They announced this full, FMV, reboot that would combine elements of Underground and Hot Pursuit way back at E3. It seemed pretty dumb and for a few months information trickled out. While I'll still see some stories listing out cars that'll be in the game and the game's setting. I don't spot much else.

Does anyone else feel like this game dropped below the radar? Is Fallout 4 and Just Cause 3 too powerful for Need For Speed to exist? Did I have a fever dream and simply create this FMV racing game in my head?

They just announced the car list.

And it features a 240z so I'm super hyped now. I hope I can play the whole game with that one car.

...they're rebooting Need for Speed?

I do keep forgetting that this series is still a thing with new entries.

I totally did. Right, this game. Man.

Here's hoping that FMV makes this one interesting.

This one actually looked pretty fun. Just the driving I mean.

I remember it had a pretty cool swingy camera that was relatively low to the ground. Seemed kinda intense, though maybe eventually a tad annoying.

I've been forgetting NFS since the 90s... why stop now?

F'real, though, I did totally forget. I'm curious to see how it turns out.

I don't know if they are treating it as a full reboot or not. But it's just called Need For Speed and looks generally different than previous entries so spiritually I would call it a reboot.

I never was a Need for Speed fan, but I'm mildly triggered by this one. Game looks incredible as well!

Might pick it up later on, because Fallout 4..

The reaction from the beta was pretty mixed, so I'll be curious to see how the full game turns out.

I don't know if they are treating it as a full reboot or not.

They are in fact treating it as a reboot. A quote from Marcus Nilsson, the game's Executive Producer:

Need for Speed is one of the most iconic names in gaming, and we’re returning it to greatness in this reboot

I got really excited during the reveal, but between just having played a ton of Forza 6 and with Halo 5, Fallout 4 and Just Cause 3 looming in the future I just don't think I'll have the time.

They had a closed beta that I was in, and that was a thing. I'm pretty sure the email I got said I'm not supposed to talk about it, but let me put it this way:

Yeah, I feel like that game's been forgotten.

More interested in the new Burnout, if there doing Burnout again is there really any need for NFS? Burnout had always been more fun.

I think Underground/Most Wanted just landed at the right time with the popularity of the Fast & Furious movies and Pimp My Ride. The dumb FMV also elevated Most Wanted somewhat, but I'm skeptical if going back in that direction will pay dividends.

Does the Need for Speed name still carry that much weight? All I really want is another Burnout Paradise.

With Rivals I reached the point where I have played more bad and disappointing Need for Speed games more than good ones. It's time to bail! EA sacrificed Burnout to make two great games (Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted) and after sacrificing Criterion for God knows why, I'm very, very skeptical of dropping any real amount of money on a NFS game. The reactions I've seen to any information out there are tepid at best.

When they first announced this new Need For Speed I was interested. As time goes by the more my interest wanes. FMV is a great way to get me to notice a game but that isn't enough to make me buy it day one.

I'm actually pretty excited it's trying to go back to the Underground and Hot Pursuit days, when the series was at its peak, as I have found the recent games both lacking as NFS and/or Burnout games, what with uninspiring worlds and mediocre driving and limited car lists. Ever since they started shuffling studios around, the series really dipped below quality level. Hopefully they'll get back to tuning, drifting, silly FMV, etc., that made the series a really good arcade driver back in the day.

The swaying camera is apparently optional, but I'm not sure that everything else with the driving actually is fine judging from some of the reception to the beta. It's hard to judge car handling from a video.

If they are forgetting NFS I will be extremely pissed considering its name recognition and guaranteed sales are apparently what killed Burnout.

Yeah. Off by default, apparently. I never saw it in the beta. I'm not sure why they show that terrible camera in every gameplay video of it.

I gave the beta a shot, but just couldn't get into it. I can tolerate the goofy FMV, but just could not get into the handling. It just felt off to me.

For my money, I'll just take another Hot Pursuit please.

They're keeping it on the down low and are trying to not over-hype it like it happens to most AAA games nowadays. They're having a way more direct approach, talking with the fans via the NFS subreddit, emails, foruns and social media and not really over-saturating everybody with marketing material.

I had access to the closed beta and it was way, WAAAAAY better than I expected! I'm not that into driving games and I don't usually buy them, but if they keep it like the beta and improve from it I will most likely get it. I felt like a teen playing Underground again. Basically, if you were into Underground / Underground 2 / Most Wanted then you're probably going to like this one, it's Underground 3 but not as arcade in it's driving (which is bad for me but a good thing to most people). I was afraid the whole "Fast and Furious tunning cars and illegal night races" culture wouldn't work in 2015 after it's prime in early 2000s but it worked just fine, they captured the spirit well.

Speaking of driving, most people complained about it but it really isn't that bad, you just have to tweak it to your playstlye and buy car parts that fit your playstyle as well. Once you get to that sweet spot, the before and after tweaking is like night and day! It could still use some improvements but trust me, it's not as bad as some people are making it sound. @johnymyko: Thanks for your take on it. I haven't tried it myself, so I can only judge it based on the beta impressions. The beta was long ago enough that they may very well have made changes since then anyway.

This game has been on my radar since it was announced since it appears to be going back to the NFS Underground style and I loved those games. But NFS as a series has been very up and down for a long time so I can't get very excited for this new one. I'm cautiously optimistic.

I haven't forgotten about it. Quite the contrary actually. The FMV seems like a throwback to Most Wanted (2005), which was dumb in so many hilarious ways.

I was really excited for the game but completely forgot about it, until they did that FMV Quick Look the other day.

Now it's preordered because I thought Rivals was super fun. Can't wait to see what they'll do with an extra year of development.

@dougcl: those late 60s early 70s gtrs are works of art.

It's kind of unrealistic for them to be in racing games since they made so few of them and there aren't many left in existence today

@devil240z: yeah, but they show up in a lot of games for whatever reason. its a fine substitute, since ill probably never see one in real life, let alone get to drive one.

i really like the weird Hako/datsun 510/Peugeot hybrid they put into GTA Online.

The 10 hour trial just hit EA Access on XB1. I'll give it another shot. I thought beta was bad, but I'll give it one more fair shake. The cars handled poorly in beta, not in a way that parts or tweaking could help. It never felt like the cars were on a road. Kind of just floating through space. I could make the car slide or grip better, but there was still a disconnect. The worst that driving has ever felt in the series. Hopefully I was just trippin and the trial changes my mind.

Did it feel like Ridge Racer in any way? I've seen some videos and it seems a bit floaty, yes, but I like how Ridge Racer handles. I also like how NFS has handled in the past (Underground 1, 2, Most Wanted (2005), and Hot Pursuit 2010). So if it's anything like any of those or like Ridge Racer, I might give it a shot.
