I personally hate AOTS, Kristen Holt, and all the shows that don't have to do with games (except Ninja Warrior which I indefensibly like). X-play is okay, but they've made Morgan with so much less personality than she actually has. I started watching in 2002 when the channel had a soul. I thought many of the hosts were quite good, esp. Diane Mizota from Filter and that quirky dude (Cory Rouse i think) from Cheat!. I watched Judgement Day regularly.
I know a lot of people though who really like the channel now though, so yeah. What do you guys think of what G4 has become and what it was before?
What do you guys think of G4?
its pretty good....i like the laid back attitude of AOTS...its kinda funny when everything seems to be so 'thought up on the spot'
"RVonE said:"A lot"? There's about three shows about video games and technology. The rest are weird Japanese shows or crap like Cops."What is a G4?"TV Channel with a lot of tech and video game shows, used to be Tech TV
"
i enjoyed tech tv thow, they had some interesting shows- did they get anywhere near good ratings, not at all, way too boring.
I loved Tech TV when it was around. But G4 is basically trash. Especially when they play shows like Cheaters...
oh and they need to stop using old ass tv show re-runs like cops to get half decent ratings. make some new shows
Well the channel was bad for a while until they started listening to its fans, which brought back the G4Rewind block, as well as revamping X-Play into a 30 minute fast paced daily show. So I'm pretty neutral on the status of G4, especially after they brought a pretty good E3 coverage this year.
My interest in G4 is diminishing rapidly.
X-Play still can't find its voice... 2 years ago, its tone was too immature, but had flashes of greatness. Now, it's watered down and not as fun to watch. I think it was a nice experiment to flesh out the show during the lean summer months by getting into more previews, interviews, and news, but Sessler and Webb aren't in their element when they're conducting an interview. And that whole audience interaction thing with people on webcams and cellphones... ugh! That segment needs to go.
I wish they would stick to game reviews, and leave previews to other shows.
AOTS is OK, but it could be 30 minutes and still get the job done. I am watching it more and more, but I dunno... anyone else like it better when they have guest hosts? I honestly think Anna David did a fantastic job as guest host a while back, so much so that it made it difficult to go back to Olivia Munn.
I miss Keighley's work with G4, but he's elsewhere now, and his show on Spike is just as vanilla as anything on G4.
As for their non-game stuff, Ninja Warrior is OK, but it's played out, as is Unbeatable Banzuke.
Hurl is just grotesque and really is a low point for the network.
Honestly, I wish the network would go back to some of its TechTV roots and give us some shows about computers and consumer electronics.
And man, oh, man, do I wish they would bring back Game Makers (formerly Icons... not the crappy rebrand one). Game Makers was great.
I watched it religiously when it was TechTV. Judgment Day was my favorite show, then they canned it. I also watched a lot of Screensavers but they they turned it into AOTS and it sucks now. The whole channel has just gone downhill.
When G4 was good...
- Arena, hey it had the same games every episode but it was quality gaming entertainment.
- Electric Playground; those guys had a lot of character.
- X-Play before 2005, had reliable reviews and less previews/bad skits.
- Screensavers.
- When G4 only showed "majority" video game shows, why do they have softcore porn on there now?
- When you didn't have to watch a commercial every 5 minutes.
- BEFORE G4 RUINED THEIR OWN STATION.
I can't stand how much they try to sex up their hosts, which is why i think olivia munn is terrible. When Sarah Lane was a host, her and Kevin had actual chemistry. I dunno, man, i guiltily do watch that show more than i should solely because it used to have games and now i search and find very little. It just makes me sad and i wish somehow they could bring back what they once had.
Sessler is the man. He truely is one of the great gaming voices (when not scripted). Dan "Shoe" Hsu is a great addition, other then them, the network is worthless
My satellite package doesn't offer G4, but they do offer free month trials - and I don't like it much. I certainly wouldn't upgrade my package for it.
I've been watching G4TV for a while now, it did change a ton of the few years. Although, through all the changes G4 still is a valuable source for gaming. There are some good game journalists on there as well, many shows are are outrageous too.
PS... Olivia Munn, Morgan Webb and Kristin Holt are some of my current favorites.
I love it. The frequent showings of Cops, Ninja Warrior, and Unbeatable Banzuke I could do without as well as Hurl. "Oh yeah guys, let's make a gameshow all about vomiting.... EXCEPT WE WILL NOT SHOW THE ACTUAL PUKE!!11!!1!!! lul!"
Other than that, Adam Sessler's scripted jokes can get old after awhile and Blaire Butler's creeps me out sometimes. But AOTS is usually fun to watch and X-Play isn't bad either. I miss Cinematech and Judgement Day though
I totally do not need an entire channel dedicated to manly programming and tech gizmos. X-Play's always just an alright television show that tries to make itself into hard hitting game reviewership. But their immature humor to go along with their content is never in balance, and in reality feels extremely scripted. I don't get the vibe that I am reading the personality of either Webb or Sessler. Morgan Webb's personality just screams towards "wannabe hardcore gamer" when her tastes are probably more on the conventional. Which is not wrong except you are trying to pass yourself as something you are not.
I feel both Sessler and Webb have some very solid potential, and without a network feeding them lines, it would probably make for very interesting readership someplace on the web. But as it stands, I do not think Morgan would parlay a glamorous position as a gaming personality hottie into the more fractionalized world of true editorial work.
The rest of the network's original content makes for, quite frankly, embarrassing viewing. I can watch the BBC News, then flip over and see something on their news feed that completely makes me roll my eyes. "The news that matters to you." Yeah...go fuck yourself much? If you are going to do a newsfeed, don't use a scroll bar. And don't bill it as this news you need to know crap. The news that matters involves Apple taking a ten percent share hit because they are viewed as not continuing quarter one profits into quarter two. Or...how about what is going on besides little electronic gadgets and gizmos?
I used to like watchig G4.. now I watch it here and there usually when they're actually talking about games and tech on AOTS instead of showing youtube and break.com videos... that irritates me because half the show now is about showing videos on the internet... and theres too many cops and cheaters reruns... whats those got to do with anything G4 used to be.
