Please read: The following is based on the approximated sales figures stated on Wikipedia. It is not any sort of pro-xbox/wii/ps3 rant. It is just a few things people seem to ignore, and a few things I can make from the numbers. I'd search for year by year figures but I am lazy and this is meant to be brief.

Sales Figures

As well all know, the Nintendo Wii has sold the most units of the current console generation, followed by Microsoft's Xbox 360 and then the Sony Playstation 3, this is not what I have written this about, as this is knowledge we all accept.

ConsoleTotal SalesAvailable since
Wii86,000,00019.11.2006
Xbox 36055,000,00022.11.2005
PS350,000,00011.11.2006

As we can see; the Wii is the clear leader, with the 360 and PS3 falling far behind.

But if we look at various averages it shows a slightly different picture.

-WiiPlaystation 3Xbox 360
Yearly19,111,11111,111,11110,000,000
Monthly1,563,636909,090820,895
Weekly359,832209,205189003
Daily51,09929.56827,690

And there you are the average sales, based on the approximate total sales of mid-2011. Obviously they mean very little, but some of you may find this interesting, some of you may not; such is life.

And one last quick fact, since it's release there has been a Wii sold every 2 seconds. That is a little bit scary right?

When I said brief, clearly I meant brief. I can't really think of much I want to add to this, nor can I bothered to think, I'm going to go and play TF2.

If any of you have any requests as to figures I should include then awesome.

Games sold per system to date.

Ok I found something else I can add. The average games sold compared to how consoles have been sold. (People don't seem to realise, this is new purchases, it does NOT include used)

ConsoleConsoles soldGames soldAverageRatio
Wii78,000,000716,000,0009.11:9.1
PS350,000,000315,000,0006.31:6.3
Xbox 36055,000,000353,000,0006.41:6.4

Gamecube21,740,000208,000,0009.51:9.5

Again; make of this what you will. I find it interesting. I hope you do too.

Good job. People always seem so keen to go on just total or just recent numbers when debating popularity and sales. One figure from one place in time doesn't give you the whole picture.

This is why I don't understand people writing off Nintendo and the Wii U. They've been making profit off every Wii since it launched so even if the Wii U is a flop they've got more than enough in the tank to keep going.

It is pretty crazy that the PS3 is only 5 million units behind than the 360 when the 360 came out a year earlier.

The Wii sold well but I don't know if the WiiU will continue that streak.

I know and the Wii had some very cool games. I loved that little motion box, can't wait for the Wii U.

What I get from this is that there have been a huge amount of total console sales in the last 5-6 years. About 191 million consoles sold, and that doesn't include handhelds. A lot of people are playing games, or at least buying consoles. That's a good thing.

Man I thought the 360 was dominating the PS3 but they aren't that far behind. That being said it looks like PS2 is still king, maybe next generation consoles will finally surpass it.

People buy 9 games for the Wii, but half a dozen for the Xbox?

There is something very wrong with these numbers.
Are there really people with one or two games out there?

Was just thinking whilst making a cup of tea; if they make just £10 profit from each console sold that's £780,000,000 and then as low as a £1 licensing fee for each game they have made £1.5 billion in profit. And I am pretty sure the figures will be more than that.

I own 4 360 games but about 12 wii games. It's an average based on figures hosted on Wikipedia remember, it may be out of date, but it is somewhat factual.

Plus if you take into account the, reported, 50% hardware failure rate of the 360 then it could just mean that a lot of people bought than one console, but still like 10 games? I dunno.

Some people buy very few game, considering I have about 60 PS3 games...

Good lord, I see these games number and my mouth just goes wide. I have like 145 Xbox 360 games... How could so many people only buy a few games?

@AlmostApollo: Like I said just, I only own 4.

A lot of people buy them for literally one or two games.

Plus it doesn't take used games into account.

I have a Wii that has probably seen 5 games, an Xbox that has probably seen 50, and a PS3 that has probably seen 10.
