Symphony of the Night. But then it's the only one I've really played, save for Castlevania 64.
But I don't really remember playing that game and from what I hear from most that's probably for the best.
What is your favorite Castlevania game?
Really, those are your only 2? Do you own a DS or PSP? I believe all of the 3D Castlevanias to be the worst in the series, including the newest abortion. SotN is stereotypically the best, but I am fine with that as it still holds up and is still amazing. I wish we could get a cool HD remix for that game.
Oh and the 360 Arcade game released this past summer of arcade is pretty bad as well as its basically all of the DS Castlevania games + SotN mashed into a pile of poop.
I've beaten every Castlevania to come state side. It's was just one of those things since I was a kid. Oh, there's a new castlevania? I'll see you guys monday... For some reason Lament of Innocence just really hit the sweet spot for me. Symphony of the Night was a great game, but I just dig being a Belmont more than Alucard and Leon has it going on. Alas, Simon's Quest still holds a lot of love in my heart as well, even though it's totally broken... Castlevania II...I still love you.
Castlevania 3 Definetly. It's like the first one but not stupid hard until the very last levels (still pretty hard), and it's got multiple characters and paths that you can take through the game. Only thing that could've made it significantly better would be if it had a separate button for sub-weapons. Trying to hit an enemy with a sub-weapon while standing next to stairs is never not frustrating.
Some of the series best music was introduced in this one as well.
I haven't played much of SotN yet, but it seems awesome. My favorite so far is Super Castlevania IV.
I'm probably going to be the only person that played SotN but still put down Ecclesia, Shanoa was a cool sexy witch with pathos. Alucard was a brat with daddy issues that just swung around two Crissaegrim to commit patricide in like three seconds (seriously, that sword is so imba).
Only Castvania games I was able to get into was the 2nd one on NES. I actually just picked up Lord of Shadows yesterday and so far I am really liking it. I can't wait to get home from work so I can jump back in to it. I really don't understand the hate it has been getting I think it is really good, loving the combat and they way the game looks.
Symphony of the Night, no contest. Loved pretty much all of them, of course, although I am partial to the SotN and later ones with that exploration style, especially Aria and Dawn of Sorrow.
I maintain that Dracula X Chronicles shouldn't be on the list, since it isn't an original game, just a compilation of other titles.
Also, pretty sure option F. (Symphony of Dissonance) is not a game. OP probably meant Harmony of Dissonance.
I would have voted for Symphony, but then I remembered how awesome Order of Ecclesia was. Christ, I need to play some more of that.
Had to choose Aria of Sorrow. This is a franchies I have a huge weakspot for (provided it's not in 3D or that XBLA abomination). Was a tough call between that and Super Castlevania IV.
For some reason I have no recollection of my play through of Symphonay of the Night. I'm going to have to replay that one of these days. I played the GBA Castlevania games over and over along with the Metroid games. Metroidvania games played so well on that on that system.
I Guess Symphony of the Night was pretty amazing when it was new. But now, IMO, it can't compare to Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia and the other Castlevania's on DS. The level system in SoTN is not very balanced. The game starts very hard, and in the end it's too easy... It's far too easy to gain levels. Also, I recall that I found the Final Knights or whatever they are called (In the upside-down clockwork corridor) HARDER than Dracula.

Whoops... You are completely right :P
Super Castlevania IV. It looked great, had one of the best soundtracks of the series, and had the creepy horror movie atmosphere that the series seems to have lost. I rather like the linear games more than the Metroid-style games in the series, anyway.
Symphony of the Night is a great game, but the sense of atmosphere is lost on me with the sometimes weirdly jazzy music and awful voice acting.
But really, SCIV wins because you can whip in all 8 directions.
The DS games blow SOTN out of the water... It was incredible at the time and still holds up pretty well, but its popularly held title of 'greatest Castlevania game evar' is a little unjustified at this point IMHO. Oh, and Castlevania X Chronicles rules.
Symphony of the Night is the greatest game of all time. Game, not Castlevania game. I love Harmony, Aria, and Dawn but SotN has better music, a better story, a better castle layout, better weapons, the crissaegrim...did I mention the music? I can even overlook the huge flaw of having to equip a healing item and then throw it on the ground in front of you to use it. I can absolutely see why people would choose any of the other Metroidvania style games, but for me personally, this is the best of the group.
Aria of Sorrow is better than SOTN.
Yeah, I said it. SOTN is an amazing game, but the complete lack of any challenge whatsoever kills it for me. I ADORE Aria's soul system as it really lets you make your character play to your strengths.
Dawn was crap though. Terrible art, mediocre music, lousy castle design and a horrible touch screen gimmick for bosses made this direct sequel vastly inferior.
Favourite non-metroidvania would have to be Castlevania IV (I refuse to use that stupid 'Super' prefix). I only just started playing it for the first time and it just drips with atmosphere. The music is jaw-droppingly good. In fact, I would argue that its even better than the SOTN soundtrack.
Super Castlevania 4 by far for me. The best music, the best traditional gameplay, best graphical style, one of the best intros in any game, best level design, great difficulty. There is nothing bad about this game. Ifeel almost the same for SotN, but the lack of the Vampire Killer made me think of it more like a side story.
plus i love the music more in 4.
