Best COD game to date
While I had absolute blast with the original and Modern Warfare I had the most fun with Blops 2. The combo of completely bonkers\retarded\b-grade story for SP and some real fun I had with the MP. It wasn't balanced or well designed but it was fun in that really dumb but charming kind of way.
also seriously: No COD2?
It's a toss-up between the two Black Ops games for me. If I were being super serious about the question it would be either Call of Duty 4 because it started a new era of multiplayer games (for better or worse depending how you want to look at it) or maybe even Modern Warfare 2 because of how much it upped the ante on what CoD4 already succeeded with but it was held back too much by balance issues and bugs (commando pro, danger close, one man army, model 1887's, multiple care package glitches, javelin glitch, etc.)
I wasn't very good at Cod4 when I played it a little after its release but by the time the first Black Ops came out I had gotten much better at the Call of Duty multiplayer formula which made it more enjoyable for me. As well as it being pretty well balanced (as much as a Call of Duty game can be) I can probably say that I came out the other side with that being up there for my favourite, even though I didn't spend as much time with it as any of the other games due to it falling out of favour with friends.
Also I only played Call of Duty 2 with the goal of getting all the achievements by playing the campaign on veteran which I never ended up completing because goddamn D-Day is a motherfucker in that game.
CoD4 no question about it. It's absolutely the best
MW2 is CoD4 but better

LIES!
CoD2 was so good that I played it on PC and flip phones. Actually, that's the last time I played a CoD game.
Edit: Also, this poll is pretty dumb. It's like asking what's the best GTA game: 3, 4, or 5. So much is missing from the list that the results are completely useless.

Man, you can shoot down UAVs.
MW2 every day. If they had continued to balance it, I would have stuck to it for more than the 500 hours of playtime I put into it.
Black Ops 2 is second but is let down by the maps (too small, leading to smg domination).
Black Ops 1 is third. It's very good but at that point, Treyarch hadn't achieved the hit detection and feel of Infinity Ward CODs yet. It was feature rich but didn't feel quite right.
MW1 is an important game and a very good one but in terms of multiplayer, the weapon balance was off. In each category of weapons, there was one or two standout weapons and the others saw very little play (something rectified in later Call Of Dutys).
MW3 wasn't bad, it was just kinda boring. They made a lot of changes to balance that made it feel much slower than MW2.
World at War was fine I guess. It's the one I just don't remember and don't really have much love for. The only thing notable was how fucked some of the mission on Veteran were.
I've yet to play Ghosts. (This isn't a slight against it, I just haven't tried it)
@gunslingerpanda: I would accept CoD 1 as well.
Black Ops 2 and it isn't even close. It had the best balance of variety, and nothing being too overpowered. The shooting felt better than any other cod game, the maps were generally great, the variety in weapons felt excellent I felt perfectly capable using every single assault rifle, smg, sniper and lmg. Also the sniping was probably the most balanced. A lot of people felt SMGs were overpowered but personally I had no issue using any primary weapon from any category other than the shield and the shotguns. I also put more time into this cod than any prior one. I had all the diamond primaries then I reset my prestige and played a decent nnumber of prestiges again. I forget the exact count but I would guess somewhere around 5 or 6.
While it did have some weapons that stood out a little, nothing felt crazy OP to the point where I felt like I was at a disadvantage using other weapons. MW1 had the M16, MW2 had the noob tube, the ACR and the famas, MW3 was just not very good period, WaW had the MP40, Black Ops 1 was pretty good but the famas was clearly better than most other weapons.
I also loved cod 2 when I was younger but I exclusively played the single player for that one.
Of the listed games, I'd choose Black Ops II. I had some fun with COD 4:s mode where all weapons were pickups instead of using player loadouts, but that's about it. Hated the unlock system in the Modern Warfare games, Black Ops II felt a bit better, but generally I don't like loadout systems at all.
I can't say with certainty what was objectively the best, but I had the most fun with Modern Warfare 2. See, I didn't have Xbox live when MW1 released. I played a ton of the single player, but that's all the game amounted to for me. I missed out completely on it's revalutionary multiplayer. I hopped up on live around the time 2 came out, so you can imagine I played a ton of it's multiplayer. On top of that, I played the campaign so many times I lost count.
Why would you list a game that isn't even out and ignore the, like, 4 other CoD games that have been released?
Big Red One is clearly the best because of all the delightful innuendo you can draw from it.
In the spirit of this poll, I'm going to make a best Final Fantasy poll and leave off 6 and 7
^
Apparently I'm the only one ever to like Ghosts.
It's probably not the most popular opinion. I actually liked it's single player a lot though.

Yeah, this is a terrible poll. There's not even an 'Other' option at that.
I think Call of Duty 4 was the best game overall, but I was so deep into Modern Warfare 2 that it's really hard for me to pick anything else. It was definitely the peak of my enjoyment with the series, even though it's completely unplayable these days since the only people that stuck around were the cheaters.
Call of Duty 4. Play All Ghillied Up with headphones on and tell it's not one of the best goddamn missions in a FPS campaign ever.
Runner up for me is Black Ops.
Call of Duty 2.
Not only is it the best (I would entertain an argument for 1), but it was the last game in the series that was actually balanced.
I do think EXO suits have ruined "classic COD" with double jumping. Although, personally CoD4 will be my favorite with World at War close behind.
i can't believe you had the audacity to put Ghosts on here and leave off MW3. Ghosts is the worst Call of Duty IMO. Worse than Call of Duty 3. At least Call of Duty 3 has a reason for not being great, it was a Treyarch's first Call of Duty and it was pre Modern Warfare. Call of Duty Ghosts is something that should be buried in the desert.
