I've been itching to watch a good film lately.  So I'd like some suggestions from the GB community.

To give you guys an idea of the type of movies I like, my favorite movies of all time are, in no particular order:

  • A Clockwork Orange
  • Reservoir Dogs
  • The Wrestler
  • The Assassination of Jesse James
  • The Professional (aka Leon)
  • Bladerunner
I'm a big fan of quirky, sci fi flicks ala A Clockwork Orange.  Do not recommend me a Tarantino movie because I have seen all of them.  Also, Kubrick is out of the question as well.

You actually liked Jesse James? Wow. Umm, I'd suggest (If you're open minded) Brokeback Mountain + a Brazilian film by the name of City of God; it's a terrific movie.

Then you might like The Fifth Element. It is a great sci fi movie with a great message.

Probably already seen it, but the first movie to pop into my head was Donnie Darko.

You seem to be into the slightly darker movies, and you have Bladerunner on there which means that maybe you enjoy noir? You've also got Jesse James, which I believe is a western. In which case, I recommend Unforgiven, which is possibly the best damn western ever made, and it has some distinct noir elements.

Uhh, I remember The Proposition being pretty visually striking.  It was written and scored by the same two guys who did the Assassination of Jesse James.  Tenuous link, I know, but it's pretty decent.

It's not sci-fi, but if you want to see two deathly trippy Westerns, I'd also recommend El Topo or The Holy Mountain by Alejandro Jodorowsky.  Watching those, it's just...like, this nameless awe and disbelief. The whole time.

I agree with the Jesse James one, great movie. So I see you like westerns. 3:10 to Yuma is fantastic. I'm talking about the 2007 one, I havn't seen the original.

i'd second The Proposition, although the previous poster who mentioned it was mostly incorrect, one of the two guys who scored The Proposition also scored Jesse James, the two guys who scored The Proposition were Warren Ellis (not that Warren Ellis) and Nick Cave, (yes, THAT nick cave.) Cave also wrote the proposition, but had nothing to do with Jesse James.

Anyway, some other picks:

Bamboozled
There Will Be Blood
City of God
Let The Right One In
Zodiac
Michael Clayton
3:10 To Yuma
Good Night And Good Luck
2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick's best by far.)
anything by Kurosowa particularly Ran, The Seven Samurai and Roshomon.

and if you liked The Wrestler, check out David Mamet's Redbelt.

i'm also with you on Assassination of Jesse James, a brilliant, patient, character driven masterpiece that dared to choose patience and grace over cartoonish charicature as so many Jesse James films do.

I know this doesn't go with the movies you said very well but watch Ninja Scroll if haven't before. Yeah, it may be anime but it's pretty damn awesome.

some Noir films that come to mind:

No Country For Old Men (Cohen Brothers' masterpiece. essential viewing.)
A Blast of Silence (one of the original noir movies.)
Taxi Driver (Scorsese's breakout, beautiful character driven classic.)
M. (another O.G noir movie.)
The Maltese Falcon (again, O.G. bogart kills it.)
Old Boy (korean noir barely based on a far infirior japanese manga)
Eastern Promises ( a newer noir movie by David Cronnenberg, also vigo mortenson's penis!)
Collateral (Michael Mann's dialogue-driven crime thriller, highly underrated. watch it twice, catch the dialogue, enjoy.)

@TheFreeMan: i would hesitate to call Bladerunner noir, it's a police procedural and a science fiction flick, that doesn't really denote noir sensibilities, other than i suppose the visual style, but that visual style isn't 'filmnoir' except to people who dont know anything about film noir.

@pakx:

M. is a classic; Eastern Promises, much like Viggo's penis, was rather underwhelming.

@Bruce: i liked it, i thought it came apart a little at the end, but as a not-very-ambitious kind of crime thriller, i thought it was more than alright.

I haven't seen the whole movie, but it sure felt like noir, IMO. The shady city setting, the subject matter-cop story, gray moral areas-and the visuals, which seemed to use a fair amount of kuroscaro lighting (sp? I can never spell that damn word right) lean it towards noir to me. However, that's just me.

@TheFreeMan: i'd still hesitate to line it up with noir on the basis that it's moral greyness was more about science fiction morality than crime genre morality.

BTW, The American version is called The Professional and the european version is call Leon The Professional, if you have not seen the european version I would highly suggest it  as it is much better than the American one

I meant to say Nick Cave scored Jesse James, but looks like I opted to go with the lazier, nondescript "did."  My bust.

Some movies I've watched recently and would recommend...

  • The Fly (1958 version with Vincent Price)
  • Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
  • Children of Men (2006)
  • Changeling (2008)
  • Vengeance is Mine (1979)
  • The Wackness (2008)

The Dollars Quadrology (I know, it's often thought of as a trilogy, and the last one doesn't have Eastwood, but it fits, I promise):

A Fist Full of Dollars
For a Few Dollars More
The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
Once Upon a Time in the West

Classics, and for a modern comparison:

El Mariachi
Desperado
Once Upon A Time In Mexico

@Wolverine: I saw it years ago and I vividly remember a smoking hot actress with a ludicrous haircut.  It was a good flick though.

Gattaca seems like a blatant Blade Runner ripoff.  Is there any difference?

@BiffMcBlumpkin: That looks positively ridiculous, in a good way.  Think I'm going to check that one out.

Thanks to everyone for these great suggestions; several of these I've never heard of (City of God?) and I'll definately look into a lot of these.

I guess I liked it because Hayden Christensen's character seems pretty cool and the girl he gets with is really hot. I like those movies James Bond type movies where you look up to the main character.

Brazil was a life-altering film for me. As a wee lad, I'd snuck out to watch late-night television while eveyone else was asleep. This film came on. I've never been the same since.
