In Half Life 2 during your very first playthrough, what did you do with the can?

I put the can in the trash, I don't even think I even considered I could throw it at the combine officer until like my 3rd playthrough.

I put it in the trash. On my 2nd and every subsequent playthrough, I threw it at the officer because fuck that guy.

Definitely just put it in the trash. Didn't even think about doing anything else with it.

Pretty sure I Kobe'd that can right in the trash like a responsible damn citizen, but it *has* been 14 years (fucking hell), so I can't say definitively. After that, it went in the Combine's face every time.

I assume I made a hard save and just did both, but STUCK with the can to face decision.

Threw it at his face of course. That was always a fun part at the start of HL2, throwing shit like suitcases and empty bottles at the combine and having them chase after you. You could get them stuck behind objects and other NPCs and watch them spaz out.

Man I must have spent several hours doing nothing but playing with the physics in the station and the playground, and throwing shit out the windows in the apartment buildings you get to later. That stuff was so crazy back then.

preeeetty sure I threw it in his jerk face, I distinctly remember my young mind filled with panic, thinking I'd be killed for my insolence. I also remember running around for a bit before getting beaned and then feeling relieved I wasn't dead. Pretty sure.

Unless I'm misremembering the officer is like a huge dick about it and makes a show of knocking it to the ground for you to pick up.

I actually wasn't paying attention to the combine at the time, didn't hear him say "pick up that can" and spent awhile running around trying to find an alternate path. Eventually I thought the solution was to throw the can at him from far enough away that i could juke past him and get through the gate.

Eh it's not the game though if a tutorial teaching me how to throw items popped up and said put this in the trash I would have without thinking of it but the situation they give you is this asshole is trying to boss you around and where's the fun in that.

My first time through, I believe I put it in the trash. I considered it an education, like the guy telling you about the water.

It's been many years since I first played it, but I'm certain I put it in the trash. I didn't even know you could throw it at the guard until they added achievements.

It was teaching you a mechanic, right in the very beginning. This guy won't move until you figure out that you can pick stuff up and you can do things with the items you pick up. It is a tutorial, just not a blatant one. Game design 101.

In the context of the story, though, I was stepping into an oppressive dystopia. If some sort of lawman, even one of the lowest rank, tells you to do something in an oppressive dystopia, you should probably do it unless you want to suffer severe punishment. That's just the sort of atmosphere the game was going for, that's what I got sucked into, and that's what I did. Besides, it's a first person shooter, I knew there would be plenty of opportunities for Combine slaughter in due time.

@justin258: Well yes I know that it's a tutorial. I mean when games are less contextual about them you are more likely to just simply follow instructions instead of doing the proper thing of throwing the can at a guards dumb face.

Definitely beaned a guard in the head with it. Repeatedly.
