All I know about MG is from listening to what those "internet folk" say. I don't know if I'll get it without that base knowledge. It seems that you will only get the references if you've played the previous ones.
I bought/played through resistance not long ago so I might get Resistance 2. I also wanted a two player game (I know Resistance has co-op) because my dad wanted to play some games with me.
Burnout Paradise, Battlefield Bad Company, and Ratchet & Clank are awesome, there's a ton of new games coming out in October/November too, like LBP, Dead Space and Fallout 3. EDIT: Also Heavenly Sword is well worth a rent.
