What Is The Greatest Hip-Hop Beat Ever?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
Any of those that I've heard are less interesting to me than Dr. Dre's work with N.W.A. or Eminem and Kanye West's production work. I might pick Drive Slow, that song is SWANKY. There are probably better choices by West; Jesus Walks obviously comes to mind. There's also Gangsta Gangsta, which is DOPE.
Those are all good beats.... But I would say a DJ Premier beat. Arguably one of the best if not the best producer dead or alive
Something filled with the N word by Dr. Dre featuring Snoop Dogg and another black rapper who was shot sometime in the 90s.
Edit: On a serious note, The Next Episode - Dr. Dre ft. Snoop Dogg & Nate Dogg. Damn look how close my sarcastic post was!

most overrated of all time. he can only make one beat, he does it well, but he never advanced or progressed. lex luger of ny rap.
shook ones definitely a good choice.
Most people are probably going to dislike my choice, but I might have to go with a few Tech N9ne songs. A decent example would probably this:
Never been a fan of 90's rap, so I couldn't say with that era of songs. I prefer 90's R&B to 90's Rap, and the opposite for the 2000's. Also, the past few Eminem albums were pretty solid, beat-wise, as well.
Best? Of all time?
It's Shook Ones pt2 it's not even up for disscussion.
Actually it totally deserves disscussion, there's so many choices for "greatest of all time". The Message is definitely one of the candidates....
Thats probably why I still love his productions. Honestly, I dont find that a bad thing.@the_OFFICIAL_jAPanese_teaBAG said:

I can't stop listening to A Milli by lil wayne at the minute, so I'll go with that.
Naaa probably BOB by Outkast
Aaah I have no idea. Too many to name.
I honestly can't pick, overall I think I enjoy Just Blaze production the most along with Exile, Kanye, Q-tip, Nujabes, J Dilla and Premo, but damn, there's so many great producers out there who have made incredible beats. I could pick practically 1000 different beats that I love and adore and would consider up there, and a quarter of those would probably be the ones actually suitable for this.
That said, Can I Kick It? Probably takes my vote, more or less any Tribe beat is up there.
Excellent thread. For the sake of not flooding this thread with videos I'll limit myself to three.
It doesn't get more chill than this:
It doesn't get more badass than this:
And it doesn't get more smooth than this:

Also a favourite of mine.
Searchin' for the perfect beat I see. This is a question that is difficult, reveals the quality of taste or lackthereof in someone's hip-hop knowledge, and is probably impossible to answer. I personally don't like GOAT questions because they feel arbitrary. With that said the best beat ideally is something definitive, something that represents the beat heavy nature of a break beat but also the sampling nature of hip-hop's history. Here are some I would have suggested:
- DWYCK - Gang Starr
- Supa Star - Group Home
- I Went For Mine - Diamond D
- Take It Personal - Gang Starr
- Mind Playin' Tricks On Me - Geto Boys
- T.R.O.Y. - Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth
- Paid In Full - Eric B. & Rakim
- Microphone Fiend - Eric B & Rakim
- I Got Cha Opin (Remix) - Black Moon
- Respiration - Black Star
- I Used to Love H.E.R. - Common
- C.R.E.A.M. - Wu-Tang Clan
- Daytona 500 - Ghostface Killah
- The Message - Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five
- Children's Story - Slick Rick
- Beats to the Rhyme - Run DMC
- So What Cha Sayin' - EMPD
- Jam 4 U - Redman
- Tonight's Da Night - Redman
- Today Was a Good Day - Ice Cube
- Electric Relaxation - A Tribe Called Quest
- Mama Said Knock You Out - LL Cool J
- Who Am I? (What's My Name) - Snoop Dogg
- Gin and Juice - Dr. Dre
- The Show - Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh
- NY State of Mind - Nas

Without a doubt, the greatest beat of all time is 'Still Dre'.
This for sure but a close second:
I've always liked this one
Way better than the traditional beat in the remix.
This one is great too. Fits the song perfectly.

which is fine for personal taste, but he is ridiculously overrated.
Outkast -So Fresh, So Clean would be my personal choice, the beginning never fails to impress. However trying to select just one is a fairly insurmountable task. It Ain't Hard To Tell by Nas would have to be up there as well though.

Or Power by Kanye, or Dark Fantasy by Kanye, or Jesus Walks by Kanye. Damn Kanye is a good ass producer.

I'd also put forward Shake Your Rump from the Beasties, and NAS' NY state of mind.
Also killer picks of mine. Nice job, gentlemen. Beastie fans, how you feel about Make Some Noise off Hot Sauce Committee Pt. II? Not for best ever, just in terms of Beastie beats.
I got a million answers so here's a random one:
Say what you will about Linkin Park, but Mike Shinoda is fucking crazy on the mic.
edit:...and this
Too many good ones, but I love Electric Relaxation. There is also a lack of anything from Madlib or Exile on that list.
What about Dilla's So Far To Go
@liquidsword: First Pharcyde song I ever heard. Got hooked immediately.
