There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the greatest pure 2D platformer of all time is Yoshi's Island. If we want to simply include games that are two dimensional and include platforming elements, then I will include Symphony of the NIght, Sonic CD, and Braid as well, though I would really consider both a different genre. Other than that, all of the Mario games are par excellence, with Super Mario World being my second favorite, followed by the original, and then 3. I also love Mega Man 2 and 9, all of the Castlevania games, the Sonic games up to 3, and Ghouls n' Ghosts.
I think it's Wario Land 4 for me. Yoshi's Island and Braid are extremely close, though. I really wanna say Earthworm Jim honestly, but I'm gonna wait to see how the second one fares, that is, if I can ever obtain it (I'll probably crack to eBay one of these days...)
