I'm oldschool so my heart still goes to the BFG, but the coolest one is definitely the Portal gun.
 
Another one I'd pop on the list is the old cerebral bore, although I'm not sure if that's a gun so much as some kind of launcher.

The shotgun from Half-Life 2 was very satisfying.

UT99's Ripper is pretty cool. Bouncing Saw-Blades that can headshot? Fuck yes.

The best is the shotgun from the original Doom. I am also a fan of the rail gun from Quake 3, but then I love the Minigun from the Unreal series.

I don't rember the shotgun from original doom but the rail gun from quake 3 waz beast!!!

Since when are crowbars, energy swords, pipe bombs and chainsaws considered guns? 
 
If this is just a "best weapon" thread, Kulshedra and Durga from Bayonetta, and the God Hand from God Hand (I know, that's three weapons, but I just couldn't choose.)

If it's actually supposed to be a "best gun" thread... Ebony and Ivory from Devil May Cry. Honourable mentions go to the M-920 Cain from Mass Effect 2, and the Red9 from Resident Evil 4.

i think valve pretty much owns this poll lol. the portal gun and the gravity gun are easily the two most inventive and fun to use weapons ever designed for video games.

edit: correct me if this is is influenced by ignorance (as i have only played through the original dmc), but what was so great about ebony and ivory? seemed like regular pistols to me.

I voted gravity gun, it's very versitile. You can always pick up stuff as ammo and throw it. Still a real gun would be easier if you have alot of magazines.

Where's the spread gun from Contra? It singlehandedly makes a hard game (not as hard as everyone says, but still hard) almost simple.

Hard to decide, but I would say all of GTA4's guns. Have a nice kick to em.

Other: Selvaria's gun from Valkyria Chronicles that you get for beating her DLC missions. The thing has the accuracy and range and damage of a sniper riffle, with the ammo of a machine gun. Enemies 100 yards away can't take 2 steps without losing most of their health. It's also pretty great at taking out tanks.

Quake 3 Rail Gun FTW.

Man, there's alot of good stuff in here.  Still have to stick with the line gun though.  Probably the most fun to use just to see what happens to the poor dudes you use it on.

A gun that shoots knives.  I haven't encountered one in a game yet, though.

Portal Gun isn't really a gun, it can't shoot bullets. But I'd go with the Shotgun from Doom.

Most of these aren't even guns...

Damn, this reminded me that I have a copy of Force Unleashed waiting for me to play it after I bought it cheap on Steam.
 
And I voted for the Halo pistol. It wasn't even a multiplayer thing. It just made headshots/killing Hunters feel so good!
