Back then ads were always popping up on our screens. These days you never see pop ups anymore so they are unnecessary.

No because I'm too lazy, and I don't mind banners. It's how sites make their revenue. Also there are basically no real popups anymore.  Unless you're looking at porn, you dirty dirty bastards.

yes, ad-blocker and noscript.   i kind of miss pop ups. those were annoying as hell when browsing websites.

the new things are to have banners across the website. the annoying ones are the one that say "congratulations u just won a ipod nano. "

I do, but I turn it off for sites I care about, and want to support with ad views. Like Giant Bomb!

I use AdBlocker Plus on Firefox. It not only stops pop-ups but lots of ads on the side of websites. I like it.

No way. It doesn't cost me anything to take two seconds to look at an ad. When I do that, free sites make money and we all win. Pop-ups suck, but like @Wolverine said, no one really uses them. Except... Nevermind. No one uses them.

Yeah, Ad-Block Plus. I only leave ads on websites where the ads are actually relevant to the content of the website or if it's stuff that I'm interested - like the New York Times, or Giant Bomb. You get sites like 1UP that have the generic ads by Google and whatever giant online ad company, like ads for Evony and other BS. No, I would not like a new wallpaper. No, I would not like a new screensaver. No, I would not like to download your zip file of smilies that also contains a bunch of malware. It just makes the sites look bad. I'd rather see a donate button than an ad.

It reminds me of the telephone marketing gags in Seinfeld.

Marketer: Would you like a subscription to X Magazine?
Jerry: Oh, I was actually on the way out right now. Why don't you give me your phone number, and I'll call you back later?
Marketer: I can't do that.
Jerry: I guess you don't like people ringing you up at home.
Marketer: No.
Jerry: Well, now you know how I feel. *slams down phone*

Or something like that, in any case.

NoScript is great. You wouldn't believe how many different processes some web sites try to run.

Well I've recently had to move to satellite internet, so I've got a flash-blocker and an ad-blocker. Got to cut away all the unnecessary bandwidth. Got to keep room for the porn.
