Mars Volta-esque, perhaps? Recently, Bruce suggested The Dirty Projectors to me, and I really liked the few songs I heard, but I don't even know if I was listening to their good stuff. I also just heard a Flaming Lips song for the first time, and I really liked it as well.
So basically, can some people suggest weird bands or give me some direction with The Dirty Projectors or The Flaming Lips?
Can anyone suggest me some weird music?
You should check out Motel de Moka... It's a really great music blog that covers ALOT of genres but the main theme is that they use alot of music theory and knowledge to create whole playlists that sounds very organic, progress naturally and usually covers one certain mood or atmosphere... Plus all the music is downloadable, from small labels and I can pretty much guarantee that you only know around 10-20% of the music.
Give it a try!
"Any particular songs you would suggest? I'm listening to The Restless Waves right now and really digging it.

Go with Sue's Last Ride or I Remember A Time When You Used To Love Me. Anything off the Horse Stories album is generally gold so start there. Then go on to the Ocean Songs album and you'll be well on your way. And if by some miracle you are able to see them live, destroy a busload of schoolchildren to get a ticket.
Radiohead is my favorite band too :D
Try listening to A Silver Mt. Zion. Here, this one is called "Mountains Made of Steam", as a fellow Radiohead fanatic I can say they are very weird, but very good.
It's one of my favorite songs, of all time. Listen carefully.
This isn't that strange of a band, but it seems like you would fancy Porcupine Tree. If you want weirder stuff try Incredible Expanding Mindfuck.
Fantomas is a little TOO weird for me, I love Delirium Cordia, but all of the other stuff is too creepy...
The Mars Volta is always pretty trippy. Pick any song from De-loused in the Comatorium and just enjoy the drugged up and really strange sounds that follow. But you probably already know that.
If you can find anything by them, The Paper Chase is another weird band. All of their stuff sounds like it is the soundtrack to a horror movie. "Said the Spider to the Fly" and "We Know Where You Sleep" are both solid suggestions.
I think I'll just throw out a song from a band in list form now.
Dial 911! by The March Hare
Anthems For A Seventeen Year Old Girl by Broken Social Scene
Peacock Skeleton With Crooked Feathers by Blood Brothers
Shadow of a Man by Oysterhead
Two Weeks by Grizzly Bear (The video for this one actually creeped me out.)
Oracles on the Delphi Express or Smiling Swine by The Dear Hunter
Not all of those are really weird, but worth checking out.
" @Themanohall said:*laugh* Nice. Personally, I love me some experimental noise. But y'know what I love more? Going to see FNM in a couple of weeks. Aweswick." @onimonkii: Fantomas is a little TOO weird for me,"
Word. Good luck to Patton and his BLEEP BLOOP IKKA ECK FUH FUH PURPLE MONKEY DISHWASHER songs but they're not my cup of tea. "
" I haven't heard that much of These Arms Are Snakes, but what I have heard I like. The only thing that lets them down for me is the vocals (they can be a bit shouty) but the music is pretty damn solid. "I listened to Horse Girl, and didn't really like it. Is that just what they are like, or am I listening to the wrong stuff?
@xyzygy:
I'm listening to it right now and I really like it, but the guys voice is REALLY grating. Do you get used to it?
if you want a listenable weird band, try Fuck Buttons:
or if you want a challenging weird band, try Adam Saikaley:
I just finished the song, and it was amazing.
EDIT: The first song. After the first 4 or so minutes the guys voice got bearable. And yeah, I really liked the emotion he held.
Mindless Self Indulgence was pretty weird to me back in the day. They've toned it down now though. Look for their album Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy.
I dunno why you'd call The Mars Volta weird though... trippy perhaps.
... Mars Volta... strange? Pfft, more like Greatness! But hmm, let me see... I don't know if you want "strange" as in rock or just plain ol' "strange" anything? I'll just suggest shit I happen to like that maybe people that listen to popular music will indeed... find strange. *shrugs*
First since you like Mars Volta then you should check out

I think this is the kind of stuff you mean. If you want some thing of the wall have a look at Raymond Deane's Seachanges.
Definitely
Animal Collective. Also: Radiohead (I don't really consider them "weird"), Panda Bear, Dan Deacon, Women, Caribou, Deerhunter, El Guincho, Grizzly Bear, Micachu and The Shapes, MGMT, Portishead, Tom Waits, Yeasayer, and Why?Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Why?, Dan Deacon, Grizzly Bear and Radiohead are my favorites there. That's just the really weird stuff, but I'm sure you can classify the rest of the stuff I listen to as weird, too.
Btw, if you like those bands I have a list of all of my favorite bands on my account. :)
Edit: This is the first song I've ever heard by Animal Collective a few years back, and remains one of my favorites.
I really liked both songs, especially the first. The second one was really different than anything I've heard before.
I really liked the first song. The second one isn't really my style, and the third one was pretty good." Sigur Ros

EDIT: Dude, Seachanges was amazing.
If you like Radiohead you might like this one as well... One of my personal favorites at the time (sorry for the low audio quality, you can hear it in better quality at aforementioned website)
Radiohead pretty much ripped it of in Reckoner all the way down to the 5 bar period!
Thanks for the site, man! I'm really liking it.
@Noodlearms:
Yeah, I'm really liking Animal Collective. Radiohead is one of my favorites (if not my favorite), and MGMT is pretty high up there. Somebody liked me to Tom Waits earlier, and I didn't really like him.
" This isn't that strange of a band, but it seems like you would fancy Porcupine Tree. If you want weirder stuff try Incredible Expanding Mindfuck. "
Would you mind suggesting me an album or a couple of songs from Porcupine Tree? I had a friend who really hated them tell me they would switch from like, hiphop to metal.
Yeah, I saw that video (and heard the song) for the first time a few weeks ago on a blog, creepy stuff.
I'm listening to the stuff you suggested now. I'm liking The Paper Chases instrumental stuff, but the guys voice is really bugging me, at least for the first song. It's not as bad in the second so far.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Jeff Gerstman's http://midnightbrown.com/
That music is pretty..out there.

I can honestly say I loved all but maybe 4 of those songs, and all of them were great.
" @Themanohall: Colouring of Pigeons by The Knife (It's a song), and Fever Ray's debut album. Also, the new Beach House. Not really weird, but it's different. PS: The Dirty Projectors cd you need to listen to is Bitte Orca. lol "Colouring of Pigeons was great. I'll get around to the CD's later this week, when I'm not in such a rush to reply to everyone.
