Tomorrow is my 17th birthday and well the only plus on it is that I no longer have to drag my dad into the store in order to purchase a game. I was just curious of what was giantbomb's members first M rated game they bought by themselves? For me its going between mass effect 2 ps3, heavy rain, or dead rising 2 probably early next year!
Your first M rated game when you turned 17?
I've always been able to buy M rated games by myself, the ratings aren't taken super seriously where I live.
I was 15 when the ratings system for the BBFC came in in the UK and Resident Evil came out, which was rated 15. Nice.
Back before I was 18, nobody gave a shit about ratings. They do now, but obviously I no longer care.
I got the first Halo game for PC, when I was 7. I bought it with my own money (had to return it... TWICE, because one was broken, and the other had key scratchs, and the key that scratched it in the box)
Ive been playing 18 rated games since i was 5 years old. The first 18 rated game i bought was The Punisher.
I saw that avatar next to this post, and my initial reaction was "wtf? I didn't create that thread" before I realized that someone else had adopted plight of the communist robot.
Anyways, the first 18 rated game (UK ratings system) I bought myself was probably Bioshock.
There was no such thing as an M rated game when I has 17.
i don't think so anyway. That was 1993, for goodness' sake. There was no M rated anything.
Mine was Bioshock. It was the first 17+ game I bought when I was actually 17 and it was also the first time they ever asked me for ID ever and it still is.
Mind you, I bought my own copy of Unreal Tournament when I was 9 (I think). I'm 21 now if you want to get into context.
I was able to purchase M rated games when I was 14. It's not that strict here.
I don't remember what my first M-rated game was though.
I think that would be Vice City. I got it as a present for my 17th birthday. Not that it was my first M rated game by any means. I've been playing MK since I was about 6.
I've been able to play M rated games for years, and I don't turn 17 until next month. Basically, if it's just rated M for gore, my parents will let me play it.
I think the first one was Spartan: Total Warrior.
" I played the original GTA when I was about 11/12 .. Seriously, you are waiting until you're old enough to play an M rated game? Mormon? "if you read my post of "i no longer have to bring my dad into the store to buy a game" i have M rated games but this topic is about the first one you bought as a 17 year old.

I was able to play M games since I was a child and I turned out just fine. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go on a killing spree....
This right here, they don't really care in Norway :-\" I've always been able to buy M rated games by myself, the ratings aren't taken super seriously where I live. "
Carmageddon 2. I remember because it was a month before BC passed some dumb regulation making the game AO.
The game that basically necessitated the ESRB in the first place, the first Mortal Kombat when I was in like second grade. After that they started doing ratings, but they weren't E through M, there K-A ("kids and adults") which was basically an "E" rating...yet I think "M" has always been "M" though, not really sure.
You mean you didn't go to the local Blockbuster, grab the nearest M-rated game, and show it to your parents while covering the M with your thumb?
I don't remember, I been getting them since before I turned 17 but since that was March 2008 I'd say probably GTA 4.
I never had the problem of needing a parent to buy video games when I was younger. To be honest I don't remember at all what game I bought at 17.
The ESRB didn't exist until just after I was seventeen. Ratings on anything never impeded my consumption of them, however, because I didn't have ignorant parents who thought I should live in a world of nerf-soft things.

I think it may have been Max Payne 2. But that was a few years ago, I can't really remember that well now.
I never had any problem buying mature rated games before I was 17. Although, there was one time where I went and bought a used copy of MGS 2 and after the sale was finished the girl selling the game to me asked if I was under 17. I calmly replied "yes" and proceeded to walk out the store.
