For example on a topic today, and not only today I see this alot, someone commented on someone's joke and had to state "No really, I laughed".
What could this come to? If another layer of sarcasm develops everything will be way too confusing. It's sad because I dont ever see this sorting itself out and sarcasm hardly ever works over the internet.
Another example: Jeff's review of Brink and the comments section

"Sorry but I'm going to need to know how many achievement points you have in this game before I can take this review seriously. "

----------------

How do you figure? Every complaint he's layed to the game are all valid and he gives reasons for it. "

That is ridiculous.

I've started going the Elcor route, it makes things easier. Here's an example:

[Grim Sarcasm]: Human embryos are fucking delicious.

Sarcasm on the internet is very hard to do. Even trying to be very obvious sometimes just results in people assuming your crazy but dead serious.

Sarcasm is something I do a lot of on Giant Bomb on accident, forgetting that people that don't know me well enough will think I'm serious and write a paragraph on why I'm wrong.

My feeling is that sarcasm only works on the internet if it is blatantly obvious. More often than not people will think it is because it sounds sarcastic in their heads, but doesn't come across that way to the average reader. That's why I personally try to avoid using sarcasm in text-form.

The problem with sarcasm is that some people don't seem to know when it's appropriate and when it's not.  My 11 year old has a very sarcastic sense of humor, and this scares me, for what she's probably going to put herself through in high school.

I don't see how you can take that statement seriously. There are times though when it's hard to notice but there are obvious ones like that one.

Oh hey, they mention me in this thread. Awesome!

For the record, I only said the "No really, I laughed" because I wanted to further the joke.

The problem with sarcasm and the internet is that it's not always easily detectable. That's why I like to use the :P smiley to denote sarcasm or similar joking. Unless it's totally obvious that what I'm saying couldn't be serious, or if I want to trick someone into thinking I'm serious.

It would be awesome if people actually used the Elcor method, though.

I actually think sarcasm is a rather nice linguistic cool. The problem is, as you say, it doesn't usually carry terribly well in text, although the example you're talking about in that Brink review is very obviously sarcastic and I've found people on this site are generally pretty good at making it clear when they're being sarcastic or ironic, that is, unless they're trying to be deliberately ambiguous in their sarcasm. I assume by "develop another layer of sarcasm" you're suggesting that communication in the near future would use even heavier sarcasm than is already the norm, but I don't see any reason for which that would happen. Unless you're trying to be deliberately ambiguous why would you write in a tone so sarcastic that no one would pick up on your sarcasm? It would defeat the purpose of it. At worse any confusion caused by sarcasm on the internet is "irritating" or "monotonous". While I understand your grievances, I certainly would go as far as to call sarcasm "scary" or "sad".

:serious face: Really...that's that hill your gonna die on? That comment Reeks, Fucking Reeks, of sarcasm.  Maybe a better example would have been the way to go. But Sarcasm may not work in the traditional sense but its the spice of life when it comes to the net.

I don't understand why people reply to comments like that if they don't realize it's sarcasm.  If you saw a comment like the one used as an example and thought it was serious, you would also have to think that person who said it is a complete moron, so why would you want to start an argument with a moron?

I don't tone down any of my sarcasm or make it any more obvious just for the internet. If you can't detect it and then angrily write me a massive essay because you thought I was being serious I laugh my ass off.

when writing anything on the internet you have to essentially make sarcasm evident. its not that hard to notice sarcasm if you indicate your bein sarcastic. i never have a problem on giantbomb noticing when reviewers are sarcastic, as they usually cue their voice. dry sarcasm is a problem no matter how you look at it (you say somethin normally without any indication in what you actually say, or how), thankfully most of the sarcasm on here is evident. if you cant notice sarcasm maybe you should have a serious talk with your mom with why she had you.
