at all.

They will never admit that this was anyone to do with them, it'll make them look bad.

This is the guy that started trying to hack anonymous after he was apparently kicked out.

Lulzsec appeared shortly after that happened, so it's certainly plausible.

Personal information like the majority of stuff in the census is exempt from the freedom of information act. They release aggregated data (e.g. X number of people & X percent were married, X were single, X were divorced etc.) but they don't release the full census data until 100 years after the census because of the personal & private information.

The future of warfare is here. It kind of makes me feel I'm observing history in writing. If this will be remembered in the years to come, that is.

Freedom of information act only applys to the US. and you can only get census data after 75 years or so. because they figure every one on the census will be moved or dead.

Wish i knew the age group of these idiots. They act as small children, my faith in humanity is completely gone if the majority of them are over 25 years of age.

I know its wrong for me to stereotype these little fucks, but that is sort of how i invision them. Maybe even in a basement, almost pitch black with their monitor being their only light source.

Ever since the escalation in attacks, I've been following Lulzsec on twitter.  Now, the police claim they got the ringleader.  But the twitter feed has been acting strange, almost as if it was another person behind it.  And now, they kicked out two members of their group.  I don't know, but all this tells me that the police are right and Lulzsec is scrambling.

But then again.. Lol hacker war.

Oh well - less tweet spam now. Best watch out, they can't get us, so they're going after people they think might know us. Defend yourselves.

Clearly the UK police are so desperate to catch us that they've gone and arrested someone who is, at best, mildly associated with us. Lame.

Possibly in their late teens. Most likely 16-30 years old. 30 is a bit of a stretch, but well, you know. I guess that if they draw to much attention, and dount cough up the dough to divert it, via VPNs silence and such, they will get caught eventually.

I don't really care about hackers, but hacking a company, even if its Hitler in his Company Version is not quite the ideal way. Why? Because who gets trapped in the middle, us regular folks. With Anonymous revenge, kind of stupid revenge though, and in the end, users were the most affected ones.

I guess that hacking for yourself is legal, but distributing tools that allow piracy is edgy. I mean, I understand the whole freedom of speech, but I wouldn't mind if they decide to take down any site regarding "Home Bomb Making".
