Isn't is horrifying to realize that scientists are taking particles accelerating them to light speed and crashing them into each other. This results in the production of anti-matter, which destroyed normal matter on contact, and miniature black holes. So we could be blow up or crushed into a singularity.
Now I love me some science and sure the odd of the world ending this way are slim but its disturbing to think a couple in guys in lab coats are temping fate with the entire world.
Science is scary
I think they fired it once but they had to change out some faulty parts or something so they haven't done it agian.
" I wouldn't worry "Well I'm not going to lose sleep over it or anything, its just kinda freaky to think about it.
" @CL60 said:Yeah I know they already tried but it broke and they delayed it, so I'm asking when are they trying again." When are they starting that thing up anyway? I know it was supposed to start a while ago, but they delayed it. "Already did it and failed to do it right "
wikipedia say they're trying again in November. They are also planing to upgrade the Large Hadron Collider to the Super Large Hadron Collider in 2012." @PeasForFees said:

Real life is scary, science is just the process by which we learn more about it. They do NOT accelerate particles "to the speed of light", they accelerate them to an asymptotic approach at the speed of light. Singularities do NOT get caused by particle collisions, they get caused by having large quantities of mass in super-dense states. Anti-matter does indeed get created by the dudes at CERN and other places around the world, but the energy you put in to create it is many, many times larger than the energy you get out from the anti-matter.
All of the anti-matter ever produced in the whole world would barely be enough to put a visible dent in your finger nail if it was all combined together and thrown at you.
yeah i was talking to my chemistry teacher about this and he also said that they are so fast that nothing would happen, but he also said that if there were a miscalculation and something went horrobly wrong, a black holes could possibly happen, but not a big probability. yeah it's kinda freaky to think about" One of my teachers at school said something along the lines of the black holes that thing creates comes and goes so fast that there is absolutely nothing to worry about. " @Valames said:I was reading more about this (on trusty wikipedai) on they theroized that if stable black holes (which would be microscopic in size) formed as a result of the Collider, the rate of their growth would be so small that they wouldn't have any noticable efects in the lifespan of the solar system.yeah i was talking to my chemistry teacher about this and he also said that they are so fast that nothing would happen, but he also said that if there were a miscalculation and something went horribly wrong, a black holes could possibly happen, but not a big probability. yeah it's kinda freaky to think about "" One of my teachers at school said something along the lines of the black holes that thing creates comes and goes so fast that there is absolutely nothing to worry about. Of course all of this is hypotheical and its pretty possible some unknown result of the Collider besides anitmatter or black holes will kill us all!
I know that the LHC is supposed to kill us all and whatnot, but what is its original purpose? I mean, I don't think it was just build so there would be a possibility we could all die in a badass way.
" One word... or compound word... or hyphened word.... anyways! SUPERPOWERS! "hmmm, never thought about it like that. Time to go house shopping near a certain super collider!

" One word... or compound word... or hyphened word.... anyways! SUPERPOWERS! "Compound word was right.
Anyways, what is that thing supposed to solve or discover? I mean how do we use anti-matter?
You misunderstand what the LHC is: it's designed to mimic the conditions of the big bang (among other things). There isn't the slightest risk of destroying the planet: the black hole that is created would be incredibly small and would only last for a minute fraction of a second. No antimatter is being created (not that we have enough energy create enough antimatter to do ANY major damage anyways).
Any rumors you hear about this having the power to destroy the earth is just that - a rumor.
" @SpikeSpiegel: I dunno, maybe it is a conspiracy. "When I get sucked into a black hole for the sake of science I'm going to sue.

i have my FINGERS CROSSED wishing that they end the world... too good to happen, espicially if i want it, but i just wish ...
The black holes that the collision creates exists for such short periods of time (less then a nanosecond afaik) that they barely can be measured. There is nothing to be worried about, as they cannot be sustained for them to expand - there just isn't enough mass in the collision.
The reason they are testing this out is to basically see what the universe is made of, and if there are smaller particles then quarks (? have they actually found those? Don't remember). And I think that there is some use for colliding particles like this, maybe to produce lots of energy out basically nothing. Um I'm not sure about that last part and physics never was my most awesome subject, so feel free to correct me.
Don't worry. if scientist accidentally creates something that could destroy the world a lone hero (with wife and kids issues) would rise up and save the day. He'll then rejoin his abandoned family and they'll live happily ever after.

They attempted it back in September of 2008, but the first high-energy collisions were supposed to happen for anothermonth. Obviously, it was shut-down before that could happen, so it could undergo various safety adjustments and to fix what went wrong." @PeasForFees said:
