I've dowloaded a zip file for an album of songs. Normally my mac just unpacks it, but for some bizarre reason it is converting them into .cpgz files, which I can't do anything with. Whats going on and how can I fix this? (I've read somewhere that it could have been possibly been due to the files being made on a PC or something, if that helps).

Edit: I've managed to find a way to unpack the file. Feel free to lock this mods.

Maybe you can try redownloading it. Could just be corrupted.

@NaCl: Tried that a couple of times. I've now got like 7 .cpgz files.

I had an inkling I'd have problems with this as soon as I saw the Sony Music logo.

Ah... So illegal copying. That sounds like a question for a different site.

Copying isn't illegal.

Not in all cases. That's why I said "illegal copying" as opposed to "copying." If the files are encrypted using some type of proprietary Sony music codec, it doesn't sound like the files are legit.

Wat. I'm using a free download code I got with a Modest Mouse vinyl. There is nothing illegal about this.

Well that just sounds like a bad system then. Is it possible that there were two codes? One for pc and one for mac? You can run into the same problem with digital copies of movies if you use the wrong code.

@BrockNRolla: Naa. It just told me to type in some web address and type a code in. I've got the zip file, so I guess I could find a friend with a PC and convert the files on there if its a problem with my mac.

You can consider trying a 3rd party decompresser like Keka. Who knows it might work.

Hopefully that will work. It is possible I guess that these Sony music files can only be played on a PC (Sometimes digital editions aren't cross compatible, though I can't imagine why that would still be the case in our modern day). I'd google file conversion software too. Sometimes tech savvy people with a lot of time on their hands code conversion software.

As a Mac note, you should also be able to use the command "ditto <path/to/filename>" from a bash shell (open the Terminal Application) to unpack this. You can do "man ditto" to get the insane manual page.

If this filename was foo and you dropped it into Downloads, you'd do the following:

ditto ~/Downloads/foo

and it would decompress.
