Hey, I was just wondering what people thought the best free anti virus software was.
I am looking for a some and input would be greatly welcomed.
Thanks.
Best free anti virus software?
" malwarebytes "This dug out some stuff that really harmed my computer and saved me from having to reinstall my entire OS.
I have a couple to recommend. And they happen to be:
- AVG Free
- MalwareBytes
- Threatfire
- HijackThis
These are all the free programs I have used. However, if you don't mind paying for a program I highly recommend that you try NOD32, from ESET. It's a damned good program and it does the job well while still being light on resources. No complaints with it here!
" if your careful with what you do on the internet then you don't need anti-virus software "You have NO IDEA how wrong you are. This is the most incorrect statement I think I've ever read on Giant Bomb. I'm being serious. That's no exaggeration. This is so incredibly wrong, I felt a grave disturbance in the force the second this was posted, and fell writhing on the floor in pain for 5 minutes before I recovered.
As for everyone who said, AVG: I agree, but be careful- it doesn't catch everything. I advise using, say, Microsoft's free one as well as AVG, which is really really good... it just takes hours to scan. I scan AVG once every few days, and microsoft's every week.
I guess I'm just lucky then, either that or your a Mac user, lol" @calidan777 said:

On topic, I use Nod32, yes a paid antivirus but it's updated continuously and has worked great. I've only heard of AVG that people use.

2) "buya real OS." I honestly don't see anything making Windows 7 any better than Ubuntu 10.4. And Windows 7 is $100 more expensive.
3) Have you ever tried Linux, or have you just hopped on the "linux is teh gay" bandwagon? I bet you haven't. Tsk tsk tsk.
I used Avast before my stepdad got me (and made me obligated to use) Kapersky. I really, really liked Avast; easy to use, thorough, just about everything you want from a (free) anti-virus program.
Just make sure you turn off reminders- they have a tendency to scare you if your volume is too loud.
I like others, use AVG. I don't ever get any virus alerts though, like ever. I guess that's a good thing...
Avast is the best, avg deletes important stuff as false postives. Not sure about the program these days, it did that before.
Microsoft Security Essentials.
Once it was released it more or less rendered every other virus scan useless. I uninstalled AVG, which is shit in comparison. There's no need to use any other virus scan. Although Essentials handles spyware, I also run Spybot as an extra measure. And I use CCleaner for my registry, and the combo of those three covers everything.
